Card Pack Changes Coming - No More Duplicate Legendaries
There are a few changes coming in the future, that are not yet live, to how we obtain cards in packs.
These changes will go live with the next expansion.
- No more duplicate Legendary cards. Once you've crafted or obtained a certain card (gold or normal), it isn't possible to obtain again until you've earned all the legendaries from a set.
- You will get a guaranteed Legendary within the first 10 card packs of a new set.
- It will not longer be possible to open more than 2 of a Common, Rare, or Epic card out of a single card pack. You can still obtain dupes in other packs of course.
Ben Brode states in the video that the team is "super excited" about the changes in "the context of our next expansion". It sounds like we may be getting some pretty awesome Legendaries and we won't have a repeat of what happened with Un'Goro.
- If we get another 50 card pack pre-order, that means you'll be certain to get 2 Legendary cards.
- You can buy bundles during the sale, and if you delay opening the packs until the new expansion arrives, they'll benefit from the new system. (Source)
Additionally, a special promotion is going to be run starting soon which will increase the number of packs you will receive when purchasing Un'Goro Packs.
Original Pack Bundles | Special Pack Bundles |
---|---|
7 packs | +2 packs = 9 packs total |
15 packs | +5 packs = 20 packs total |
40 packs | +12 packs = 52 packs total |
60 packs* | +18 packs = 78 packs total |

Quote from BlizzardWAAAH, Legendary!
Starting with the release of Hearthstone’s next expansion (but applying to ALL Hearthstone card packs), every time you open a Legendary in a card pack, it will be a Legendary card from the same set that you don’t already own. Once you own either the golden or non-golden version of a Legendary card, you won’t get a duplicate of it until you own all the Legendary cards from that set. Soon, you’ll be able to craft a Legendary without the worry of opening it in your next few packs!
In addition, you will never open more copies of any card in a pack than you can use in a single deck—no more opening three or more of the same common, rare, or epic card in one pack!
Even More Legendary!
Beginning with the release of the next expansion, you’re also guaranteed to get a Legendary within your first 10 packs of a new set. The release of a new Hearthstone expansion is a super exciting time, and with this change we hope your pack openings start off on a celebratory note!
Combined, these changes should make the pack opening experience more exciting than ever—especially when you see that flash of gold heralding a Legendary card!
The Greater Crater Promotion
Elise Starseeker and her junior explorers have stumbled upon a fascinating discovery: a crater full of card packs! Starting in the next few days, we’re having a special limited time promotion for Journey to Un’Goro card pack bundles: the price stays the same, but the number of packs gets dino-sized!

"Starting with the release of Hearthstone’s next expansion (but applying to ALL Hearthstone card packs), every time you open a Legendary in a card pack, it will be a Legendary card from the same set that you don’t already own."
If you want to guarantee no dupe legendaries, hold on yeah. Doesn't seem a big enough deal to me but each to their own.
"each to their own" - I've got the legendaries I want from it so it doesn't bother me as much, sure it does for others.
That's right. Hold onto your packs.
Alright so this is how Blizz wants to stop the pricing in Hearthstone? Cool for those who care but I stopped playing with Un'Goro and I won't really play again since Blizzard literally crashed my trust in those 2-3 years hearthstone was there. I wish the best to everyone still playing this game tough but for me an era is finised FeelsBadMan
Dude, if you are done already for 2 months, what are you doing on this site?
Overwatch updating lootboxes, Hearthstone updating cardpacks. Smart moves, Blizzard.
This has to be one of the best updates ever done!
I'm reaaaaally happy, even though it took them 3 fucking years to do it...
I think you should edit to specify this starts with the next expansion
hopefully, no one thought it is launched and opening packs with sadness
It already states :
There are a few changes coming in the future, that are not yet live, to how we obtain cards in packs.
I will add an extra bit to clarify it wont start til the expac, but seriously, if people can't read the first line they deserve to be sad ;p
But...but... Sad illiterate HearthPwner will be sad
Thanks! I just don't want people to blame you for not quoting but you have been doing a good job!
I love this update and just want to remind others these changes are not yet live ;)
So. let's say I have all the legendaries, then what?
I know, I know, we get a duplicate one and then we can disenchant it.
But what if it's something hidden in that system. Mmm?!
Let's say I open the classic pack, (but I got all the legendaries) and I open a legendary - I get a new! legendary from the standard rotation card pool! Would be nice.
Just put the Bong down.
What's not clear is:
Are golden legendaries considered duplicates or unique? If it removes the possibility of getting a duplicate legendary (in gold) from a pack then gold legendaries will become significantly more attractive to craft.
I mean, it's clear if you actually read the article.
". Once you own either the golden or non-golden version of a Legendary card, you won’t get a duplicate of it until you own all the Legendary cards from that set."
