Mike Donais Clarifies the Various Copy Mechanics of Hearthstone
In a post on reddit yesterday evening, Mike Donais shed some light on the rough rule the team uses for copying within Hearthstone. It's important to note that they are trying to make this the consistent rule going forward and they will review cards from the past and future with this in mind.
Quote from Mike DonaisThe rough rule for copying is:
If you copy something that is in play and the copy is in play it keeps stats. (Faceless Manipulator)
If you copy something from other zones it is the base card. (Thoughtsteal)
If you copy something in play to another zone it is a base card. (Echo of Medivh)
If you move something from deck or hand then it is still that exact card so it keeps stats. (Death Grip, Deathlord.)
If something leaves play it loses buffs. (Sap)
We are trying to make this the consistent rule and reviewing existing and future cards with this in mind.
No. I actually stole C'Thun once and it was a 6/6. I believe that is because the card itself is not getting buffed in the same way that Prince Keleseth buffs cards, but that it is being tracked separately so that the number can be displayed publicly to both players while being used for cards like Twin Emperor Veklor. That said, if you stole a C'Thun while YOU had C'Thun buffs...not sure what that would do.
As an aside, there's been a bug for a few patches now where when you draw C'Thun the game lags for a moment. I think that's because the game is adding the aura buffs to C'Thun as you draw it, which would explain why it's just a 6/6 when it's in the deck.
do you get the +1/+1 from prince/shaman legendary?
I think they said that C'Thun buffs are tied to your hero (like hero aura). Think of it like this: if you have a Raid Leader in play and you get a card via Deathlord the minion which was pulled from your deck will be buffed by +1 attack.
@Bloodshot0 yes you will. His effect is identical to Prince Keleseth.
Not really, its pretty interesting when you think about it. Ritual buffs (i.e Prince Keleseth or Mistcaller) the buffs are kinda like on a "tally", and both players run that tally, so if your oponent has played ritual cards, buffing their in-deck Wisp to a 3/3, as an example, and you stole it through effects like Death Grip, it is now under your tally, so it goes back to 1/1. If it is on board, then it's another story, because once a minion enters play, it will keep all buffs applied to it, except for effects like Stormwind Champion or Crystal Core(wich lots of people didn't understand back in launch, and were confused as to why their stolen minion didn't remain a 5/5), the game will keep doing a check when such cards are into play, and minions will keep or lose buffs depending on where in the board they are.
Good news for all the pirate warriors out who didn't know how the copy mechanics worked.
Only important copy mechanic pirate warrior players need to know is the copy decklist one ;P
Why not have info like this available all the time @ the official site? Even better, in game, it's a digital game after all. You can cut the credits button, let's face it, if someone ever clicked that it was by mistake.
I like to watch the credits to see the changes, actually. You're just being mean
lol wut there's a credits button ingame?
I woke up this morning and there was something really weighing on my mind, but I couldn't figure out what. So during my morning bowel movement, I decided to take a few serene minutes to reflect on my overall personal life and conclude what is bothering me - It just had to be that Team5 never established official rules to designing a hearthstone card with the ability 'copy'. No idea how I've gotten through the last 3+ years of my life without knowing this tidbit of information. Then suddenly, out of the blue today my biggest crisis in life is solved. I now know that during the design process of the next expansion, I know what Team5 knows regarding the rules to a card with the copy ability, Not sure what's next in life for me now that I have this piece of information.
Copy expansion inc! CONFIRMED!
woah thanks for this post it only took years to tell us all wat we all,,already know.
Playing since release and i never doubt copying mechanic... What this post was issued for?
So Silverware Golem bug gets fixed?
How the fuck did I not realize this had golem in its name!?
I considered writing the logic for this mechanic in code but only got this far:
<pre class="codeStyle">public void copyMechanic(Card copyCard, Card copiedCard){ if(copyCard == inPlay && copiedCard inPlay){ copiedCard.updateStats(copyCard); } else(){ copiedCard.executeVoodooMagic(); } }</pre>Never had a problem with various Copy mechanics in Hearthstone...
Then we are probably playing a different game.
Finally I am reading "rules" from an official source. XD
What a time to be alive
