This is the Discussion Topic. The Submission Topic is here.

     Competition Theme: Three Card Monte

This weeks theme comes from nobravery, whose "Ner'zhul" was the winner of our "Stitched" competition.

    Competition-Specific Restrictions:

    • Your card must offer a chance to choose between 3 options. They can either be unique tokens (like Arch-Thief Rafaam) or selections from cards already in the game (like Curious Glimmerroot).
    • For this competition, your card may only produce three (3) unique tokens. This means cards like Kazakus are not allowed.
    • Note that these choices are not limited to cards! Sir Finley Mrrgglton is perfectly legal as well, as he gives three options.

     Competition Process

Preview Phase (Starts Now! Ends 20:00 UTC 4/May/2017)
During this Phase, the Discussion Topic is made available, previewing this week's competition theme.
Entry and Early Voting Phase (Starts 20:00 UTC 4/May/2017, Ends 20:00 UTC 8/May/2017)
During this Phase, the Submission Topic is made available for your submissions. You may also, of course, feel free to give early up-votes to any submissions that you like!
Voting Phase (Starts 20:00 UTC 8/May/2017, Ends 20:00 UTC 9/May/2017)
During this Phase, the Submission Topic will be locked, so no more entries may be submitted. Instead, use this time to browse the submissions and up-vote your favorites!
Final Phase (Starts 20:00 UTC 9/May/2017, Ends 20:00 UTC 10/May/2017)
During this Phase, the Discussion Topic will also be locked, and a new Poll Topic will go up. Discussion will be allowed to continue in the Poll Topic, and it will also include all the qualifying finalists and poll to decide the winner of the competition!

    Discussion Topic Rules

To make sure that everything runs smoothly, we need to reserve the Submission Topic for submissions only. Everything else goes here. What is everything else, you might ask?

    • Rules or Process. Do you have a question about the competition's process? Do you need clarification about one of the entry requirements? Are you not sure whether your entry adhered to the rules? Ask here!
    • Feedback or Ideas. Do you have some ideas you'd like to run by others before settling on one? Do you need help balancing or wording your entry? Do you need help finding art that will fit your card? Or do you just want feedback from the community on your entry? You're in the right place! Remember, although you are allowed to make minor tweaks to your entry after you've submitted it, you're only allowed one submission per week, so make sure that you've settled on your card for sure beforehand.
    • Discussion! Do you have thoughts on other people's entries? Are there directions you don't like that you're seeing too many people take? Or directions you'd like to see more people take? Would you like to help others and contribute to a greater community understanding of Hearthstone card design and balance? This is where you want to be!

All of that said, please refrain from the following:

    • Posting TONS of Ideas. Discussion topics become an absolute mess if everybody is posting a dozen different ideas. Please post not more than 3 distinct ideas at a time. Any more than that and we'll have to delete your post.
    • Advertising Your Entry. Please don't pop in here just to advertise your entry only to never be heard from again. This includes only asking short, generic, or insincere questions like "Thoughts?" or "Do you think this is interesting?". Yes, getting feedback on your entry is one of the purposes of this topic, but we're not just here for other people to help you. We're here for you all to help each other. 12 hours after this competition begins, there should be plenty of other posts here for you to give specific feedback or for you to comment on a trend. If you post your entry for feedback after this time and do not also offer some form of substantial commentary, critique, or praise of others' work, you may find your post deleted.
    • Plagiarism. Many people post their ideas here before finalizing them in the submission topic. Directly plagiarizing those ideas to post in the submission topic yourself is absolutely not acceptable.

What specifically counts as "cost reduction"? Just tell me a yes or a no for the following cards.

    Dragon Consort / Preparation

    Cloaked Huntress / Wilfred Fizzlebang

Naga Sea Witch (Possible cost reductions)

Maiden of the Lake? (It's not reducing a card, but a Hero Power. Which is kind of a card...)

