On the topic of complaints regarding poor battle tactics - Name one person in that group that has:

    • Experience commanding an army that large
    • Experience in battle tactics with an army that large
    • Experience fighting the NK and his army on a large scale and not one on one
    • Unlimited time and resources in order to make a million more trenches or catapults
    • Knowledge of the NK such that the group would know in advance that a single line of fire wouldn't protect them against wights, despite their one and only experience with fire and wights has proven successful

The only person who might have some military strategy is Davos, by way of his experience with Stannis, but Davos was a trusted friend and adviser, not a military commander.  The group was doing the best they could.  Their plan wasn't to defeat the NK's army on the battlefield anyways.  And the Dothraki were merely doing what they've always done - waiting around for a fight charging in and fucking shit up.

In the Books, Jamie leads some pretty big armies in large battles. I think he had some in the show too (but maybe not this big). As for knowledge of the NK, nobody had that obviously, though I was a little surprised that after having Sam steal all those books from the Citadel, there wasn't something he found in there that would have helped make a big difference.

Hi I'm a day later because the episode is released at a later time in my country. Unfortunately I have to agree with everyone that this was a disappointing episode.

I'm not that bothered by the bad tactics used in the battle. My main problems with the battle were: 1. Why was it soooo damn dark? Even if it's night time you can still adjust the lighting in such a way that we can actually see what is happening. 2. Plot armor once again reached critical levels. I expected so much more people to die, but since they didn't it makes this season's second episode feel pretty damn meaningless. I did really like that Bran thanked Theon and told him he is a good man, and therefore it felt like a good moment for Theon to die. Apart from that the only 'main' characters who died were Jorah, Beric, Edd and Lyanna Mormont. I liked Edd, Beric and Jorah but they had already outlived their usefulness in the story, and I didn't give a shit about Lyanna.

About the Night King and his death: I have only read the first two books of a song of ice and fire (and I plan to read the rest) so I don't if it's more clear in the books that they are not just generic baddies, but when Bran said in the last episode that the goal of the night king is to erase mankind and all memory of it, for me that basically confirmed that the night king is just a generic bad guy. However, I was still secretly hoping that he wouldn't turn out that way, but I was obviously expecting too much from the writers by doing that. I hope GRRM will at least make them more interesting in the books. The night king's death was also pretty dumb. Arya's magical leap out of nothing made no sense at all. Also apparently all the other white walkers (who, by the way, did literally nothing the entire episode) also die when the night king dies, which is awfully convenient.

Now I'm just hoping that D&D will stay true to the ending George told them and tie up the remaining loose ends in a satisfying way. In that sense I'm actually glad they ended the white walker threat in this episode so now we can focus on the (hopefully) more interesting stuff.

Spoiler answer to your spoiler question regarding big difference between books and show:

There is no Night King in the books (at least not yet). In the books there is a legend about a  “Nights King” (see apostrophe!) who lived hundreds of years earlier. According to the legend, he was a commander of the Night’s Watch that had a romance with a woman having white skin and blue eyes. They ruled together at the wall and committed atrocities (including making sacrifices to the white walkers) for some time until they were overthrown by a combined force of wildlings and Northmen. That's it. He never appears as a character in the book. All this stuff about converting babies to white walkers, about killing all other wights and walkers by killing him, it's all made up by the show writers, not GRRM. The creation myth is also wrong in the show. In the show, the children of the forest created the Night King and the walkers to fight humans that were invading their land, but the walkers turned on them. In the books (well actually in the extra lore materials GRRM has published between books) the white walkers first appeared during a time of peace between the children of the forest and the first men. Though, so little has been written about their origin in the books, its possible the truth could be closer to what's in the show.

I enjoyed it (other than brightness issue, which really was annoying). I thought it was entertaining. I thought it was what the series has become since about 3-4 seasons ago: A fun fantasy epic that is NOT GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire. Rest in spoiler tag:

THERE WAS NO TRAGEDY IN THIS BATTLE. ASOIF has always been about subverting common tropes. The lack of deaths of significant characters in a battle of this magnitude was shocking, especially given the amount of random extras that died (tens maybe hundreds of thousands!).  Every person of note that dies had a heroic end---Jorah saving his love, Theon absolved, Ed saving a black brother, little Mormont slaying a giant... War is chaos, and in chaos things are not so neat. The bravest heroes may trip over an axe and impale themselves, or got shot by a stray arrow. Why not have some little imp wight take down Brienne? Or Jamie killed because of his gold hand? Sam die because he's too cowardly to fight back? Or Gilly killed by a crypt wight? Why the hell is Grey Worm still alive? These things happen in war, which was kind of the point of the story from the start. But I feel like the show has become so white washed now, as if people would rebel if any one of their beloved "good guys" dies (another thing, kind of weird having definitive good and bad guys now). I'm not saying everyone had to die, but in a show that always managed to shock and surprise, there was really not much shock or surprise last night. The "good guys" won, every essential character survived. I really hope the books go another direction, if GRRM lives long enough to finish them.

To me, the most offending combo of the meta is PreparationRaiding PartyWaggle PickDread Corsair (sometimes two). The amount of value there for 4 mana is just insane, and usually means game over on turn 3 or 4 for a two card combo.

Waggle Pick is the biggest offender, especially when compared to Truesilver Champion. Stats are identical, but one gives one of the best Rogue cards, played in nearly ever rogue deck since forever as a deathrattle, the other gives a tiny amount of heal that would not even be printable on a 0 mana card.

I think waggle pick should be bumped to 5/6 manna, or lower durability to 1, or get rid of the 2 mana cost reduction for the bounce.

Love this thread. I had the same issue with Carnivorous Cube and [card]Stoneclaw Totem[/card].

For the longest time I thought Auchenai Soulpriest was an evil rabbit, but those are horns not bunny ears.

posted a message on Take Faster Turns

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The game needs a fast-mode, or some kind option where players can pick fast-preferred, and if they get matched up against another fast-preferred player, turns are like 30 seconds max and the queue algorithm tries to match fast-preferred players
