One potential drawback of the quest version is that you need to dedicate deck slots to the quest itself and items to complete it (books, tomes). Here you can dedicate those slots to card draw/survivability, which is a huge deal imho.
I feel you new a bit of redundancy. Like a second apprentice for a barrier. Played three games and one combo piece was always bottom three cards. Getting the combo one turn earlier is huge.
Isn't the Basilisk too easy to remove? The stealth on the Wasp is a big deal, it can can lock down a Bog Creeper in your opponent's hand giving you the opportunity to smorc.
I agree that on curve the basilisk is superior though. Forcing the opponent to spend a hero power AND a minion to remove it is great.
Overall, despite similar, they are really different cards imho, and they serve different purposes (one early game oriented and one late game oriented). Depending on the strategy and the curve of your deck you might pick one over the other. But yeah, on pick 1 you might favour the curve card (so the basilisk)
I thought for a second it was in the opponent deck. Fiuh.. I still remember the few games in arena that I lost because of beneath the ground. You always drew the ambush as the next card, and it turn out an early free 4 4 in arena is game deciding!
It's almost identical to the list I am using, I have Barnes in place of the evil bird. You have 4 juicy target that are game winning (cairne, LK, scalebanes), plus the captains, which are not bad if you have pirates in play, and some taunts.
What do you think about the Skelemancer? I am using a Wickerflame Burnbristle and a Corpsetaker instead. I feel that if you do not give skelemancers taunt they are useless. Also, even if you five them taunt, against aggro they can kill you before you get to use the 8 8, while two minions with taunt and divine shield protects you really well. You lose a bit against AOEs, but as long as you do not overextend you should be fine.
I also cut the Lich King for the good old The Curator: it is less of a swing when it gets black nighted, and imho provides similar value (even more, some of the death knight cards are useless)
Sure, but I still think that it is better than the naga corsair, when you high roll it is going to be tough to deal with it. Although.. the naga corsair is much better when you do not have a weapon, and the +1 on the weapon comes with initiative (you can use it now). So, at the end of the day it is a close call, and it won't change the power level of the pirate warrior deck imho.

Not sure I like where mage is going with all those "high cost spells" sinergies..

So it's the spell that costs two less? I thought it was the 4/5...
