Last month, I committed to being more transparent with you and to proactively share changes we are making with our community, along with context for why we’re making those changes. With that in mind, I’m here to share some details about what we’re working on, starting with something coming right around the corner.
Allow me to introduce the coolest (hottest?) hero skin we’ve ever made: Ragnaros, the Firelord! Ragnaros is our first-ever Mythic skin, pushing the boundaries even further than our Legendary skins. The team went all-out with Ragnaros: his emotive 3D portrait oozes Hearthstone charm; he pops out of the frame and SMASHES your opponents with Sulfuras for his attack animation; he sprawls over your side of the board; he has explosive victory and death screens; and he’s our first-ever dual class Hero Skin, usable in both Shaman and Warrior!
Ragnaros rises out of his portrait to attack and burns the entire board to ash for his victory animation. DIE, INSECT!
He has a special defeat animation, too, if you manage to take him down.
Ragnaros is really emotive. I can't wait for you to see (and hear) him in his full glory in-game.
Ragnaros is coming in our next major patch, Patch 30.4, bundled with 3 Shaman packs and 3 Warrior packs for $60 (USD) or 6000 Runestones. That’s one of the priciest cosmetic bundles we’ve ever done, so I wanted to talk a little about our product strategy as a whole and what it means for all Hearthstone players.
First, let me say that our main goal for Hearthstone is that it remains a game that is easy to pick up and play. That means removing barriers that would prevent players from joining us all in the Tavern, including cost barriers. The core game is about collecting cards and winning on ladder, and that’s where we’ve continuously made the game more approachable for our players. You’ve seen our work in this area through features like catch-up packs, improved loaner decks, the recently revamped new- and returning-player experience, and so much more, going all the way back to changes like duplicate protection and our ladder revamps. These are the types of improvements that keep it so that players can jump into Hearthstone without spending anything, build up a good collection, and climb up the ladder.
But Hearthstone is a game with all kinds of different players, and we’re also working to make sure every type of player has something that delights them in the Tavern.
What we've learned over time is there are many Hearthstone players who really care about cosmetics. These are players who have shown a lot of excitement for cosmetics with a higher quality bar–like the C’Thun hero skin and our revamped Signature cards. Part of the draw for these players is awesome visuals and effects, and being delighted by the additional work and artistry that goes into making something at that high bar. Though we know not every player falls in that category, we do want to continue serving those players with the most awesome cosmetics we can.
Premier cosmetics like Ragnaros and future Mythic Hero Skins will let us deliver an awesome experience to players who want the ultimate flair–and let me tell you, Ragnaros is awesome. And what’s great about cosmetics is that they’re never mandatory to play and enjoy the game; instead, they help us invest more into the offerings and systems within Hearthstone.
Part of our strategy to keep these types of ultra-premium cosmetics special is that we don’t seek to do too many of them. We do plan to continue to regularly offer options across a range of price points, including free grants and items earned through play. One of my favorite experiences when I’m playing Hearthstone is when I see an older card back or skin on ladder that I haven’t seen in awhile and I get to rediscover how beautiful or funny they are. I love seeing the personality of my opponents in that way and I hope you do, too, whether you want to spend money on cosmetics or not. In this same patch we’ll have a free event that gives a card back, a cosmetic coin, and two different hero skins. This is also the patch where all Wild game boards will be in rotation for the Standard format–and we have plans for a “Favorite Boards” feature to come later down the line, too.
We have a lot of other exciting irons in the fire, too. We’re currently deep into work on the major Arena update we have planned for early next year. And, for our core Standard players, we have some fun updates ahead of us with the build up to our next expansion, including something we’ve never done before!
Finally, I haven’t forgotten that I teased pets in my last post. Those are on-track for next year, so I’ll probably have more to share on that in early 2025.
Nobody force anyone to buy it. It's pure visuals with no Pay 2 Win. I won't buy it. There are other games, like Valorant, which have (I've red about it - I don't play it) skins for 90$, and apparently some time ago they released a skin in LoL ( after ~10 years I had enough & I dropped that game some time ago) for 500$...
Of course a company needs to earn money but the amount of work done for this amount of money is a joke.
I would say it's the best cosmetic in the game & they've put the most work into it. Just look at the level & amount of animations... As first sort of that kind of thing it looks really nice. And it it will work, then they will create more... And sooner or later, these new skins will be better. ... But 60$? I'll pass.
Whole games are developed for similar or less
I wonder which games are developed for 60$, or even less 😂 Just because some company sells a game for 60$, or more, or less, doesn't mean that's the cost of creating that game.
Conclusion: it looks cool, but it's way overpriced. ... And seems like some delusional people who thought, that Microsoft will "save us all" will be redpilled preeetty damn hard...
I think he meant that games ARE SOLD for the same price (60$), not the development cost.
