In wide sweeping changes Blizzard is touching almost every deck archetype there is. Read all the changes for the full picture!
Quote from BlizzardPatch 29.2.2, launching later today, contains big updates to Hearthstone and Battlegrounds.
Hearthstone Updates
Dev Comment: This patch is a little different than our usual balance patches—it’s more about the general design direction of the game than it is about particular power outliers (though we hit a few of those, too). Right now, there are a lot of cards that can remove player agency and raise the power level of the game beyond where we want for a 4-set meta. We’re looking at a variety of these meta-defining cards in this patch, from OTK-style cards to powerful AoE effects that make it feel like your minions don’t matter.
There will always be cool, dreamy cards in Hearthstone—that's part of what makes Hearthstone Hearthstone—but these types of cards can sometimes be disproportionately more fun to play with than play against. We don’t want these kinds of cards to make up the most powerful and prevalent archetypes in the game, especially if they create metagames where player agency feels low.
There are a few categories of changes in this patch. The first is cards that can end the game quickly when played, and which warp the entire game around whether you get to play them at the right time. No Duplicate cards are also a subsection of this. Being able to draw your deck to avoid the downside of these cards is an interesting deck construction challenge, but it has in large part devolved into turbo-draw decks that tend to be less interactive and not in the spirit of these cards.
The second category is powerful, uncapped board clears. We’ve made and will continue to make AoE effects, but these particular instances are too efficient at clearing the board, making minion-based strategies feel helpless.
The third category is cards that are just a little too strong in their decks and should be toned down a bit. Similarly, our Wild changes are to some clear power and play experience outliers in that Mode.
Finally, we’re making some buffs, too! A lot of the changes we’re making in this patch are to weaken new cards or strategies that came from Whizbang’s Workshop, but we don’t want to just go back to the meta we had before the expansion. So we’ve identified some underperforming Whizbang’s Workshop archetypes that we think better align with our overall goals for the format and infusing them with a bit more power to give them another chance.
This probably won’t be a one-and-done fix. We’re going to keep an eye on the game after these changes go live and continue to push towards a game that aligns with our design philosophy. To read more about this general philosophy, check out our Developer Insights post on the topic from earlier this week.

Battlegrounds Updates
Dev Comment: Well met! We're so pleased that players have been enjoying the new Battlegrounds update as well as the new Duos mode! Overall, we are pretty happy with how both game modes are shaping up, but we wanted to help out some underperforming strategies. We went for a very wide approach this patch with a lot of smaller changes to smooth out the meta. We've also hit a few notable outliers, such as Greymane's Champion, Rylak Metalhead, Gem Smuggler, Iridescent Skyblazer, and Orc-estra Conductor, to give other cards more room to shine. We'll continue to monitor the game after these changes and make more adjustments as necessary. We hope you all have fun in the Tavern!

- [Battlegrounds] Fixed a bug where using Suspicious Stimulant on a minion caused errors with Jandice Barov’s Hero Power.
- [Battlegrounds] Fixed a bug where Felboar would consume a minion in the Tavern before the Tavern Spell takes effect.
- [Battlegrounds] Fixed a bug where Magnetized enchantments on a Magnetic minion wouldn't carry over if the minion was tripled.
- [Battlegrounds] Sped up Mirror Monster’s visual effect.
- [Achievements] Fixed a bug where Top Teamwork progressed based on solo games as well.
- [Achievements] Fixed a bug where Floop de Loop progressed even when you weren’t the one playing with Floop.
yeah blizzard will just nerf every deck you suck too much to beat if cry like a little baby for long enough, lucky you
Sorry to disappoint you, I got legend this month in WIld and had a positive winrate against Quest Mage playing Aggro Priest.
FOR ME Quest Mage was not a big problem - but it was a big problem for the meta making a lot of other deck types "useless" and therefor I welcome the fact, that this deck is dead now, because the format will be overall more diverse without this deck.
