Guys lets look at it from a completely different perspective. With so many new cards the meta will take a lot of time to adjust. Perhaps there are not to many uberdecks you have to play and therefore you dont have to collect all the special cards. Perhaps we finally can concentrate more on the collection we have and build our own shit instead of netdecking all day.

the point is not the number of cards.

    but the quallity.

every XPack caome with 120+ cards. and only 50 or less make it to the meta.  the rest is trash.

I guess the advice to a new player is to just not spend gold on the oldest expansion and instead save for the next one, even if it means playing a deck of Classic cards until the new one comes out (I'd personally wait until I could buy packs on the day the expansion is released for maximum value, rather than buying one that's only got another expansion left, but that's just me).

    I AGREE WITH YOU.

the only way for a f2p player is totally skip one season saving tons of gold.

so the next year he can buy a decent amount of cards.

resulting in a play standard one year skip the other.

something i dont really think anyone would do.

the main problem is not really the amount you cna farm a year is the time you need.

lets say you have ALL classic set. and 0 gold at the start of standard season.

when you will have the gold to buy a good number of pack the next adventure / expansion will already be out.

a f2p player will always be playing behind.

this new format just dont let you save gold.

and for me thats is bad.

this fallacy about standard is good for new players is not true.  a new player will NEVER have the resources to play standard, at least not a fp2.

    What?? Why?? It's a resonable amount i think :/

imagine a casual player doing something like 5,6 games (= daily quest) every day trying to abandon every 40gold quest ->60 gold a day-> 60x365=21900 gold ... 3500 for the adventure so 18400 for packs, 92 packs for each expansion, not bad for such a casual player

     wrong, here more precise numbers.

average gold earned by day from quests.  47.75

total gold from quests only in a year = 17429

in summa expansions are really bad. way to much to keep the pace.

in fact f2p players are screwed. by the time they have saved enough gold the next standard season will already be beginning.

I just read the article, and im gonna assume you skimmed it. This articles actually explains that you can keep a competitive deck by playing for free but you will just basically have the absolute minimum number of legenderies needed the compete. The best of the best legendaries, such as archmage antonidas, Justicar Trueheart, Dr.Boom, etc.
Furthermore it actually states that 58.24 is the average gold earned per day. Your number of 47.75 is just from the dailies and does not factor in the 10 gold per three wins. This article is factoring that a f2p player with an average of 3.15 wins a day, which is very doable. And the amount of gold earned a year being 21260. It show that the 2/1 and 1/2 realease of adventures and expansions rotating every year, one year you would have a deficit and one a surplus but it would even out. You can have a competitive deck for free.
Advice is the save your gold so you can open as many packs as possible when the expansions first release to keep up with the "whales" that will buy 50-70 packs with cash at the expansions release.
Also if you site a source, please read it and dont twist what it says for your own agenda.

you got it wrong. i just sayd 47.75 only for quests because the wrong formula posted.

it was just to correct it.

yes total gold is 58.25 per day average.

and yes it SHOULD  even out.  but with the 2 expansions and 1 adventure you will have DEFICT of  -2240 every year.

This cant be factoring in the 10 gold you get if you go ahead and get the third win. I never get less than 50 gold in a day other than the one day i get the free card pack, but just as often as i get the free pack quest, i get the 100 gold for 7 wins quest which is 120 and evens out the day i get the free pack back over 50 gold. 47.75 only makes sense if someone is doing the bare minimum and only getting 2 wins for 40 gold quest, or dont go get three wins when they get quest like deal 100 damage to enemy heroes or play 40 minions of a certain cost. I always get three wins, so i even get at least 10 gold on days i get the free pack.
did you read the link i posted ?

47.75 is from only the quests if you always reroll 40 quests.  this is the average you will get.

    quoting the article:

    Completing Quests Efficiently

In general, you’ll always want to complete your daily quests as efficiently as possible. Here’s a simple algorithm for maximizing your Gold income through quests:

    1. Always re-roll 40 Gold quests.
    2. Always complete a quest when your quest log is full.

If you’re an uber-casual player, you don’t even have to complete your non-40 Gold quests on the day you get them. You can wait until your quest log is full. It’s pretty simple isn’t it?

Personally, I like to do my daily quests on ranked ladder so I can climb for ranked rewards while I earn my daily quests. Many players I know do this as well, and climb to Rank 5 each season just to receive the Golden Epic as a reward.

