posted a message on Anyone want to play?

Hey guys, been on the forum for a while but haven't posted much since I got into the beta. I had a lot of fun the first few days, but slowly have become kind of bored I guess. I think the arena offers great replay value, but it's a bit expensive and it's unrealistic to play the game, for the arena, unless you're consistently 7+ wins, without forking over a good amount of cash in the process.

Is anyone interested in swapping battle tags and doing some battles? I think that would be fun. The only person on my friends list is my cousin, and he just got it recently so his constructed vs mine is pretty much a stomp fest.

Looking for some people to play with!

For reference I am Masters 1 and have arena GrandMaster Medal too.

posted a message on Legendaries in arena

Legendaries add some spice, but I'm pretty sure it's balanced in some sort of way. Sometimes I end up with like 6 or 7 rares, sometimes a few rares and an epic, one time I got 2 Illidans, that was fun but only won me the game once. On average my legendaries just burn one of their hard removals, rather than win me the game.

Pretty sure, unfortunately, all that math is wrong.

I'm 99% sure that blues said that the way mulligans work: Card is removed, new card is drawn, card is added back to deck and reshuffled. Thus it's actually impossible to draw the 'same' card twice, and if you mulligan two duplicates (and there are only 2 in deck, aka not arena) then it will be impossible to draw them again as part of the opening hand.

I'll look for the blue post.

    Edit: blue confirmation:

    Zeriyah

When you mulligan your cards, you do not have a chance to draw the cards you are mulliganing (is that even a word?) again. They are set aside, you draw your new cards, then the mulliganed cards will go back in your deck.

I disagree. I'm personally glad to see that people are being more active, myself included.

Sure there are a lot of posts without anything really being said, but that's how forums are. If someone answers a question posed in a thread, the appropriate spot to thank that person is in the thread. Doing so brings resolution to the question for others that have the same issue.

posted a message on The Official "1 Gold per Win!?" Thread

I think the cost of everything will actually increase when the game is released.

The free to play model is great, I think it's awesome and I love it for League of Legends, and I believe Riot Games has done it extremely well.

Consider the maximum possible IP/win in LoL (without any purchased boosts or anything) is 318 for first win of the day, or 168 otherwise for a 55 minute + game and the minimum for the same duration as 95. (http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Influence_Points) Now for the newest content it costs 6300 IP (or 7800 if you're anxious). That means that it takes roughly 42 hours (6300/~168) of wins - # of days played (win of the day =~ 1 hour of win) for one champion. For all losses that's more than 63 hours for the champion.

To consider that 100 games at 9 minutes / game it's much less for a pack of cards, not to mention the quests and other large bonus you can receive daily. In order for you to take 63 hours for a pack it would require you to play 420 games (that's 63 hours / 9 minutes). Granted, each card pack is not as significant a change as each champion in LoL and the two are different games, businesses, etc., but still. I think we can appreciate that they allow us to earn cards by playing.

posted a message on What is BREAD, does it fit well with HearthStone's arena

Thanks for the response. I feel like Alexstrasza as a bomb is pretty good, but I think it's hard to get to the point in the game, against some arena decks, where you can safely play her ftw.

Maybe the key to HS Arena is (B)RE(AD) and we just focus on being highly efficient removers!

Would love feedback from those that have played arena tho.

posted a message on Bang for your buck!

I wanted to start a thread here discussing the value of your real life dollar in HearthStone.

This will be a little ridden with math, but I don't think I'm going to simplify everything into linear equations when applicable. I'm also rounding the $.99 to $1, because.

I'm not yet in Beta because I suck, so correct any areas that I misunderstand from what I've seen.

You can spend your hard earned $ by entering the arena ($2 or 150g) or at the card shop ($3 for 2 packs, $50 for 40 packs). So what does this mean for you?

    The cost of card packs:

    Y=MX + B => Cost = (Change in Cost/Pack)Packs + Constant

    For 2 packs this means we have $3 = M * 2 + constant

    For 40 packs it's $50 = M * 40 + constant

    We can solve M as ($50 - $3) / (40 packs - 2 packs) = 1.23684210526.

    We can solve B then with $3 = 1.23684210526 * 2 + constant => $3 - 1.24 * 2 = 0.52

So, as an estimate (because I rounded significantly) of the cost of card packs: Cost = 1.24 * #Packs + .52

    The value of gold:

Using the equation above we can determine one card pack is worth 1.24 * 1 + .52 = $1.76 and this cost goes down (per pack) as you spend more money on them (at 40 packs the cost per pack is only $1.25). But it is actually impossible to buy packs @ this price as the minimum number of packs purchasable is 2 for $3. So it makes more logical sense to calculate our worst case scenarios using the $1.50/pack model ($3/2 packs).

