I am not paying for the packs, but I am not complaining about it either. It is there as an option for competitive players who want to gain an advantage against casual players.
You are free to pay for it to get a headstart, or just play casually for free. But without these players buying packs, you cannot play for free.
F2P players need to learn that servers cost money to maintain and developers don't work for free.
You can continue to play the new game mode without paying anything, but without these packs for sale, the server won't even be running for these f2p players to play.
I think they're foolish not to consolidate the money spent on game modes honestly.
Who's going to spend money on multiple different game modes? They're just cannibalizing their own business that way.
Who said they expect you to? They are offering another option, that's all. If you get sick of Hearthstone (and who isn't, amirite?), here's this other game mode you can play while you take a break from all the Questlocks. If you look at it that way, it's actually nice that you don't have to leave your gold behind when you quit playing constructed.
I believe it will be normal for people to pick a favorite mode, and maybe have a second one that they poke their head into every once in a while. I'm pretty sure that's how it works with Battlegrounds right now. There are tons of people who play one or the other, not both.
If the Standard meta hasn't improved by the time the third expansion of the year comes out, there's no way I'm spending cash on that. But now Blizzard has a chance to get my money anyway. That's not cannibalization; it's insurance.
I think one of the main issues with Mercenary (beside the subjective one about appearance) is that is resource system to buy packs is shared with the main game.
The fact that the gold you earned can be used for both modes causes discontent as it subconsciously push player to split their attention and consequently in game earnings between modes, while acting like they are basically different games.
If the currencies were different for each mode, you'd still be splitting your attention and earning less of each. That's how time works.
If you don't want to spend your precious Hearthstone gold on Mercenaries, you don't have to. You can still play the game for free, but you'll have to do without things like Heroic mode. Just like in real life, you have to decide what's important enough to spend your pretend money on.
The main problem with mercenaries is that you need to spend gold to upgrade your town, thats the only way to get BASIC functions of the game mode. Even if I want to play it for free and not spend the hard-earned gold on mercenaries packs, I still need to pay for it with gold.
Usually Im optimistic about changes and new game modes, but I have some doubts about this one. We still dont know how many gold is needed to upgrade your town fully, but I guess it will be several hundred, maybe even several thousand. The town upgrades should either cost some mercenaries-only currency OR you should get them by doing some quests/achievements in my opinion.
You earn Rewards Track XP for playing Mercenaries. That translates to gold. It only makes sense that you would asked to spend some of that gold in Mercenaries. It's not like it will be a constant drain on your resources. You buy the buildings once, and that's it. You don't even have to upgrade them unless you enjoy Mercenaries enough to want to do that.
From Blizzard's perspective, gold is the only way f2p players are able to "pay" for the development of Mercenaries. I think it's completely fair and reasonable that they ask you to contribute to a new game mode if you want to play it.
Not knowing how much buildings are going to cost, I think it's very premature to complain about this now. Once you know the prices, THEN you can complain if you think they are too high.
same thing the blizzard defenders said before the release of the rewards track, we all know how that went.
And how exactly it went? I earn more gold than before the track. Oh, yes, they "upgraded it" by removing seasonal XP-granting events
you have a ridiculously selective memory. The current rewards track is the 3rd version after much of the community provided sustained criticism until Blizzard responded. So if you like it now you should be thanking me and those like me. If everyone was like you, then you would be stuck with the shitty first version.
Actually I defended the first version as well. The old system is just crap even if it gives more gold than the first version.
Because it only benefits one style of playing. Aggro. Win as fast as you can. 10 gold every 3 wins, farm newbies with meta decks in casual.
The first version is already better because it benefits all types of players.
Arena gets boosted since you get xp while playing, so you get extra rewards while the arena reward system itself remains unchanged.
Similarly, BG used to give totally 0 rewards, but now it gives xp, so you do earn gold from it, even though quite little.
Lastly, for ranked players, control players are better rewarded since it is no longer about how fast you win games.
Edit: And for newbies who have difficulties in winning, which is made harder by players farming them for easy wins. It feels bad when you played 10 games, lose 10 games and get nothing out of it. Now you still get xp for losing.
It is a fact that inside the mercs game mode you will get quests that will award you mercs packs, mercs coins and mercs cosmetics. If you want to progress in the game mode, this will be your main source of "income" outside of bounties which also give you mercs-specific resources. Since the game mode has its own quest system it seems reasonable that they dont want to mix it with the regular quests. If somebody is complaining about not being able to complete daily/weekly quests in mercs, the devs can always defend theirselves with the argument "but mercs has its own quest system"
But why then do they even bother with having this mode on the same reward track as regular Hearthstone? Why would they go for merc packs\upgrades for gold? Why not create a separate currency if this currency can't be gained inside the game? Why not make separate Mercenary coins? Why even do it in the same client? How do they expect brand new players to play it?
