Matt Place on Gadgetzan, Kazakus, Priest, Opponent Interaction, Heroic Brawl
Legend Of The Innkeeper had a chance to chat with Senior Game Designer, Matt Place, about Mean Streets of Gadgetzan. We've recapped the podcast interview below. You can listen and find a full transcript on the LOTI website.
Quote from Matt Place
- Initially the set was going to be cops and robbers themed, but it ended up evolving into just the robbers.
- There are 3 crime families because you can divide it evenly among the 9 classes.
- They don't have any plans to announce more tri-class cards, but aren't against the idea.
- Matt's favourite card in the set is Kazakus.
- Kazakus was conceived when a designer asked the question "what if players could make their own card".
- Peter Whalen was responsible for exploring and figuring out ways Kazakus could be implemented.
- It's possible Kazakus-like cards could appear in the future, they just need to make sense.
- Going into the set they had a focus on giving Priest potent cards, but cards that all had different options.
- Secrets are a great way of interacting with your opponent on their turn and maybe cards in your hand that watch for certain things could be as well. They're talking about different ideas.
- Matt believes Heroic Tavern Brawl to be a great success.
- They don't know what they're going to do with Heroic Brawl right yet, but they'll figure it out.
- Patches the Pirate has tried to show up in a few sets post Grand Tournament but finally felt right for Mean Streets.
Like "on hand secrets"
Imagine a mage minion that says "Battlecry: If your opponent played a spell last turn, cast that spell yourself"
Or a warrior card "Challenging troll: 2/5, 5 mana taunt reads: 'If your opponent plays a taunt minion, summon this from your hand'"
Stuff like that I suppose.
"Matt believes Heroic Tavern Brawl to be a great success." WOW SUCH SUCCESS MUCH $$$ ...
Everybody knows that Place is the face!
"Right? Right? Right?"
People. Can we please come together and finally squash this "right?" verbal tick meme? I'm hearing it on more and more podcasts, and it has insidiously burrowed into the ear of nearly every talking head on television and in the media. Stop the madness!
Join me in my quest! We must draw attention to this monstrosity at every turn, shaming it into submission, lest we find ourselves incessantly asking everybody within earshot after every single statement we make. Right?
The expansion is fantastic (Minus how OP Pirates are ATM.)
I was hoping we would've gotten more Pirate cards, but these are fine I guess. I just hope eventually we get a Pirate themed adventure.
Also, I hope they do add more Tri-Class cards. Having neutrals that can only be used by three classes can change a lot of things.
they should add decent mid range and lategame pirates, just like dragons. They seems to be focused on adding more and more aggro pirates for no reason other than spread cancer in their game D=
I agree with most of it. But secrets are NOT a great way to interact with your opponent on their turn. Secrets are a terrible mechanic, especially because only three classes have access to them and there is almost no way to interact with them. It's not fun, it has the potential to be broken, and it's not very effective most of the time.
I also despise secrets. I would probably still hate them if all classes had them, but at least then it would be fair. But I suppose they will never be removed from the game. At least they've added some tech cards to counter secrets, even though you can't fit them into a deck and expect to win more than half of your games.
The issue with Secrets IMO is the playstyle they force not on the opposing player, but on the player who actually played the secret. In general, as a person who has tried almost every version of Secret Mage under the sun, I find Secrets to be utterly awful in slower decks that go for value. The longer it takes your deck to kill the opponent, the longer the opponent has to poke and prod to figure out what kind of Secret you played, and then counter it. The end result is your opponent made a little detour in their plan, maybe played one turn a little more cautiously than he would have, and then he triggered the Secret in a way that gave you the least value. If instead your deck is ultra aggressive and plays for tempo, your opponent just cannot afford to play around the secret, they just have to play into it and pray it's not the one they are afraid of.
The result are these hyper-tempo decks like Secret Hunter and Secret Paladin (and from my experience also a hyper-aggressive Secret Mage with Crystal Runners, Lackeys, Mana Wyrms, Valet's etc.) that just go all in on their secret dump and if you manage to stabilise or counter them, they are out of fuel about 3 turns after they made their tempo play and then just fizzle out. Basically secrets only fit into a single playstle and don't offer you many options in what goals your deck has. That is, with the exception of Freeze Mage (who only plays two very specific secrets) and Midrange Hunter (who can only afford to go long only because of Eaglehorn Bow's additional damage output per secret). Any other non-tempo deck just cannot afford to play secrets because of how they work.
Because of Ship's Cannon reasons
For heroic brawl. Let it die, or implement it into arena or something like arena. Where if you get 12 (or more, if it's a new game mode) wins, you get a special "Legendary Pack" where the chances of getting a legendary are increased by 50% and chances of a golden legendary by 5% so that way, it's both easy and not so easy to get legendary cards for new players!
Patches the Pirate has such a great entrance being shot from your deck via cannon. Well Done.
Patches for President 2016!!
