I really liked this week theme. It's hard to design a card with those restrictions. For example I wanted a card that gives you a weapon but Twig of the World Tree was a thing...
If the mana crystal goes to the owner of the minion, it seems fair. Otherwise it's a 3 mana removal that gives you a mana crystal, which would be seriously OP.
I really like a lot of those finalist. Good job everyone.
As you can imagine the Loa & Troll theme is one of my favorites so I'm really happy I could choose this theme for the custom cards competition before the release of the expansion.
My first idea was to submit two cards, one Loa and its Spirit, but generally competitions with more than one card to design are not that attractive because it's double the work. A lot of people don't want to commit that much time designing.
I get your point but this is something inevitable. A new HS expansion is always really interesting for the Custom Card Community because suddenly we have new tools for designing cards, like new mechanics (Overkill), new card cycles (like the Loa and the Spirits), even new flavor and offical card arts. All the HS custom card forums, like Hearthpwn, Hearthcards or r/customhearthstone, are flooded with new designs related to the upcoming expansion and always there are competitions about that new expansion.
Not doing this kind of competitions before the expansion release is like not talking and theorizing before an upcoming important sport competition. The community loves the preliminary content as much as the official game itself.
I chose this week theme and I'm really happy that we can create our own Loas (and Spirits) just before Rastakhan Rumble's spoiler week starts (I'm curious to see if someone guess a card).
Also it seems that destiny let me choose the competition theme before a Troll & Loa expansion when a year ago my custom expansion, Servitors of the Loa (with the same theme) won the first Hearthpwn Custom Expansion Contest.
