No, then many cards should also be adjusted and it is only a highlander hunter now.
The quest wins at least half of all games for me. It is a very important winning condition in this deck.

Tech Card: skulking gesit, dirty rat, Hecklebot (and other card that can discrupt combo)
Good Deck against this deck: Secret Mage (with Potion of Polymorph and Explosive Runes) Jade Druid and Odd Warrior (tons of armor)

I am glad you enjoy this deck.
I totally agree that "the spirit of this deck is exactly what I enjoy about hearthstone and an itch I can't quite scratch with any other card game." That's also the major reason I play hs today - I played it since naxx and get bored recently before this expansion until I constructed this deck. Laddering becomes fun and creative since then.
I watched several your replays and noticed that you still have some misplays (maybe that's one of your early games with this deck) like dropping apprentice without comboing it with flamewaker or cyclone for no reason, or using the quest spell on turn 1 when facing big priest (you can save it to combo with flamewaker and cyclone as it is a spell too!). I would say you need to have a better understanding / overall strategy of this deck if you want to climb higher like to rank 5, but in the first place, I felt so lucky if this deck brought back the fun of hs to you again. Cheers.

Since quest is also a 1-mana cost spell, it can be comboed with apprentice and cyclone if you have both to gain one extra random spell for free (and in some rare cases with flamewaker), and it does not really matter when you play the quest before you play your first non-starting-deck spell.

I am sorry for your bad experience with this deck. It is indeed a hard one if you don't know how to win with it. It is not a trash - someone (at least 2 I knew) used the deck to get legend with a winrate ~70%.
I will share some games here and hopefully it can give you a rough idea about how to win the game - it usually depends on your hand as well as some RNG factors, which makes this deck fun and difficult to play at the same time.

If you don't believe in me just give a try and I am sure you will like this deck, if you like casting tons of spells and dumping tons of damage in one/two turns
How to play this deck:
Save your 0/1 cost spells to ~turn 5-6 to combo with apprentice \ cyclone \ flamewaker. Do not waste them unless there are a lot of enemy minions with high threats on the board. Use giants/flamewakers and time warp to end the game. The quest can be completed usually in turn 6-8 in this deck. Do not hesitate to use it even you are not sure that you can deal enough damage. Just believe that miracles do happen!
If this deck gets popular somewhat I will add more details about mulligans and how to play against different types of decks.
My friend used this deck to get legend in two days with ~70% winrate.
