Hey. I know this is off-topic and everything, but would you guys like me to do a little article on Cycles?

As an ex-MTG player (long live aggrocontrol!) and newbie HS cards designer I vote for YES.

Also here is my favourite card/game design video. Is from Mark 'MaRo' Rosewater, Head Designed of MTG, at GDC 2016 and I really want to share it with you :)
Yeah, this video rules. I've read some of his articles too, but I'm not familiar with the fine details of magic, so sometimes I'm a little lost. But this video is great, anyone who plays games can get it.
I'd really like to see more videos like this. There is a great podcast, "Remaking Magic", that actually got me into playing HS. I was just listening as an amatuer game designer working on a table top RPG, and they talked up HS so much on the podcast, that I decided to give it a shot. Sadly, they stopped recording last year.
Cogito, I'd love to read an article on cycles, especially one aimed at HS players/makers, that still brought in knowledge from other games.

    Alright, here are my reviews.

    • nobravery's "Arcane Arts Assembly of Azeroth". I like the concept of a great symposium or assembly as an expansion. It's very much like Disco Karazhan, where things get silly and lighthearted. I'm not entirely sold on the concept of an magic conference though. I think if you had a budget and a few artists, you could probably come up with some good designs to set the mood and atmosphere. I don't really understand how the Chair Millhouse mechanic fits the sets theme. He jumps in and out of the deck, he's the center of the show, when I'd think an academic conference on magic might be more about demonstrating innovative new theories and discoveries. Its an interesting mechanic, but I think it'd be better suited to some kind of Fishing theme, 'catch and release' or maybe pinball? It doesn't feel connected. I like the mechanic around discovering minions with specific attack/health, but in my experience there are many unused and seldom used stat-lines. Discover works best with big pools of cards, not little ones.
    • Zukuu's "Bruning Crusade": Nice typo with Bruning Crusade! But more seriously, I'm not yet sold on the Fee or Field mechanics. One thing that really sets HS apart from Magic is card-tapping. In MtG, you're constantly choosing to tap and trigger minions, flipping little switches. HS rarely has that, or only has it conditionally through a card like Gadgetzan Auctioneer. The UI interface suggestion is clumsy. I'd just put buttons on the tokens, little switches. Not an unreasonable interface change. I like your take on Kil'jaeden a lot! The Dark Portal is cool. I'd have liked to see some field effects, but I guess they're all class cards?
    • ThisOtherGuyTox's "The Destination is Draenor": I'm liking these legendaries. I wish Longshot functioned more like Gallywix, you'd take the minion and give your opponent a single coin in payment. Nerzhul is an interesting card, I'd totally play it in a number of different aggro/token decks. The set's story is a little strange. The concept of a tourist company trying to develop business and a secret group of protectors opposing them doesn't quite fit. Is Ner'zhul part of this secret alliance against the capitalists? I think this overall concept could play a lot better with goblins invading some night-elf sanctuary forest or something. The justification for the keywords feels a little flimsy, but you're getting somewhere. Keep developing these stories for the next round.
    • Shatterstar's "Rebuilding the Outland": This is still one of my favorite concepts. The keywords line up with the theme very well. That said, I think you picked the wrong cards to showcase. Ancient Seed is a wondeful example of your Shaping Mechanic. Reliquary Botanist would be a good study example, but I might flip the battlecry and study effects? I don't like seeing Adapt in your set, I expect that to end with Un'goro. I think a neutral sidequest would have been good too.
    • Demonxz95's "Invasion of the Void": Honestly, I'm not liking this set. I don't think the void orb mechanic is a good idea. Its a second mana track that brings nothing to the game but more resource management. New mechanics should be new mechanics, not just duplicated mechanics. Most of these void cards would be banned in Arena I imagine. You say your set is 'darker than usual'. Its not darker than Whispers. Whispers, like some mtg sets like Innistrad, created new mechanics to build suspense and dread. Watching c'thun build, not knowing when he might destroy the board, seeing the deathrattles pile up before N'zoth hits the board, The dread of wondering what Ysharj might pull from a deck, the sheer shock and terror of Yog-Sarron going nuclear!! Nothing in this set is dark or scary. Void orbs are just resource management for typical card effects.
    • Hauauftastatur's "Happy Barrens Safari": I dig the idea of the sentry mechanic, but its very confusing. I often can't tell whether the sentry minion is getting buffed or if you're buffing the minion across from it. I do like that this kind of positioning mechanic is probably too complicated for all of the pirate warrior bots to handle. Your sample legendary, the Leaper, is confusing. Why would i ever target it? Its a neat mechanic, but unless I actually just want to hit the adjacent minion, I'll always just not target it, and you'll never see its special power. I do like all the Harpy cards, those are good designs.

