Yong Woo Dev Interview - Donuts
Hearthstone's Senior Producer, Yong Woo, was invited onto the Velen's Chosen podcast today. We didn't really learn anything groundbreaking, but it was nice to have some things confirmed. You can check out our recap below and if you'd like to watch the whole thing, you can do that too!
You can also check out the podcast (and previous episodes) at VelensChosen.com
Quote from Yong WooDonuts
- The Hearthstone team has a Donut rule. If you mention donuts over at the office, you're bringing in at least 2 dozen donuts.
- There is a calendar to keep track of who is bringing in donuts when based off this rule. Many donuts are on queue.
General
- There are more players playing standard than wild.
- They're quite satisfied with how the crafting system has been working.
- They've been experimenting internally with ways to teach new players game concepts that can be difficult to understand.
- Just because a card only has a 40% winrate doesn't mean there isn't anything wrong with it - they try to also design around emotion. The game has to feel good.
Arena
- The second pack that players could receive in arena at the high end feels great, and that's why you can now get a second pack earlier on.
- The guaranteed pack from Arena runs is from the latest expansion because players want the newest stuff.
Art
- Yong had reservations at first about Mimiron's Head's effect animation due to the amount of time it would take to create it, but it paid off in the end when the community talked about how awesome it was.
- The extra art associated with Fandral Staghelm was a bit out there, but it too paid off.
- "Who would make a bear tiger? Really, you spent the time to make a bear tiger?"

I went ahead and added a link to your site in the post too. Great episode guys :D
Thank you Flux. I know you guys are in a rush to produce up-to-date content, but didn't want to get short-changed for creating content for nearly a year :)
At my office, we also have a similar rule... Over coffee, though.
Fandral Staghelm effects are a great addition to the game. It is a great card and it makes you excited to see what is going to come out from shapeshifting cards - the first times, at least.
You should invest in more cards like those for Druid. It will keep playing Fandral exciting.