Now we consider what our gold is worth in this scenario: $1.50 = 1 pack = 100g. So each piece of gold should be roughly equivalent to $0.015

If we compare the gold value to the cost of the arena, $2 for 150g, the gold value decreases to $.01333333.

Where this gets interesting is the Arena

The arena entry fee of $2 seems like a serious nuisance, but where is that money going?

For reference, and my source (http://www.hearthpwn.com/forums/hearthstone-general/the-arena/403-rewards-for-arena)

You receive, as an arena reward 1 Card pack + 4 other rewards (ranging from cards to gold to arcane dust).

Now in the worse case scenario, 0 wins 3 losses, you receive 1 card pack +  ~10-20 gold + ~ 5-15 arcane. My sample set is pretty small but I think that these sound about correct.

    We can calculate the value of dust, roughly, as a worst case pack = $1.50 for 4 common + 1 rare = 5 dust/common + 20 dust/rare = 40 dust for $1.50 = ~ $0.0375/dust.

    So what did you win, or lose, in the worst case scenario: $2 entry => $1.50 for the card pack + $.15 (10 gold * $.015 ) + $0.1875 (5 dust $0.0375/dust) *  = $1.8375. Yeesh!

It seems like in the very worst case scenario (not sure if it's plausible because when 10 gold was given more than 5 dust was given, and when 5 dust was given 20 gold was given, in source) that the $2.00 entry fee yielded less than $2.00 in rewards. But that's pretty fair because of the value of the best case scenario.

    A best case scenario: 200 gold, 150 arcane, 1 pack = $1.50 + $5.625 (150 * $.0375) + $3 (200g * $.015) = $10.125 worth of goods.

Now, bear in mind that these values, the cost of packs, the value of dust, and the value of gold, are hard to truly compute, as they are all on their own axes and scale dependent on their use. For example, the only way to get dust is disenchanting cards, so the value of dust in dollars is relative to the cost to get the dust, but then to make a card pack out of dust the values are cut in half. So although it may cost $5.625 to get 150 dust, 150 dust turned into cards is only worth cost of 4 commons crafted = 160 dust, 1 rare = 100 dust => 260 dust. But then again you got to choose what those 5 cards were, so it doesn't translate well in that regard.

Sorry if I was extremely hard to follow. I'm considering this a work in progress and would love the help and feedback of those interested.

posted a message on What's the plan of releasing more cards?

Speaking of WoW TCG, HearthStone Raids!

Just as WoW TCG released the Molten Core raid pack where one player used the dungeon deck, that would be a lot of fun to have a few raids where you and your friends could play against a powerful theme deck for either loot cards (I was so happy when I 'won' the Azuresong Mageblade for my WoW TCG deck).

Just thinking about it makes me so hopeful for the future of HS and the number of features and game modes they could add.

posted a message on Beta Club Thread!

I think the one thing they are 'testing' in this beta is how horribly they can make the *desired* player base beg for keys.

This is reminiscent to Outland questing, where it seemed every zone had at least one quest that required you to dig through animal poop. And we all did, for keys, and berries, and all other things just for that XP.

posted a message on What is BREAD, does it fit well with HearthStone's arena

Looking for some experienced draft players to explain the concept of BREAD to me when drafting.

I was watching, I think it was Noxious's stream, and when he was drafting someone was saying 'do BREAD,' meaning Bomb, Removal, andddd that's as far as it got.

Now I've seen some other articles out there (here's a good one http://www.hexrealms.com/content.php?163-Drafting-102-Learning-BREAD) but I wanted to get some feedback from HearthPwn members and know what their take is on how it applies to HearthStone.

What do you consider to be the best Bombs? Are there any cards you cannot pass up?

Is it best to build an amalgamation of decent cards or chase after quirkier builds? Any impressions?

posted a message on What are you playing while you wait for Hearthstone?

I played a little FFXIV, looks very polished and was pretty fun.

Play a lot of LoL, reinstalled D2:LOD because it's leaps and bounds more fun than D3, playing some WC3 campaigns.

For other CCGs I play Kingdom's CCG through Newgrounds, that can be pretty fun but I take long breaks from it.

Oh, and the game I play the most is get a HearthStone key..; it's a brutally hard RNG based game. I keep losing at it. One of these times when I open my email It'll be there. Still more fun than farming trash legendaries in d3.
