What One Night in Karazhan Could Have Been
ShackNews' Steve Watts sat down with Peter Whalen and Ben Thompson to talk about the design process of Karazhan and all the ideas that didn't make the cut for the One Night in Karazhan adventure. We've recapped the interview below.
Quote from Peter Whalen and Ben ThompsonThe Great Race
- The mages of Azeroth would compete to get to the top of the tower.
- Players would also be racing alongside, with some kind of ranking system.
Medivh the Thief
- Medivh steals all the player's belongings and makes fun of you.
- It didn't make sense in the grand scheme of things.
A Goblin Raider
- Set in the Burning Crusade era of World of Warcraft, so no Medivh.
- A goblin wanted to steal loot from the tower.
- Ultimately, they wanted Medivh there since it was his tower.
Medivh the Chicken
- Medivh polymorphs himself into a chicken. That would have been weird.
- They considered turning Moroes into a chicken.
- They were worried the chicken gag would get tired over the release period.
The Real Adventure
- Ultimately, they wanted Medivh to be powerful while keeping things silly and crazy.
- They asked themselves what kind of mage Medivh was in his early years. He wants to party!
- They considered Barnes and Curator following you around later wings instead of Moroes, but it was shut down early on.
Art - Card Backs
- The seasonal card back became an invitation because that's exactly what the month was - the start of the party.
- The blue portal card back was the heroic card back because the portal gets closed at the top of the tower / end of adventure.
- The disco / pre-purchase card back was done because the whole thing is a party.
Art - Misc
- They always start doing art for stuff that won't change - card backs, adventure-specific pieces, game board, key art.
- Cards don't have much of the party thematically because cards need to live beyond the adventure.
- Knights on Horses from The Grand Tournament work well in the fantasy world.. not very true with 70s disco.
- The card design of Barnes was perfect for the art team as he is essentially summoning 1/1 actors. This lead to the spotlight.
And More!
- The Storming Stormwind brawl mechanic evolved out of the Karazhan Mage Race idea.
- The Medivas were going to be a bigger part of the adventure but it was too distracting so they ended up getting the Party Portals brawl.
Concept art is nice but I want to see the cards they were toying with. I have a strong suspicion they have a great Priest card but held it back for the next expansion, deciding this one was "good enough" for $20 and there was no point putting better cards in.
Ahh Tyrande Whisperwind.. the forgotten hero
"They were worried the chicken gag would get tired over the release period."
So INSTEAD they turned him into John Travolta circa 1976.
Yeah...that didn't get tired over the release period, either.
Because he was present only during the first and last boss fights...
If you're going to bitch and moan, find something tangible to stick to. :/
Nah they actually turned him into the idealised form of what Ben Brode thinks/wishes he is/was.
Go look at young Medivh and Brode side by side, you wont be able to unsee it.
So they didn't want make most party related cards to feel like "party cards" because it wouldn't fit to overall theme outside of it? That's silly.
Atleast no Yogg 2.0…
Hearthstone is a great game keep up the great work Blizzard.
Dude, calm down. RNG screws over everyone. It is statistically possible, however unlikely, that you could have won those first few rounds off of good deck drafting/really lucky RNG and then you got really bad drafting and RNG. If you've actually won all of those 10,000 arena games, then this isn't the first time this has happened.
Wow so many down votes i guess that means Hearthstone team has some work to do!
So, lemme get this straight. Over that stretch that you just described, you went 67-29. In other words, you won 70% of your games. How exactly is this such a travesty if you truly are a 73% winning player? If you want to bring statistics into this, that's a p-value of 0.27. That p-value would get you laughed out of the room if you tried to back up an argument with that data (and that's before we even consider the issues with your self-selected, retroactive sample).
Or how about this: you went 49-11 in that first stretch. That's a winning percentage of 82%. But I'm sure the fact that you were 9 points over your "real" winning percentage was just because you were playing your A-game that day, and you were totally more skilled than your opponent and totally outplayed him/her in every single one of those wins.
This whole adventure was a chicken.

The adventure itself was a disappointment it didn't feel like a party was going on after the first wing.. if not for moroes..
Not adding the Medivas was a mistake.. it is mentioned in many parts of the adventure.. it's not explained at all what a "mediva" is BTW.. (I know they are the dancers but only understood it from the brawl) too distracting.. distracting from what?
The adventure lacked flavour in the boss battles the bosses used 95% normal cards.. in naxxramas there were like 20 boss cards....
Heroic was a joke.. except the last one, which was challenging.
Well the adventure as a whole wasn't a total disappointment, the cards are quite good and some bosses were fun.
But shittalking blizzard is cool atm, so whatever..
man , do you remember those Naxx heroic fights ? those were the times ....
So basically their idea moved from crap to...crap. Nice design of cards blizz SeemsGood I already asked myself when these cards will come out that will buff all the existing tempo decks (and Yogg decks)
Priest? What's a "Priest"? Can I order and eat that in McDonalds?
so when are we going to unlock Tyrande?