Seadevil Stinger or Bloodbloom (Switching mana for health)

    Mana Bind

"Your card must simply reduce the cost of another card or cards permanently."
Dragon Consort is potentially a yes, as it does give a permanent reduction to a card, but maybe wait for further clarification
Preparation, Cloaked Huntress and Naga Sea Witch don't fit due to the permanent restriction, as they don't provide permanent reductions.
Seadevil Stinger, Bloodbloom and Cho'gall don't fit due to the cost restriction, as they don't reduce the cost, only the resource paid. I may be wrong here, but I doubt it.
Maiden of the Lake doesn't fit due to card restriction, Hero Power is not a card.
Wilfred Fizzlebang should, as cards drawn using the Hero Power are permanently reduced, and it fits all three restrictions. I would interpret the restriction as it must have the capability on permanently reducing the cost, not that it must be on a battlecry.
As for Mana Bind, I'm simply not sure. There is no restriction on it being a minion, and, with the exception of secret counters, it guarantees that it will permanently reduce the cost of a card. I'd argue that it counts, but I may well be corrected.
Other examples are Far Sight and Call Pet, which would be pass this weeks restrictions as far as I'm aware.

Alright, Prep is a no. Cloaked Huntress no (she needs to be alive). Wilfred yes (The cards drawn stay at 0). Shaveyou is right in that changing the cost is not reducing it, so cards like Cho'Gall aren't allowed. Mana Bind does reduce the cost of a card, so it's fair game. Naga Sea Witch needs to remain on the battlefield, so like sorcerers apprentice, she's not allowed.
Dragon Consort IS legal, because it's effect is permanent, the target just isn't decided when he's played.
Far Sight and Call Pet are both good examples as well, and Maiden of the Lake is not (That's not a card).

I'm calling it now, Arrow of Polymorph is going to win this week. Versatile, balanced, and most importantly, it melds mechanics unique to both classes effortlessly. Thief of Illusions and Ner'zhul are also good, and I'm sure most people will vote for them, but I personally really like the idea behind the Crystallized Treant. The idea of putting overload onto a card that gains you mana was excellent, and although I'm not sure that style of minion was the right way to execute it, it still gets my vote.

    This Week's Finalists

    Competition-Specific Restrictions:

    • This week you have to create a stitched card. Choose 2 classes and create a card that both classes can use.
    • You are allowed to use class-specific keywords if one or both classes have them. For example you can create a Shaman/Rogue card and it can have both Overload and Combo.
    • Your card can't be a Quest. I don't think this competition would be a lot of fun if every other card would be a dual-class Quest.
    • Your card must have a "Stitched" boarder.

We have whittled down ~204 valid entries to just 20 of the community's favorites.
Check out all the finalists below and vote in our poll (vote for as many or as few as you like) to help decide the winner and be sure to check back after the poll finishes for the announcement of the winner and the start of a new theme!

     The Fintastic Four

     Magic Incarnate

Fireball is an example, spell changes depending on what was lost.

     Daedorn Cinder Beard

Similar to Kazakus,Crafting a weapon with Deadorn would offer 3 choices to select from before adding the card to your hand.  You start off with a basic 1/1 Weapon...

    and make the following selections:

    Choice 1:  Cost

    Choice 2: Type

    Choice 3: Imbuement

I was originally worried about Malygos abuse, but I realized that without thaurisan you could only get off 1-2 of those petals, and that requires Preparation, one of these, Malygos, and a coin for 14 damage. In general, just a solid combo card that both druid and rogue will love, as rogue has Preperation and druid has Innervate and Moonfire.

Nice! I really liked Nurgling's Worgen class. It easily stood out from round 1 as something novel and fun.

Hey @Nurgling13, did you have any particular idea in mind for the Un'Goro "tribe" that Worgen would be associated with, that is: do they have Dinosaurs, Elementals, Plants, Tortollans or Murlocs?

My idea was they aren't really associated with any of those. The theme is the expedition, so they're bringing their own explorer-type people into Un'goro, mostly. Maybe befriending a few natives here and there.
Cool, none of the classes this expansion really cared about the explorers, the focus was mainly on the creatures within ungoro. It'll be neat to focus on those instead.

    This Week's Finalists

    Competition-Specific Restrictions:

    • This week, we want you to re-imagine an existing Hearthstone character. You may select a character that is already represented as either a collectible Legendary Minion, a token Legendary Minion produced by a collectible card, or a playable Hero. Note that we are excluding characters that already appear but only as entirely non-playable, such as Adventure bosses and their cards. Once you've selected your character, you can go about re-imagining them in one of two ways:

We have whittled down ~107 valid entries to just 12 of the community's favorites.

     Competition Theme: Character Development

This weeks theme comes from Asylum_Rhapsody whose "Cruel Pyromancer" was the winner of our "Elementary" competition.

