Old Gods Expansion Could Have Included Titans
The Golden Wisp podcast had Peter Whalen, Hearthstone Game Designer, on to discuss the design of the Old Gods expansion. There were a few interesting bits of information he had to share about the design around the expansion and card nerfs.
Hopefully Titans will one day be a thing in Hearthstone!
Quote from Peter Whalen
- The team wanted to do an expansion featuring Old Gods vs The Titans but couldn't find room to flesh both out within 130 cards.
- C'Thun and his buffing minions had used a keyword called Ritual / Ritualists.
- They don't want to add too many new mechanics to the game - it can make it more difficult for new players to understand the game.
Card Nerfs
- Ice Block, Alexstrasza, and Sylvanas Windrunner were all nerf candidates.
- Keeper of the Grove was going to be increased to 5 mana, but they instead made it a 2/2.
- Blade Flurry was considered to be changed to a single target ability.
- Ancient of Lore was a tough nerf, but they want Druid to feel different every year.
Deck Spotlight: C'Thun N'Zoth Control Priest
Poor Anduin hasn't seen much play on the pro-scene, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun with him! Shock191919 brings us a Rank 5 Priest Control deck tonight which makes use of the Old Gods C'Thun and N'Zoth, with N'Zoth being more of a back-up plan.
- Build up your C'Thun, get some cool stuff from Museum Curator.
- Soak up damage you've taken via Twilight Darkmenders or protect via Twin Emperor Vek'lor.
- If they aren't dead, build your board again via N'Zoth, the Corruptor.
The deck costs 5520 dust, and you can find the contents of it below. Check out the writeup to learn more about the deck.

It may be boring and unineteractive for you,for me it's one of the few Decks that requires you to think before doing something... It's not just play on curve or hide behind 70 armor and wait for the game to go to fatigue.... You need to plan a few turns ahead,it's not just play Alex and throw your whole hand at your opponent's face... I find Freeze mirror to be funniest Mu in the game and I'm glad they decided not to destroy the Deck...
Freeze mage still isn't a top tier deck and can be very easily rushed down with aggro decks without mad scientist and heal not.
"it can make it more difficult for new players to understand the game"
Am I the only one who is so fucking tired of them focusing on new players and how they are supposedly too retarded to understand basic mechanics? We've all been there. We all had to figure out how the game works. And lets be honest, you're not even going to have any WoG packs before you have figured out how all the essential mechanics work in this game (which takes you like 20 - 50 games i guess?).
Look at how they implemented the extra deck slots for example: It's obvious that they put a lot of time in designing a way for new players to unlock new deck slots so it wouldn't be 'too confusing', and the only change existing players got was 'a longer scroll bar'. Even though the experience of unlocking those deck slots takes about a week, and the experience of that 'longer scroll bar' lasts for years. So why not put all that effort in a better way to display your 18 decks than just a fucking scroll bar...?
I love the game tho Blizz wp gg bye
I'm not saying they should just keep adding complex stuff until Hearthstone is some kind of Dungeons and Dragons with a shit ton of rules...
But according to many long time WoW players, focusing on simplicity and new players instead of the die hard player base is exactly how they fucked up WoW. They just kept dumbing things down and made the game so much easier. Of course that will earn them a lot of new players, but what's the point of getting new players if they don't stick around?
I don't want that same thing to happen to Hearthstone. And in order to do that, I don't think it's a smart move to keep adding features that are exciting in your first 2 weeks of play, but that are non existing / boring / dumb for the people who have been playing the game for months / years.
Titans in the next expansion (adventure?) are more than confirmed here :)
Waiting for next adventure ... :)
I think we´ll see the Titans in an Ulduar adventure :) Fine by me!
Keeper of the Grove and Blade Flurry are not just nerf their ruined.
They do not know how to fix the card, they simply deform.
So, depending on how many Titan cards they had in mind, we might see either an Adventure or Expansion? But don't think that Blizzard would give away the theme for their next release that easily...
okay... so we prepare for the next expansion or the next adventure ? :)
Wait, wait, wait.
They actually considered straight up removing the only rogue board clear ?
I mean, they sort of did, but, hopefully, unintentionally.
The Titans next expansion is real !