And yes, nobody forces anyone to buy such cosmetics, but come on. They released a new expansion without a board, and now they want people to spend this amount of money to buy it. I won't even start to discuss the balancing of this expansion, or how like 70% of the new cards are unplayable in the state of the game we have now, but asking people to buy things, that were free ALL this time (i started playing with "old gods") is just silly.
Just to add too, the OP's POV is what has brought us to the current state of some of these games as well. All these micro transactions start off being 0.99c mobile games, then slowly progressed in price to $2.99, $4.99, $9.99, $19.99, etc and slow progressed in types of games from the junky mobile games all the way up to full on AAA game titles.
I understand letting the companies do this kind of stuff and suffering when it doesn't work out, but everyone is so desensitized anymore and people will actually pay money for this. And as people keep paying money for this kinda garbage, it's going to keep infesting out games (and somehow get even worse). I guess a lot of folks are alright with that, but man I miss getting a CD game and it being fully tested, complete, and ready to play till I scratched the thing by accident or lost it, not constantly filled with bloat to try and nickle and dime you.
Remember way back when the first paid hero skins released, and everyone complained because those PNGs were $10?
Yes, this is much more than a PNG, but $60 for a video game cosmetic is absurd. I can get a full fat AAA game at full price for that much, or a bundle of great indies which blow this out of the water in a value proposition.
I'm the only one that though it was obvious that Ragnaros was going to be the new "Mega-Portrait" as soon as they said "It's TOO SOON to give more details!" like, why even bother in hidde it if they were going to hive such an obvious clue.
I don't have too strong feelings about the portrait, it does remind me a lot to a Looney Toon tho. It feels kinda too cartoonish for that character, but, I don't hate how it looks.
I don't hate how the Runeterra boards look either, tho I wonder where it is the...other half of my board? What if I like one half more than the other? Do I? I don't know, I never had to asked me that question before. But what about Un'goro's board? People loves the Volcano, well guess what, the Volcano is on one half of the board, and the shell to activate it is on the other half. How are they going to solve that?
And how is even going to interact with Transfer Student ? if you can choose the effect of that card, then...it becomes a good card. The card has very strong effects for a 2-drop because it's supposed to be unreliable.
There was no need to change all of this. All they had to do was model a beach ball and a tiki bar and save ourselves all this uncertainty.
I don't have to, actually. But I like to talk about the thing I'm into for the last 10 years, in the only place in the world I can talk about it, which is a forum about this specifict thing.
And honestly I don't care about you enough to stop. So If I feel like I want to say something, I would say it. Just don't read it dude, it's as easy as keep scrolling if you think the text it's too long. I have autism, I've felt like I don't fit in my whole life, and I'm just learning recently not to care and not have to explain who I am. So if I feel like, "I want to write a wall of text about this," I'm going to do it, and I don't have to justify it. No hard feelings tho. It wasn't my intention to bother anybody.
And I'm sorry if I don't explain myself perfectly. I don't normally speak English and I often confuse or misspell words, but I rather keep writting it myself to don't forget it and keep improvement on it, than just using a translator and don't learn anything.
I fully understand. It was not meant as a personal attack(I can see how my smliey could be intepret as ironic) My bad. I love that you have a passion, but for me personally some of it is just out of context. And, yes I should maybe just keep scrolling, that's immaturity from my part. I also don't normally speak english, so no need to apologies for that. Sorry if my comment made you feel bad, not my intention.
Damn. I've actually seen you a few times and you usually actually have good opinions. I feel like usually people have bad opinions about this game lol. I too love this game and love posting on these forums, but have no one to talk to about it IRL, so I get you completely.
Ridiculous price. Of course a company needs to earn money but the amount of work done for this amount of money is a joke. Whole games are developed for similar or less
We had our new boards die for this abomination of skin. Also, dual-class hero skin is just the cherry on top. Blizzard executives are beyond incompetent at this point. Like please stop abusing the player base. I don't want to be angry every time I see news about this game or when I think about this game.

We lost expansion cinematics and expansion game boards to this.

Imagine spending the same amount of money for an average cosmetic, which could get you games like BG3...
Blizzard lost their mind (long ago....)
Edit: Gameboards in Legends of Runeterra cost ~10$. If you take this for a comparison, we pay 50 for the Hero Animations.
Remember way back when the first paid hero skins released, and everyone complained because those PNGs were $10?

/spit every whale you see on ladder with this.
you are making yourself worse with such a shitty attitude
why are you endorsing consumer abuse?
I'm not. My comment (regarding your attitude) has nothing to do with it. Read carefully
yeah you are actually. instead of attacking me, attack the company who thinks we want to spend 60 dollars for a skin.
"attacking you", LOL

Do you have to write an essay on every single post? Half of it is just random yapping:)

Where is the new game board revealed? Is it half of the existing board being replaced by Mythic Hero Skin that costs $60?