    Competition-Specific Restrictions:

Journey to Un'Goro saw the return of two beloved characters, Elise Starseeker re-imagined as Elise the Trailblazer and Hemet Nesingwary re-imagined as Hemet, Jungle Hunter. They're hardly the first characters that Hearthstone has given multiple takes, and Whispers of the Old Gods alone gave us Deathwing, Dragonlord, Ragnaros, Lightlord, Hogger, Doom of Elwynn, Mukla, Tyrant of the Vale, and Nat, the Darkfisher. Indeed, Blackrock Mountain was Hearthstone's first attempt at reusing an existing Legendary character, when Majordomo Executus gave us a second way to play as Ragnaros! And, of course, Medivh, the Guardian is an alternate take on a Hero we already have.

    • This week, we want you to similarly re-imagine an existing Hearthstone character.
    • You may not select a character that Hearthstone has already re-imagined before. Ragnaros has gotten enough attention, and there are tons of other characters out there that could use more love.
    • Your card's effect must be substantially different from the card on which it is based. This is not a place for re-balancing agendas, no matter how overpowered or underpowered you think a card is.
    • To be clear, this is not a parody competition. Your card should represent an existing character, not a parody of an existing character.
    • This week is tough enough with the thematic restriction potentially making artwork somewhat of a challenge to procure, so there is no mechanical challenge beyond the above.

    General Competition Rules

These are the rules that remain consistent from competition to competition.

First, these are the rules about Posting:

    • You are allowed to submit only one entry. An entry normally consists of only one collectible card, plus any necessary additional material or commentary (explained below).
    • You are allowed to post in this Submission Topic only once, only to submit your one entry.
    • You may not delete ANY posts you make in this Submission Topic, not even accidental ones you may make over your one allowed, such as by double-posting or by accidentally posting something here that you meant for the Discussion Topic. If you do accidentally post more than once, inform any of the Fan Creation Forum moderators via PM, and we will handle it.
    • Speaking of the Discussion Topic, that is where any discussion of this competition should go. This thread is for submissions only. If you want to discuss your card or ask questions about the competition rules or process, you can find a link to the Discussion Topic at the top of this thread. Plenty of folks there will be happy to help you out.
    • Once you have submitted your one entry, you are allowed to make only minor changes to it. Minor changes are things like correcting typos or making balance changes that do not alter the spirit of your entry as determined by we the moderators. If you want to make any changes and have any doubts as to their legality, ask us first.

These are the rules about your Submission:

    • Accompanying the image of your card, you may offer some minimal additional commentary to explain its design, balance, and/or other qualities. Flavor text is also welcome.
    • You may not submit any Gold cards or animated cards. (It's just a cheap attention grab tactic that makes it unnecessarily difficult to determine what class your card is for.)
    • Your entry must be a card of your own creation. We've been doing this for a while, so if you blatantly rip off somebody else's idea, we will know.
    • Remember that, although HearthCards is awesome, you MUST host your card somewhere other than Hearthcards. Save it and upload it to ImgurPhotobucket, or some other similar site. HearthCards has a limited server space and will purge cards after a few days, and nobody wants your card disappearing part-way through the finals. We understand that there are some HearthCards memberships that will allow you to save your card there for longer (and you should totally get one of those just for general fan creation purposes, by the way), but we don't know who has those memberships and we can't tell from the URLs.
    • Fun and even humorous entries are perfectly allowed, but "troll" entries will be disqualified. If you're worried that your card may be misinterpreted as a troll card, contact a moderator before you submit.

TIP: Though not a rule exactly, we highly recommend that you insert your images using this icon on the bar above the post text editor: . Just click that button and put in the URL of your image. Cards that are uploaded and attached to your post are not disallowed, but in our experience they will not do nearly as well, so this is for your own benefit more than anything.

Finally, know that manipulating votes in any way is strictly forbidden. Any violators will receive an official warning, and will be banned from this and all future HearthPwn Card Design Competitions.

     Competition Process

Entry and Early Voting Phase (Starts Now! Ends 19:00 UTC 10/April/2017)
During this Phase, the Submission Topic is made available for your submissions. You may also, of course, feel free to give early up-votes to any submissions that you like!
Voting Phase (Starts 19:00 UTC 10/April/2017, Ends 19:00 UTC 11/April/2017)
During this Phase, the Submission Topic will be locked, so no more entries may be submitted. Instead, use this time to browse the submissions and up-vote your favorites!
Final Phase (Starts 20:00 UTC 11/April/2017, Ends 20:00 UTC 12/April/2017)
During this Phase, the Discussion Topic will also be locked, and a new Poll Topic will go up. Discussion will be allowed to continue in the Poll Topic, and it will also include all the qualifying finalists and poll to decide the winner of the competition!

