Update 4:24 PM EDT: Official patch notes are listed below. No mention yet of a free packs event.

Hearthstone Patch 5.2.2 - Free Packs Event?

A new patch has been pushed the the live servers. Within it, an activate flag was updated under an event!

set_rotation_2016_free_packs is no longer set to None but rather "set_rotation_2016_free_packs"

We aren't certain what this means but we'll update if we find out!

Probably not, but it could be free GVG packs to encourage players to play wild, since it's a bit dreary there at the moment.

Right, they don't sell packs anymore which is why I thought they might give those out. They wouldn't be losing money (outside of dusting/crafting standard cards) so it's a move that could make sense. I agree though, I don't think I'm right, just thought I would throw it out there for conversation.

it's nice that blizzard does these promotions like receiving free packs for new expansions, just like WOTOGs (13 free packs). Hope it happens again

IIRC, that was the first time they gave away actual free packs, and not a promo for buying (or "buying") something like a Samsgung Galaxy S4+, or signing up for the Crunchy Roll trial.

could it be that the change set_rotation_2016_free_packs = set_rotation_2016_free_packs is just changing it so it reads the value from a server config file instead. So they have ability to re-use this toggle without patching in the future? They can change the value on the server side at a moments notice maybe to add free packs on rotation of any new sets being introduced. Maybe?

Sets that will rotate out next spring: BRM, TGT and LOE. Only basic, classic and this year's stuff will remain in Standard when the first expansion of 2017 is released. Unless they change the rotation system, that is.

GvG was a December release too, it only lived for a year and a few months before being rotated out. Of course nobody even knew about Standard until recently.