I fully expect that one can start a brand new account, complete the tutorial, never play a game of Hearthstone, go straight in Mercenaries and gradually earn all the necessary gold there. Every other model is absurd and nothing in the "gameplay trailer" indicates that it isn't true. Hell, they even try to lure the WoW crowd in by giving a mount. This WoW crowd may not have even opened Hearthstone account for years or ever. "...complete the Mercenary tutorial and start the first bounty to unlock the mount..." and then stop playing because you have no Hearthstone gold to unlock anything and you don't want to grind the game you have no interest in
Well, HS, BG and Merc are all in the same client although they are entirely different games with different combat styles, because they all leverage on the same fundamentals. Attack vs Health concept, and you get counter attacked when you attack. Similar keyword effects such as battle cry and deathrattle. Hence if you played HS, you can understand Merc and BG easier.
Cross games promotions are already available for a long time. Lady liadrin skin was given free if you have a level 20 wow account. You also get some card backs for pre purchase of starcraft expansions etc.
Aggro has minions that are getting more stats for lower cost. Shaman has 1 mana 1/3 that grows stronger and stronger and a 3 mana 2/5 windfury. DH has sticky minions that need multiple removals. Hunter has a 5/4 for 2 cost that will whack your face.
Then we have warlock with aoe that deals 2 damage for 3 mana, priest one that can only be used at rank 2 after 5 mana. And warrior with brawl for 5. Even token druids buff their minions to 3 health or more. What good aoe skills are you talking about?
Why do priests and warlocks still run hysteria after nerf? Because they don't have better options.
Keep it as a cool card with cool text and cool effect, but nobody plays it. Or change it to its current boring effect with boring text but every warlock plays it?
I rather have a core class legendary be playable since it is going to remain in standard for long. Or do you prefer cards like King krush which nobody plays.
When Priest is OP, people complain. When Priest is weak, people also complain. Regardless any meta, people always find ways to complain about the class.
And rightfully so, shit's boring as hell. And I don't even think the class is OP, in fact, after giving it a try a couple times I concluded that despite having some insane and indeed OP cards, the class is ultimately doomed to keep doing the same thing it has been since the game lauched. I have genuine pity for Priest players, so much so that I give every single one I encounter a free win, because I prefer lowering my rank than facing a Priest.
It wasn't so boring until Blizzard decided on its class identity crap.
It used to have northshire and circle of healing draw combo, so you can play fast combo decks like cthun.
It used to have direct damage spells, so you can play otk decks relying on valen and malygos.
It used to have divine spirit and inner fire which resulted in super big minions or even otk charge minions.
They removed all these then what else can priest play but control?
Playing standard. Priest by turn 4 has discovered about 4 cards, and gotten discount on whole hand twice (palm reading). Two palm readings, 2 renew, 2 draconic studies. Plays 6 cards and still has more cards then started with. Meanwhile in this time I've 3 minions and he's at full HP. Drops a nightmare amalgam then a spell to give it extra HP and attack for free (because cost reduction based on # of spells in hand) then somehow duplicates it next turn and there are two like 12/14 or some ******** stat nightmare amalgans. My board is zixor and 2 other random beasts.
I don't feel like looking up the other card names but this is ********. Only class that ends up with more cards in hand after playing cards. Discover is ******** and once pally and mage get nerfs priest is going to be even more cancer
So many things wrong that I don't know where to start.
Discover does not increase your hand size. You can use one card and get one card back. Hence there is no way a priest played those 6 cards and have more cards than started with.
Nightmare amalgam is not in standard. Circus one is.
If you left a minion on board untouched for a class which is famous for buffing minions, then it is entirely your fault. The priest is just doing what he is supposed to do.
Priest is pretty much the worst class right now and if it is broken or OP, then the rest are beyond broken.
I would love to see a card like black vise from MTG that punishes large hand sizes.
Well, mindrender is one of them. It is nice to swap with someone with a big hand, so you have a bigger variety of options. Plus, if opponent is mage, most cards are discounted and you can throw cheap fireballs in their face.
Cards like mukka which flood their hand with bananas or draw cards for opponents like the new Southsea Scoundred can also make them mill cards when timed well. I used Zephyr before to get Mukka sometimes.
In the cards section you can filter cards to show standard or classic only. Can a new filter be added for arena?
Everytime there is an arena rotation, it is quite frustrating to figure out what cards are available. Especially secrets, I find it hard to test what it is without knowing what's the available pool.
Frankly speaking, nothing wrong with Blizzard move.
Corporations all over the world, have been hiring idols, singers or actors to represent their brand for advertisements etc. So long as these models get into any scandal or lawsuit that may damage their brand, it doesn't matter whether the lawsuit is still ongoing or the scandal is proven true or not, they get sacked and sued for damages instead.
Which corporation will want to keep an accused abuser as their representive? Imagine McDonald's having an abuser selling their burgers. Will they spend money to shoot a new advertisement or leave it as it is while people boycott their burgers.
Keywords are meant to simplify wordings for effects which are repeatedly used for multiple cards. Hence, there is no reason to apply it in standard for recruit or inspire when there are only 2 each out of 1000 standard cards. However, when they move to wild, perhaps the wordings can be changed.
In fact, there are more repeated effects which should have keywords such as cannot be targeted by spells or hero power, start/end of turn effects.

So far I have never seen golden /diamond exclusive cards come back, including the golden ETC from beta.
Card backs have returned though so who knows.

It was trash only for aggro players. I am a constant arena player and I am happy to get additional freebies for playing the same thing.

@Benom_2207
Attacking and surviving = fought something and isn't dead. Who said must take damage?
By your explanation, it means attacking a 0 attack minion such as totem won't trigger too.