Okay... posting these. The rest to come! Hopefully!

Been too busy working on the expansion competition, but I wanted to go ahead and share what I worked up for this comp, even though I missed the deadline.

I spent waaaay to much time looking for three pieces of art by the same artist. These were actually done for some other game called Talisman, but I couldn't find their card text for that game.

I saved these images, but in making them, it was kind of an exercise in absolute simplicity. I think the finished cards should have much more interesting names, tied to WC lore. And the mana costs and stat-lines should be varied.... I'm just not sure how. Does one type of deck need to discover a freeze early? Does another deck want a mid-sized minion followed by another midrange windfury minion? I could ascribe any 'balanced' mana/attack/health line to these cards, but I want something more specific than that.

Anyway, thought I'd share this 1st sketch of what I was working on. Looking forward to upvoting!

     #4 - Dragonspiral - ZardozSpeaks

What I like about this expansion is that it has such a strong identity. Zardoz has chosen a very clear direction for his expansion, where a lot of others have a mixed flavor and a bit of everything. I think every single card in Dragonspiral screams Dragonspiral! Also, Hearthstone already has one expansion about dragons (BRM), but Zardoz managed to make this one feel very different.. in a good way! Also, I love Brightwing.

Glad you like my expansion so much. I've spent a lot of my time nailing down themes and corresponding mechanics, less so with actual neutral card design. Honestly, most of the work I did in round 2, I should have already done in round 1. I hope my cards don't suffer for it.
And thanks for the feedback earlier in the thread. I didn't respond then because I didn't want to clutter the thread while others were seeking feedback. Your suggestions were helpful, I went with a few of them. In other cases it was good to see how an outsider views a given aspect, and told me how I needed to sell my cards and mechanics in the descriptions.
I think Theme and Presentation is really important for this competition. I don't think it's all about aesthetics, but there is a reason blizzard doesn't just dump a set of cards. They release trailers, teasers, short movies, animations, interviews, etc, in order to sell the expansions mechanics, theme and cards.
So when I read this review, I feel like I'm succeeding at what I set out to do. Glad you like Brightwing. I think it'd be a fun card. I even considered giving it Paradox: Stealth. For the intrepid player who manages to play it twice.
    Quote from Livienna >>

Congrats to everyone who got their submissions in!!! I personally feel like the neutral set was difficult, perhaps will be the hardest set of these four 21-card sets. Well done to all :D

I totally agree. 21 Neutral cards was hard, especially because I think a lot of us were putting our set's main themes into specific class concepts. Neutrals have to be a bit generic, and go anywhere.

And yeah, props to everyone who finished their entry. Its an impressive accomplishment, in its own right.

I suck at flavor text. And honestly I don't like much of the flavor text in HS. Just bad puns. I really wish HS went with serious flavor text more like MTG, but I guess the overall tone of HS isn't serious enough for that.

I'm going to write up reviews of the entries later, once the thread locks. I think I can handle doing them all. 30ish entries isn't too much to type up.

I just hope page 2 fills, I don't want to be measured against page 1 :(

    TIME PARADOX!!!!!

While gazing into the future, Nozdormu the Timelord accidentally resurrected every dragon that has ever lived! In order to contain the catastrophe, Nozdormu has sealed away Azeroth's dragons and their most sacred sites into a sealed dimension called The Dragonspiral. From atop the great Wyrmrest Mountain, the five Dragon Aspects of Azeroth, Nozdormu, Alexstrasza, Ysera, Kalecgos and the reborn Neltharion seek to end the crisis, while deep in the boneyards of The Dragonblight, renegades and time anomalies like Malygos, Deathwing, Murozond, Galakrond, Neltharaku and Sindragosa seek to escape this prison realm and conquer Azeroth.

The Dragonspiral Wars have begun! Join Wrathion the Black Prince as he guides you through the strife and chaos of this strange dimension.

    Example Cards

An enigmatic schemer, Wrathion the Black Prince seeks to make the most of the situation, playing all of the great dragon's of Azeroth for his own ends.

The Black Prince is a FREE LEGENDARY given to every player upon receiving their first Dragonspiral pack. As you might guess, Dragonspiral contains lots of new dragons and dragon synergy mechanics. This legendary dragon lets new players put some extra power into their decks and gives control decks the ability to extend the game a little longer.

