A Friendly Game of Chess is This Week's Tavern Brawl
Challenge an opponent to a game of chess! Most of your pieces will automatically attack the minion (or minions) in front of them!
Blizzard has answered the calls of the community after we asked for a brawl featuring the Chess boss in the One Night in Karazhan adventure. The brawl works exactly like the adventure boss with the difference that we now get to play against another player instead of AI.
Trivia
- This is the first time we are seeing this brawl.
- The brawl comes to us from the One Night in Karazhan Chess Boss.
- You do not gain credit for class wins in this brawl.
The Brawl
- You will either get to play as The Black King or The White King. The heroes are the same.
- Only 10 health sits on your hero, so make sure you keep up a good defense!
- You don't get to attack with the majority of your minions, they automatically attack at the end of your turn.
- Positioning is key. You'll get the best value if your minions are between his as they will hit two targets instead of one.
- If you rearrange minions by using the Castle ability. Very helpful to re-position that healer.

"Chess"
Hahaha, when something without rng comes up, you guys cannot keep up, but if it is pure rng, you also cry. Even if not like actual chess, I'm a chess player and having 100% win rate with either white or black, the key is planning ahead and like the post said, positioning. Best. BRAWL. EVER. Not rng for this week. 10/10.
There's a little RNG in how you draw, but yeah, I'm loving this one. First game was a win, as black, by holding my Queen until both players were in fatigue. Everyone seems to be dumping their hand and getting confused when they get wiped.
Maybe my comment was a little incisive, and Blizzard does mess a lot with this game that has a lot of potential. But lately it seems like a trend to be salty on everything HS does.
I agree, it's a constant whine on rng. Go play a fucking deterministic game if a little randomness affects you so much.
So many face players salty because they can't go face. I already love this brawl.
Hey I can still go face. Just position your minions right. and then it's Face Never Trade time.
Positioning is crucial in this brawl, just keep an odd difference between your minions and your opponent's. Rotate your minions in order to keep that difference.
I really liked the chess game in Karazhan and I think it's a fun Brawl, if you just want to play a couple games.
However, the rules are too simple to be fair. I'm pretty sure there's an easy way to make a perfect move at any given time and someone will post a guide on reddit within a day everyone will follow from then on.
Worse. Brawl. Ever.
And it is nothing like actual chess.
The Brawl is great. You just need to learn proper minion placement.
This brawl is just ughhhgh...
If you start as White.. well there is not much Black can do to beat you.
That's interesting since I've only played black so far and am 3-0
Didn't say all players play smart or did I? Ofc it's not impossible, but in equal terms, you do have a disadvantage.
White will have an advantage in this mode no matter if people like it or not, it's just simple math. I'm not trying to be rude or anything.
I'll give you a hint. Beyond placing cards correct, there is 2 things that the Black Knight will suffer first. So in a turn per turn placement,(unless you don't understand placement) the White Knight will have this handicap.
Going second with 2 cards, doesn't give you and advantage past turn 3.
Rather put a Purify in my deck than to replay this brawl
Hated this in the adventure and still hated it in Tavenr Brawl. got my pack after 2 tries and dipped. 50% winrate deck you win or you lose. lol
Positioning and planning! I'm at a 75% winrate currently, a lot of players don't plan their turns out, overcommit, and paint themselves into corners.
