We don't know if this means they'll be accessible at a later date through some kind of Adventures menu, but it is odd!

Ben Brode on Basic Cards Power Creep
Update 8:30 PM EST: The video is now private.
Via /u/WorldAtWarFix on reddit
An unlisted video on the HearthstoneRU YouTube channel is making the rounds on the interwebs this evening where he discusses power creep on basic cards. You can find a recap of the video below, or watch the video here.
Quote from Ben Brode
- Power creep over basic cards isn't a big deal. They want basic cards to be bad, upgrading your free cards makes you feel good.
- New players don't just lose games because they're using basic cards which are worse then the better versions of them - they're new players.
- Ice Rager isn't played in the meta, and therefore has no effect on the power level of the game so it's not really power creep.
- Dr. Boom is better than War Golem and is an example of power creep. War Golem was never played though due to it being bad.
Hopefully there will be some Christmas themed music as well.
Want ACHIEVEMENTS!
Magni and Alleria have no special greetings or you couldn't find that yet?
Christ. Everything about this dev team is wrong. These guys know nothing about balance in TCG.
I totally agree. They really are clueless sometimes.
It's Ben they have no idea what they are doing or saying at all
"New players don't just lose games because they're using basic cards which are worse then the better versions of them - they're new players."
That's pretty offensive at one point isn't? He basically saying it's not because the cards suck, it's because you are a noob.
I tried posting this once already but it doesn't seem to have gone up (despite the fact I still got auto-subscribed to the thread afterwards) but I actually disagree that the devs don't know what they're doing. Look at Hearthstone's design and mechanics, it's clearly a well made game and I suspect the truth is the devs know exactly what they're doing but have made certain choices based on wanting the game to make money over enhancing gameplay.
The reason I say this is that if you look at the cards that have been nerfed they all tend to be of low rarity (typically soulbound or common) and are not cards players have to work hard to get (e.g. starving buzzard, warsong commander, blood imp, soulfire) . In particular Warsong Commander actually enabled a very cheap deck which had a win rate which, arguably, was only capped by player skill. Obviously other factors were at play but given a card has just been released which is potentially 10 mana- charge for 30 damage (anyfin can happen) it seems like certain given reasons (about charge not being fun/ interactive etc) aren't actually that important.
A card like Dr. Boom on the other hand is a legendary and (at least in my experience) seems to be one of those absolutely essential must-craft cards recommended for all new players due to its ridiculous power level. More importantly it's so powerful it's made big game hunter (an epic) also near essential for a huge number of decks, adding to the amount of packs / dust needed for building decent decks for constructed. The fact this card has been seen as OP for so much longer than warsong and still hasn't been fixed only really serves to support this. Similarly secret pally requires 2 copies of an epic to work at all and, depending on deck list, often runs other expensive cards such as Tirion (which is also arguably in need of a nerf but to nowhere near the same extent as Boom).
Could be I'm way off and they really are just incredibly out of touch with what so many players want AND with what's actually balanced but Hearthstone is a business after all and to me it makes sense that this may be the real reason behind these decisions.
The new Card Backs are awesome !
AMAZING!!! *_*
I am quite sure that some of the fate cards - those with "Bonus" at the end - are not tied to the Deal your Fate Brawl, but the Battle of the Builds Brawl.
I'm liking that Christmas cardback. Might actually change from my normal fireside cardback for a while.
Let's be real about the real reason for power creep. Power creep occurs because when companies that make card games (like Wizards of the Coast or Blizzard) release new card expansions there have to be cards in those expansions that players want. As games keep adding cards, players get more and more satisfied with their decks. And thus companies have to produce cards that will "beat" the existing cards in various mana slots so that players will want to buy the card expansions. THAT'S the reason for power creep.
Obviously, this can only go only so long though and what we will see in HS is what we saw in WOTC. Limitations on what cards can be played in competitive matches. Blizzard might decide to make basic cards unavailable in Ranked play. Or perhaps Naxx cards, etc. None of us will like that sort of change but when Ben mentioned "radical changes" that is exactly, I wager, what he is referring to about future changes to manage power creep.
This makes total sense. But I also like that with new cards being added, older cards are sometimes made relevant for a little while.
At this point there have not really been much of a power creep. Most cards that have been replaced by better cards were horrible and did not see play in even basic decks. The so called power creep replacement cards like Ice Rager is still worse than any card except for the ones used in basic decks. Every adventure/expansion has given maybe one or two cards that were too strong.
I do not agree with Ben Brode with his definition of power creep, but what I am saying is that the new cards that are strictly better than the best old cards have been few and far in between. The other thing with a digital game is that when they see cards affecting both tournaments and ranked play to much you just change the code in the background and the card is more balanced.
They take their time before coming in with the nerfhammer, but when it reaches that point the fix is not that difficult. The Dr. Boom vs War Golem is however a horrible example of his statement of a card not being played and then replaced by a better one that is not a power creep.
Power creep discussions are useful only when discussing cards that all classes can access (i.e., the neutral minions).
Agree completely. HS is still very young as CCGs go and it's hardly experienced any power creep. But it's definitely coming.
Awww that heart cardback is going to be so ironically BM in every aggro deck ever. (: Just what HS needed.
"Greetings, I'm sorry, Happy valentines!"