Seeking to return the timeline to it's rightful state, Brightwing has joined the Wyrmrest Accord. Should the great bronze dragon Nozdorumu be slain, many terrible beasts would be set loose on Azeroth.

Brightwing is a tricky combo-breaker. Tech this dragon into your deck and avoid blasts of burn spells that might otherwise end the match. But in order to gain this elusiveness, you must be holding a dragon in your hand.

Dragonhold is a new keyword to describe an old mechanic, and as such many cards from Blackrock Mountain and earlier sets will be updated with this new keyword. The Dragonhold Keyword is associated with the great dragons of the Wyrmrest Accord: Alexstrasza, Kalecgos, Nozdormu, and Ysera.

The dead have been reborn! Again! Sindragosa rises from the Dragonblight and is intent rebuilding her brood, so that they might serve the Lich King once more.

Sindragosa, Frostmother is a late game control card that fills your side of the battlefield with frozen dragons. This card interacts with a new mechanic, The Dragongrave. Whenever dragons are killed or discarded, they put into a dragon graveyard, where their effects might be reused, re-summoned and sometimes repurposed.

The Dragongrave keyword is associated with Neltharion, the Earthwarden, the great black dragon who rules the earth, it's caverns and graves. But in the wilderness of the Dragonblight great beasts like the Protodragon Galakrond grow fat on the endless bones of dead dragons.

Strange rainbow colored dragons have been appearing in the Dragonspiral. Whimsical but destructive beings, these Spiraldragons threaten to destabilize the time stream!

Prismatic Iconoclast has the new Paradox keyword. While Paradox cards have potent effects the first time they are played, they have strange mirrored and inverted effects upon their second use, by any player. This means mirror matches and stolen cards will play a big part in Paradox decks.

Paradox cards are associated with the time anomalies Deathwing and Murozond and also Kalecgos and Nozdormu as they seek to repair the time stream.

Tell me more about the Neutral themes of Dragonspiral

The neutral cards of Dragonspiral are meant to synergize with the 3 core mechanics of Dragonspiral and find use in the classes that use the new keywords. Neutral minions represent allies of the Wyrmrest Accord, moral dragon hunters, unaligned dragons and some of the reborn time anomalies dwelling in the Dragonblight, including:

    • Malygos the Mad and his loyal servants and insane mortal wizards
    • Sindragosa the Frostmother, the Lich King's most fearsome Frostwyrm and her undead 'children'
    • Spiraldragons, mysterious dragons born in the Dragonspiral and the source of many time paradoxes.

The full 135 card set would also include renegade black dragons like Nefarian, Onyxia and their servants.

Tell me more about the Class themes of Dragonspiral

In Dragonspiral, Every class is associated with one of Azeroth's greatest dragons.

Druid: Ysera the Dreamer.  The great emerald dragon Ysera has called upon her druid allies for aid. Druid cards in Dragonspiral will focus on a mixture of ramp effects and deck interactions, putting creatures to 'sleep' by shuffling them back into the deck. Druids will also have smaller faerie dragon allies with unique effects at low mana costs.

Hunter: Galakrond, Dragonfather. The first of the protodragons Galakrond is one of prehistory's greatest catastrophes. Part beast and part dragon, these primordial creatures gain power through cannibalizing their brethren. Many of Azeroth's greatest hunters have joined Galakrond in his endless hunt through the Dragonblight boneyards. Hunter cards in Dragonspiral will focus on the Dragongrave mechanic, deathrattles and dual-tribe Beast/Dragon minions.

Mage: Kalecgos the Arcane. Azeroth's greatest wizards have travelled to Wyrmrest Temple to aid Kalecgos the Aspect of Magic in his research of the Dragonspiral, hoping to find away to restore the timeline and return the right dragons to Azeroth. Mage cards in Dragonspiral will feature Dragonhold and Paradox mechanics, heavy on RNG and reactive control affects, alongside some fearsome blue dragons.

Paladin: Nozdormu the Timelord. Aghast at what he has done, Nozdormu has found a temporary solution, containing the time anomalies within the Dragonspiral. Azeroth's most steadfast Paladins have rallied to Wyrmrest Keep to defend the Timelord and undo the paradox effects of the Dragonspiral. Paladin cards in Dragonspiral will focus on secrets, heavy taunt minions, and reverting and countering your opponent's plays.