Calculating Yearly Gold and Dust Income

According to this post from the official Hearthstone forums, the expected odds for receiving each quest is as follows:

    <colgroup><col width="106" /><col width="79" /><col width="78" /></colgroup>
    Quest Wins Gold %
    2 40 60.71%
    3 50 16.07%
    5 60 17.86%
    7 100 1.79%
    0 0 3.57%

Using this formula from Reddit to calculate the expected Gold value of each quest with a re-roll, I’ve found that this is what you can expect to earn each year in Gold, assuming the player completes whichever quest they re-roll each day. The minutes per day row assumes a 50% winrate at 8 minutes per game.

    <colgroup><col width="106" /><col width="79" /></colgroup>
    Gold Earned
    Daily Quest 47.75
    Gold per Win 3.33
    Gold per Day 58.24
    Wins per Day 3.15
    Minutes per Day 50
    Total Gold 21260

In addition, I’ve also calculated the expect number of Expert packs earned from quests each year and the expected Dust income from that as well, assuming each pack yields approximately 102.82 Dust.

    <colgroup><col width="106" /><col width="79" /></colgroup>
    Quest Packs
    Tavern Brawl 52
    Spectate Quest 13
    Total Expert Packs 65

    <colgroup><col width="106" /><col width="79" /></colgroup>
    Dust Earned
    Reward Packs 6687
    Ranked Rewards (Rank 15) 1860
    Total Dust 8550

How Much Gold and Dust Do We Need?

The previous section dovetails nicely into our next section where we’ll analyze exactly how much Gold and Dust we need to keep pace with Blizzard’s expansion schedule. I’m making an assumption here (which may not be true in the future) that Blizzard will continue releasing new cards every 4 months — alternating between single-player adventure and expansion.

Personally, I feel like a 75% complete collection from an expansion is each to fulfill the requirements for our minimally viable collection, with the remaining dust from duplicates used to craft critical cards missing from the packs you opened. Thus, we get the table below.

Note an even year means it’s a year with 2 expansions and 1 adventure, whereas an odd year is a year with 2 adventures and 1 expansion. For a Goblins vs Gnomes sized expansion, 100 packs should yield you about 75% of the cards.

    <colgroup><col width="106" /><col width="79" /><col width="78" /><col width="42" /><col width="40" /></colgroup>
Gold Spent Expansions Adventures Total Remaining
    Even Year 20000 3500 23500 -2240
    Odd Year 10000 7000 17000 4260
    Average Year 15000 5250 20250 1010

This shows that on even years we’ll have a budget deficit, which should be covered by the surplus from odd years. Between both years, the extra Gold we should have left after a 2 year cycle is approximately ~1000 Gold, which may cover some variance in our calculations.

Now, let’s move onto our projected dust costs. We’re going to make some fuzzier calculations here though. If we use the amount of dust we earn from opening Expert packs from Tavern Brawl and “Watch and Learn” quests in our calculation, and estimate that every 100 packs we open will yield approximately ~2500 Dust in duplicates, this shows that we can craft 2 Legendaries, 6 Epics, and 2 Rares from each Goblins vs Gnomes sized expansion in the future, with plenty of room to spare.

    <colgroup><col width="106" /><col width="79" /><col width="78" /><col width="42" /><col width="40" /></colgroup>
Dust Spent Expansions Adventures Total Remaining
    Even Year 9200 0 9200 5600
    Odd Year 4600 0 4600 7075
    Average Year 6900 0 6900 6340

    jump the ship now.

a f2p will never have enough gold to keep up with standard

when you get a good collection... the next one will already have started.

Thats not quite true. If you have only spare time, then yes you are right. But if you play your arena runs, quests and the every week tavern brawl you can craft yourself the most important cards you need. But it comes with a heavy investment of time and its understandable that this is not for everyone.
I think the best tactic is it to pick a class you like and get all the important cards for it. Stay with that class. Plus you always can concentrate on classic packs, since they can be used in both formats.

well i will give you that. IF you play with only 1 class for the season.

and grind your ass for a win with other classes to farm quests you can start to play competitive with that one deck of your after +- 5 months of farming every day.

    this dont make sense.

antonidas was near trash tier before GvsG and spare parts.

the only card that make it work now is Ronin.

I've never seen anyone playing Rhonin.

    still not that effective.

    maybe only at freeze mage.

but spare parts is what have made him useful

    and they are gone now.

Yeah "maybe" lol, it's called a win condition.
And Antonidas limits design space for mage spells.
    And devs don't like Antonidas.
And nobody likes infinite value cards.

    that's the point.
why remove the win condition of a deck ?

he is just one of many win more cards.

if they change every cards that win the game for you if the opponent can't answer...  control is dead.

for me Tyrion is a bigger ofender.
