While constructed is bad that you tend to play the same 5 decks, this is actually worse that you are playing against the same 10 cards. Even if they took away the grinding and let people more easily craft everything this would still be basically the same with the same problems. They forgot to add variety and the matches are too quick to feel good, win or lose.
The lack of variety, and probably how quick and easy everything gets are big issues. I am not sure why the fights are over so quick, because you are left with an empty feeling as a result. There's a point where you figured out a good comp and things went from kind of challenging to you are winning everything. I'd say the mode needs about 4 times the mercs, at least, right now there's so many mercs that no one is using. It's a weird thing that some aspects of hearthstone are present but they are lost in the BOOM BOOM BOOM nature of the fights. The sad part is you are grinding to make the matches even quicker and easier. It's a circular mess.
If you just view it as mindless pve content then it's passable, though while there is plenty of boring pve content, it ain't all that. Like the duel like pve content was fantastic even though duels is actually terrible, it's a case where adding pvp didn't improve the mode. If they just made a pve version of battlegrounds I am sure plenty of people would like it, with no timer and the ability to quit in the middle of a run and go back to where you left off. And yes they will probably have to give the ai some sort of edge/make battlegrounds a bit different in that case to make up for bad ai.
I don't know how many different modes they have planned, if we'll eventually have a hundred of them, but mercs should have maybe been mini tested to the public as not a MAIN MODE, because it's built up to a point that is underserving for what it is. As I said before I think with the right updates this COULD be a lot better, but there's no guarantee they will do that. You can only review it based on what it is now.
The first impression it gives you is terrible, then it gets better, then the pointless grind/pay to win aspect rears it's ugly head.
The real issue is lack of variety, there are very few mercs in general and no goofy stuff you can just have fun with, even if it's ineffective, like most of the other modes have. While all the abilities aren't completely identical, there is a samey feel to everything.
I feel like it could get good with updates, right now there's just so little to this mode.
Bought a few packs, flipped through the abilities... I feel like every merc basically does the same very few simple things. Where's the stupid? Where's the goof off abilities, why is everyone doing the same basic things? There is practically no variety.
You definitely run into opponent boards that are on a power level that's hard to reason in your mind super early. Like you'll power level to 5 and it's like your opponent has been on that level for 4 turns already with 4 6 drops already and everything already buffed up the wazoo.
Feels very anti-phone right now, I already got used to resetting my phone so that I would have time to think, now you HAVE to do it, constantly. Lots of lines that are pirate-esque, but aside from that some of the fights take way too long.
I hate to say the meta is bad because they at least did what I think they should've been doing with every expansion, making big changes to every class, not just adding a tribe occasionally. But it feels like they didn't really test this.
While I am doing very well this meta, I don't think they took into account the time everything takes to animate. I find I am running out of time way too much, where my only chance to be competitive is to constantly reset my phone. Not sure why they don't speed the animations up, like they do when there's lag, when the match will take an ungodly amount of time. Though part of the problem is how many lines involve you buying and selling a ton of cards, 'fun' to be a phone user now. The anti-phone meta is here.
There is nothing fun about leapfrogger. It single handedly kills all the other plusses they added this expansion. Aside from the weird way it handles deathrattles, it can skip the opponent's turn.
Honestly I can't be bothered to read ad nauseum about a new mode. Or maybe what little I've read I have no interest in. They've explained this and presented it very poorly. Feels like "busy work", like a lot of phone games.
I've never played a warlock that drew practically their entire deck on turn 5, until today. I thought that kind of stuff was relegated to Wild. One of the most frustrating experiences of my entire hearthstone career. I encourage everyone to uninstall.
That's probably why Priest has that Quest, because the developers know they sped up the game too much. The only fun I've had with Quest Priest is beating immune adventure bosses. Generally the games you win against real people aren't because of the Quest. And the few times you are about to beat them because of it... they concede, robbing you of that sweet animation.
I don't recall ever losing to the deck as Quest Warlock, Quest Mage felt like a free win with the ability to fully heal repeatedly. Generally you have to keep killing your own minions to delay their quest completion.
I've been having fun with my unstoppable Sword of a Thousand Truths Demon Hunter.... I'm pretty sure every win I have is due to opponent misplays. But honestly I'm surprised Elwynn Boar has a not completely useless standard deck he can hang out in.
I WANT to have fun with Quest Priest, but every single person concedes before I play the kill your opponent card, because I usually don't even need the card at that point to win. Also generally you just lose.

The comp I usually win with is Xyrella, Diablo, Blinkfox(not a good merc, just in there for "fun"), Gul'dan, Baron Geddon, Tirion
I have a lot of green and blue, but only 4 red mercs, none of which are good which is why I don't run any red.