To be fair, Time Warp was abused in one way or another time and again over the last five years or so, whether it was Vargoth, Mana Giants, Greysage Parrot, Rommath or Galactic Projection Orb now. It's reasonable to assume it would just be a matter of time until yet another effect allows you to abuse it and easily get multiple turns in a row.
By the way, I wouldn't be surprised if this version again finds its way into the meta someday. Right now, it is mainly the high cost of completing the quest that pushed it into hypergreedy Reno decks, but what do you think how many card draw or spell generation effects Mage receives over the course of the next 2 years, and how many other ways there'll be to turn an extra turn into an OTK?
Funny trivia, back when the card was revealed, Kripp said that it would someday be absolutely broken, even long before we had any cards that could repeat spells, and Trump mocked him while giving Lackari Sacrifice 5 stars. Good times.
Sweet, a lot of much needed changes.
Great to see some wild changes which is where I do my climbing.
Hopefully the quests issue will be further addressed soon also.
Great and sensible nerfs and buffs to a lot of standard cards. Let's hope it shakes up the meta.
very cool that mine rogue, one of the easiest combos deck to play in the history of the format, gets a two mana delay meanwhile quest mage, a deck that has been refined for years at this point and is beloved by the community that has dedicated so many hours to playing it, gets completely fucked out of the game. there was plenty of new decks popping up in the current meta, like hooktusk and garrote rogue, reno druid, togwaggle dh, and even paladin. but no, blizzard cant just let wild be wild, they have to police the most fun and unique decks in it that they have arbitrarily decided are too uninteractive despite how many people adore playing them and the format as a whole in its current state.
the balance team should not ever touch the wild format again, they have made it beyond clear that they have no idea what they're doing balancing it.
"most fun and unique decks"
Clearly you're the outlier here. Even most quest mage enjoyers admit that its a toxic deck that should have been nerfed ages ago. It turns hearthstone into a single player game, that should not be possible.
says the genius named 'PoopGobbler' that's disgusting dude. also, it may be time to take a shower and move out of your mom's basement. just a thought.
As a Main mage player, I agree that the quest created a bad state of the game, mainly because Blizzard continued to print cards that recast the 5 cost reward, the reward itself should allow a 1 turn combo opportunity not 5 or 10 or 15.
I don't know what's more toxic, Quest Mage or this guy aggressively defending one of the most toxic deck in cardgame history.
ONCE PER GAME ON TIME WARP!!!!!
Anyways, they still need to do something about shadow priest and pirate rogue in wild. I know that something needs to be done about Voidtouched Attendant and Shadowbomber needs to lose an attack or two.
what is so bad about just letting wild be wild?? maybe get better at the game instead of complaining about every deck you're not good enough to beat
Long overdue change for Open the Waygate quest. Glad it can't be spammed over and over now.
spammed? you mean looped with a tedious and high mana combination of cards that loses to any hand disruption? lucky for you blizzard will just nerf it out of the game so that you dont ever have to actually get good at it.
Agreed, cant count the number of times I was one turn from winning the game in wild and then lost because the mage got 3-6 extra turns. The nerf to the parrot got rid of a lot of it, but with all the broken cards in wild new ways of getting multiple extra turns soon appeared. Now they get one extra turn, so we should see Quest mage pretty much vanish.
This is over.
Infinite turn is finally gone
Rest in peace, we will not miss you (except that one time I played the deck, it was fun, for me at least..)
Floop gloop was broken glad it's gone too
Edit: Didn't saw they murdered Wheel of death too, 5 turn instead of 2 feels bad
it was fun for everyone that played it, not just you. so many players dedicated so much time to refining that deck and now its gone because of stupid people like you complaining instead of getting better at the game. maybe you should consider why it was so fun when you played it and how all of the people that had so much fun playing it previously are now disappointed.
Hooray! Hopefully, it was worth the wait
