New Mechanics
- New Keyword: Starship - Fly around The Great Dark Beyond in a shiny new Starship! Throughout The Great Dark Beyond, you’ll find Starship Piece minions. When they die, their stats and effects get added to your in-progress Starship construction. When you’re ready, press the button and Launch your Starship directly onto the board for 5 Mana. You can stack as many pieces as you want before you launch—the sky’s the limit!
- New Mechanic: Starship Building. Cards that have an effect when you are building a Starship.
- New Race: Draenei.
- Returning Keyword: Spellburst! A one time only effect when casting a spell. With a Spellburst minion or weapon in play, casting a spell will activate the Spellburst effect.

Other Mechanics
Some mechanics that were seen in previous card sets were brought back on new cards, as well as some truly new mechanics were added:
- Death Knights get one of the Orbital cards which have an extra effect when you play adjacent cards.
- Crewmates are Demon Hunter minions with bonus effect keywords, and when you play one, the adjacent crewmates also get played.
- There's more Choose One cards for Druid.
- Hunters get a package of cards around the Discover mechanic.
- Elemental package returns for Mage, but now with a Fire spell twist.
- Paladins see the return of Librams!
- Priest get a unique effect that forces creativity with damage and healing to get to a specific life total across both heroes.
- The Combo keyword is back in a Rogue package.
- Shaman get an Asteroid damage package that holds a middle ground between Incendius and Mage's Lightshow cards.
- A Demon package is not new for Warlock, but this package revolves around the Demons not starting in your deck.
- Warrior gets a significant Draenei package with synergies between the various minions.
- You can view all the new cards in our The Great Dark Beyond Cards List.

Pack Opening Tip
With how many different packs there are these days, it can get a little confusing in what order you should open your packs. Fortunately Blizzard Dev Celestalon made a tweet with just the info you need.
Quote from Blizzard
- Always open Catch-Up Packs first, since their card count is based on collection size.
- If you want the most total cards (fewest duplicates), open Expansion Packs, then Class Packs, then Standard Packs.
- If you want more latest-expansion cards, at the cost of more duplicates overall, open Standard Packs, then Class Packs, then Expansion Packs.
Arena Changes
The Arena changes actually went live with the Patch this time and this meant the new cards of The Great Dark Beyond have largely been playable for a couple of days already in that game mode.
Quote from BlizzardOn October 29, with Patch 31.0, all ongoing Arena runs will end and a new Arena season will begin. With this season, we return to single-class Arena. The eligible sets that will make up this Arena card pool are:
- Caverns of Time
- Festival of Legends
- The Great Dark Beyond
- Showdown in the Badlands
- Scholomance Academy
- Perils in Paradise
Theorycrafted Decks
We created a special Decks post yesterday, with a lot of new archetypes and a lot of new deck ideas. You can find the links to that Decks post below.
Alternatively, create your own deck with the Deckbuilder, add a good guide on how to pilot the deck and help create the post-launch meta!
That should get you started! Thanks for being with us throughout this exciting The Great Dark Beyond reveal period. Shoutout to everyone who helped in one way or another during this time, the other moderators and staff and the devs and all the users who gave us useful suggestions and feedback, and to everyone who enjoyed and supported our coverage. You rock!

I got the Mage and Druid legendries....the BORING ones.
a special bad game to people playing DK
so, they haven't learned anything and your rogue opponents turn still takes up half of yours because of animation clutter. great game.
I mistakenly thought that a Standard pack would give GDB cards, even if it hadn't been released yet.
Oh well.
why is every launch a disaster?
Reward track reset, quests for launch prepared...
