I checked the Fire Gathering site and there's only one gathering in my state (MO) and it's three hours away. I even checked for KS, since I'm in KC, but nothing. Is Blizzard hoping that people will start hosting more FSGs because of this skin?
Hearthstone community: Why should we go to Fireside Gatherings? There's no special reward, these events are stupid!
Blizzard: Here's a totally cosmetic special reward.
Hearthstone community: HOW DARE YOU OFFER US A SPECIAL REWARD?!
You're looking at it wrong. Nobody's annoyed because there's now a reward for going to Fireside Gatherings, when there wasn't one before. They're annoyed because they want the reward, but still don't want to go to Fireside Gatherings, because gating content behind real life events for an entirely digital game is the stupidest idea I've ever heard of.
I didn't realize that exclusive skins qualified as "gating content" now. I'll be upset when they release exclusive uncraftable cards and tie them to a real-world event. Every company that implements cosmetic rewards in their games eventually uses them in exclusive ways. That's just... how videogames work.
I wasn't actually talking about the skin there, I should have been clearer, I totally see how my wording made it seem like that. I was talking about the Fireside Tavern Brawls which the majority of players will never experience, but seem like really cool content that I would love to be involved in. Further incentivising it with a reward doesn't make the idea of an entire mode of an online game being stuck behind real world barriers any less stupid.
Also, "That's just... how videogames work." is a shit excuse for anything, I'm sorry. That's how a large amount of videogames work now, with the terrible pre-order culture and piecemeal dripfeed of DLC which could've just been included in the main game or implemented as a free update, but just because that's the case doesn't mean it should be or needs to be.
Cosmetic reward exclusivity is acceptable, I totally get that, but there's a difference between 'Reach Legend' or 'Be good enough to participate in a Tournament' exclusivity, 'Blizzcon Ticket' or 'Paid Purchase' exclusivity, and 'Things entirely out of your control' exclusivity. I can become better at the game. I can spend money. I can't magic up a community of players near me that want to participate in a Fireside Gathering, so I'm stuck with gatherings 3 hours away by car, with people I don't know and have no way of getting to know beforehand, at best. And I live in one of the largest cities in my country!
If you weren't talking about the skin, why did you reply to my comment which was entirely about the skin, under an article about the skin?
And "that's just... how videogames work" is an answer to the "How could Blizzard be so stupid to do this?" argument. They're not doing anything odd or out of the ordinary. They're just following industry-wide standards, but actually doing it in the least disruptive way possible.
And if there aren't Fireside Gatherings near you, they've given you every single tool you need to plan one of your own. You don't need to "magic up a community" - it only takes three people to earn rewards in a Fireside Gathering. Attending Blizzcon for exclusive content is WAY more difficult than planning a small FSG at the local library.
Hearthstone is a fully online card game. Why are they trying to force in person interaction? You should be able to make one of these with people on your friends list!
You used the wrong verb - no one's "forcing" you to get a purely cosmetic add-on for the game. What they're doing is *incentivizing* in-person interaction. It's a reward for those who go to Fireside Gatherings, not a punishment for those who don't.
agreed - also lets not forget that when a person 'invests' themselves in a game by taking physical actions in support of it, they are becoming more tied to the game, and more likely to do things like buy packs and hero skins and devote more time to it, not to mention recruiting others.
This is how pyramid schemes get started.
Sounds like good old American capitalism to me! Isn't the end of history fun?
I assume you mean the end of the stupid ages before capitalism/Americans liberated human-kind and brought about the greatest period of human social and economic advancement in the history of the universe.
WOW. I must have missed that moment when "Americans liberated" humankind. Was that before or after they attempted genocide and enslaved a whole race of people? As an American myself, your perspective is laughably absurd.
Don't drink the cool-aid they serve at American Colleges. The 3rd world hasn't dramatically reduced its poverty in a vacuum - global poverty has been on such a sharp decline because of America (and a few other developed countries) and Capitalism.
American ideals, identity, culture and values should be celebrated, not shied away from.
If you are so ashamed to be an American maybe you should stop being one.
Aw, it's so cute to find a jingoistic Trump-sucker. Keep reading Ayn Rand, useful idiot.
Its all fun an games till a socialist gets his feelings hurt. Do you need a safe space to cry in?
You're adorable, in a naive 12-year-old who thinks 4chan is "edgy" kind of way.
4chan isn't edgy? Yikes I guess I am getting old.
Wait so people wanted shaman as a Warlock skin?
