Personally, I think the emote system has done more to create a toxic gaming atmosphere than just being able to talk to opponent's regularly.
1) It adds a level of sarcasm. Every emote has a sarcastic tone behind it, from "greetings" to "well played" and everything in between (we're looking at you "thank you". While Hearthstone is advertised in its animated commercial to be about being friendly and making friends, the interface has done more to create a sarcastic and "hateful" atmosphere than friendly and competitive.
2) Opening a chat ability that you can activate and deactivate at will seems like it would be more effective. There are numerous times where I would like to actually greet my opponent or tell them that I really liked their play, but instead I get a sarcastic "thank you" or "oops" emote and then they proceed to make their move. If you try to add anyone after the fact, they either ignore you, or berate you and block you.
I've had games that went really well, both for myself and for my opponent and I have wanted to follow up with them afterwards on great plays that were made, really good momentum swings on both sides, and the eventual outcome, but because of how the system is set up, I cannot and because of how toxic the Hearthstone atmosphere is with salty players, nobody wants to add you after-the-fact because they don't want to deal with the insults and beratement.
I wish Blizzard would re-evaluate the emote system and implement some kind of a chat system that might help rebuild a friendly community. I've found a few Facebook groups that maintain a friendly atmosphere, and I've really enjoyed being apart of them, but even then you find the salty, bitter ones regularly that need to be weeded out.

Got them with spell hunter, ended with 30 HP and 5 armor haha.
And I got a golden Lord Jaraxxus in my pack. Feels good

Obviously good with Lab Recruiter in a miracle-like rogue deck. But good enough? I think there'll be better minions to bounce back to your deck.

You sure have a lot of anger in you, wow
*Talking to that Herkull guy, hit reply instead of quote

So his 9 mana card that resurrect 7 different minions that died?
Went like this:
1st-time: Oh wow, that is a powerful card! Good thing I have a Brawl.
2nd time: Oh wow... Good thing I can manage with my Sleep with the Fishes . At least he used both now.
...
3rd time: What? Oh well, with careful trading... ok, here we go. I'm ok now. He's almost in fatigue.
4th time: What?! Scr** that.

A way to give Lesser Emerald Spellstone some value in an odd deck as the Secret played would trigger it. Additionally you get a card draw (notice "Draw two cards" instead of the "Draw a card" seen on Spider Ambush! and the likes) for the sacrifice of your even Cards.
With two of these in your decks, that is 6 card drawns if you get to draw all your Tracker's Loots. It's really good, but can't be abused as hunter's don't have the rogues tools to do so.
All in all I think it would give a good tool for hunter's odd-Cost decks to work.