Priest: Deathwing, Destroyer. Reborn, Deathwing and his twilight dragon offspring have begun vampirically feeding upon their uncorrupted brethren. In awe of of the unholy power of these creatures, Shadow Priests from across the cosmos have rallied to Deathwing's side and return him to Azeroth. Priest cards in Dragonspiral are heavy on card stealing and Paradox effects, along with new Shadow Word spells and destructive twilight dragon minions.

Rogue: Murozond the Infinite. In a far flung future, one of many possibilities, dwells the paradoxical Murozond, a inverted and twisted version of the Timelord Nozdormu. Set loose upon the present, Murzond and the Infinite Dragonflight seek to escape the Dragonspiral and rob the past, present and future of all its secrets and treasures. Many intrepid thieves and burglars have allied themsevles with the time anomaly, seeking to learn his secrets and manipulate time itself. Rogue cards in Dragonspiral make heavy use of the Paradox keyword to generate random cards and transform their cards, creating chaining combo effects.

Shaman: Neltharion, Earthwarden. The original Earth Aspect Neltharion has been reborn and is sworn to return Azeroth to it's rightful state, including eventually laying himself to rest. As guardian of Azeroth's caverns, graves and tombs, Neltharion has called upon the wisest shamans to help him navigate this perplexing crisis. Shaman cards in Dragonspiral focus on the Dragongrave mechanic and Silence, resurrecting dragons or sending them to an early death.

Warlock: Neltharaku, the Crawling. The unspeakable horror Neltharaku, a twisted dragon made of pure void energy seeks to corrupt the Dragonspiral and open it to the Twisting Nether. The most vile and evil of Warlocks have ventured to Dragonspiral to aid Neltharaku in his Netherdragons nefarious scheme. Warlock cards in Dragonspiral focus on the Dragongrave Mechanic and Discarding, often utilizing effects of dragons that are already dead. Dragonspiral also introduces the new Demon/Dragon dual-tribe for Netherdragons.

Warrior: Alexstrasza, Lifebinder. Sometimes in order to defend life itself, one must go to war. Alexstrasza the great red dragon has raised a mighty army of warriors and dragons in order to lay to rest the time anomalies of the Dragonspiral. Warrior cards in Dragonspiral will feature mighty weapons, dragonscale armor, the Dragonhold mechanic, fearsome red dragons and cards that prevent them from dying.

posted a message on C'Thun: What Went Wrong?

While C'thun decks didn't top the meta, I wonder if that was even the intention. I joined HS durring Whispers, and building a budget C'thun Mage, kind of a hybrid freeze/tempo deck, was exceptionally cheap and good enough to get me to rank 15 my first month of play and rank 10 the second month. Later I transitioned into a legitimate freeze mage deck.

I don't know how to start with, but I've met a quite awkward issue.

China banned several VPNs this month, which leads to me having no access to imgur, and thus I wouldn't be able to see any image everyone submits here until I find a new VPN. It's also hard for me to load the hearthpwn site without VPN; it takes about 2 minutes to load a page, and 2 more minutes to load this post editor. I'll still participate in the competition (I'll ask my friends to upload my images to imgur and they'll give me the direct link of each card), but maybe I can neither post my cards for feedback nor give feedback to other people anymore.

That's too bad. I hope you find another VPN. I'm sure it impacts more than just browsing hearthpwn. I didn't realize Imgur was blocked in china. Makes me wonder if we all should find another image host, disappointing to think to people in china can't see what other people are making here.

Hey guys, what do you mean by "design space" opened for your cards due to Knights of the Frozen Throne?

I presume we can't add hero cards to our expansion because it's unique to the Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion (same thing with class Quests (Un'Goro) and Inspire (The Grand Tournament)).

I also think it would be very weird for us to suddenly have a bunch of Lifelink cards no? I mean, Lifelink is more of Knights of the Frozen Throne's thing right? Or are we gonna treat it like Discover?

I think Lifelink will be like Poisonous, it will be retroactively put on cards like Wickerflame Burnbristle and Mistress of Pain. So, since our set presumably publishes after KotTF, we could use it. But yeah, I wouldn't expect anyone to have Hero cards. I bet we'll see that mechanic after this expansion, but not for quite some time, like Tri-class cards.
But DISCOVER. I really wish that had limited itself to League of Explorers or at least Year of Kraken sets. I don't want to see it become a perpetual keyword, and I'm glad we haven't seen any Discover cards in this new expansion. For my own custom set, I plan on not having any Discover effects.
