Save all the time, spend gold on Arena as fast as you care to. Aim to save around 15K gold going into expansions, spend excess on packs.
The worst thing you can do is spend all your gold on packs in the Shop as soon as an expansion hits. Look ahead to future expansions if you plan on sticking with this game.
Believe it or not you can be less than average at arena and still come out ahead in prizes because of the way the rewards scale.
The explanation is that you will have some variance in your results and the prizes do not scale linearly with your final score, they increase more steeply as your wins go up. Once in a while you will score 5, 6 or even 7+ wins and the rewards will completely make up for the losses you suffered so far even though your total average is less than 3 wins per run.
As an extreme example this means you could go 0-3 11 times and 12-2 once making your average 1 win but your total rewards would be similar to going 4-3 every run. Point is the rare times you do good more than make up for the multiple times you do bad.
Whenever you open a legendary card, an invisible timer begins counting. It goes up every time you open a pack with no legendary. Once it hits 40, you're guaranteed a legends legendary in the next pack. You can't see the timer, and there's a separate timer for each expansion.
We don't know that's how it's coded. What we do know by sampling data is that opening a legendary becomes more and more likely at an increasing rate the longer you go without one until it becomes a certainty at pack 40.
There are sources statistically proving this is how it works but I get tired of retrieving the links every time someone disputes it.

They're gonna bend towards HoF'ing cards that people aren't likely to be hoarding duplicates of for extra dust.

As free-to-play I go Standard only. Crafting back into Wild is too painful.

There's also a card icon in the UI toolbar on the second row.

Probably worth it for dust value. The whole of Karazhan disenchants for 2950 dust.
