It is hilarious how blatantly orchestrated the whole thing is and how predictable their reaction.
The real issue is not that you get less gold, but that they have added one more monetary system on top of the purchase of loot boxes aka card packs. The Tavern Pass is what they want to promote, which is essentially a time saver straight from the mobile f2p games.
That is why they dont provide the easiest solution, which is to increase the average XP/hour. It nullifies their new monetary system, since the players, especially those who used to grind gold for the new card packs, wont be forced to buy their time saver.
HS right now must be one of the most expensive F2P games in the world. Both current and new players have to pay every year a fortune to participate and keep up with the game's released content. If not, they will simply dont be able to play the game. And what is sad, this more aggressive monetization wont affect Blizzard's future profits at all, because a lot of those players are addicted to the game and have already invested a lot of time and money on this game.
Hearthstone is dead, at least for us who refuse to become the harlots of those greedy corporations.