How do we determine the qualifying finalists? First, we'll pull up-vote data from each submission using the formula detailed below:

    (ab) / (c) = x

    Where,
a = The total number of submissions on the same page as the submission.
b = The total number of up-votes that the submission received.
c = The total number of up-votes on the same page as the submission.
    x = The submission's final score.

The formula basically measures which cards stood out the most, with the necessary assumption that each page is about equal in overall submission quality. It will be the entries that receive the highest final scores that move on to the Final Phase.

The bottom line is that, although entries on the earlier pages of the Submission Topic are much more visible and thus receive many more up-votes than entries on later pages, you don't actually have to rush to get your entry in as soon as possible because the up-votes end up being weighted by what page your entry ends up on in order to determine its final score.

But wait, there's more! During each Weekly Card Design Competition, each Fan Creation Forum moderators will be given a Wild Card, which they can use to advance any one entry that they feel was initially overlooked or under-appreciated to the Final Phase, regardless of its final score. Wild Cards are our way of spicing things up a bit, but please don't ask to be given one or be upset if you aren't given one. These are just supposed to be fun.
(Also, it should go without saying that, while we moderators are allowed to participate in the competitions, we are not allowed to benefit from Wild Cards.)

     Rewards

Bragging rights are always awesome, but as usual, we do offer a couple of HearthPwn site rewards to competition winners:
Their card forever immortalized in our Winners' Gallery!
They will be allowed to select the next card design competition theme.
And a unique Avatar Border & "Card Design Champion" Title, as depicted below!

    Good Luck!

    • Your card must either be an Elemental, produce an Elemental or interact with Elementals in some way. You have the Elemental tribe represented somewhere on your card, you're good.

A smaller competition than we normally have, but I feel we were able to get some decent ideas. My personal favourites are Clever Girl and Manasaurus. I love the idea of playing against Clever Girl, and being terrified of some sylvanas effect, when the person only grabbed card draw. Manasarus is just very flavourful, taking the magical dinosaurs we saw in the trailer and strongly attaching it to druid.

Competition Theme: The Land Before Release

This weeks theme comes from AngryChicken and CheeseEatingSurrenderMonkey, whose "Helpful Whelp" and "Borrowed Time" were the tied winners of our "Scales of Justice" competition.

    Competition-Specific Restrictions:

    • What? You didn't think we'd forget about an upcoming expansion, did you? For this week, your card art must depict a Dinosaur. "Dinosaur" scientifically refers to a specific classification of prehistoric animals (You can find more info here), but we're willing to broaden the definition to accept other classic prehistoric animals like Pterosaurs, Plesiosaurs, Dimetrodons, and even Trilobites. However, we will not allow more recent animals to qualify, like Mammoths, Sabre-Tooth Cats, or Birds, nor will we allow modern animals that have simply been around since prehistoric times, like Sharks or Dragonflies.
    • Your card must also be a beast itself, interact with beasts, or produce a beast (token or card). If it produces a card that depicts a dinosaur, in accordance with the first restriction, it needn't necessarily depict one itself.
    • Existing examples include King KrushBloodfen Raptor, and Mounted Raptor.

During this Phase, the Submission Topic is made available for your submissions. You may also, of course, feel free to give early up-votes to any submissions that you like!
Voting Phase (Starts 19:00 UTC 20/March/2017, Ends 19:00 UTC 21/March/2017)
During this Phase, the Submission Topic will be locked, so no more entries may be submitted. Instead, use this time to browse the submissions and up-vote your favorites!
Final Phase (Starts 20:00 UTC 21/March/2017, Ends 20:00 UTC 22/March/2017)
During this Phase, the Discussion Topic will also be locked, and a new Poll Topic will go up. Discussion will be allowed to continue in the Poll Topic, and it will also include all the qualifying finalists and poll to decide the winner of the competition!

How do we determine the qualifying finalists? First, we'll pull up-vote data from each submission using the formula detailed below:

    (ab) / (c) = x

    Where,
a = The total number of submissions on the same page as the submission.
b = The total number of up-votes that the submission received.
c = The total number of up-votes on the same page as the submission.
    x = The submission's final score.

    Good Luck!

posted a message on Weekly Card Design Competition 5.11 - Discussion Topic

This is the Discussion Topic. The Submission Topic is here.

So, without further ado, have fun and get creating!
