posted a message on What do you think of the expansion so far?

The Frozen Throne cards so far have unfortunately been rather disappointing, either due to situational and conditional effects, or how "clunky" many of them are.

For example, many of Frozen Throne's new control-oriented cards need to meet some form of requirement. Though both are very powerful, Defile and Spreading Plague are reliant on a certain kind of board state that makes them almost useless in non-aggro matchups. One of the key reasons why aggro metas develop over control ones is that control cards are only good in certain matchups, while aggro cards are great no matter the matchup. Defile won't save you against a Control Priest or Ramp Druid due to their high-health minions, but that Arcanite Reaper is gonna do some damage, whether it be bashing in a Control Priest's face or removing a Ramp Druid's Druid of the Claw.

As far as clunckyness goes, compare the new Rogue DK to Jaraxxus. Both are 9 mana cards that transform your hero and basically make you waste a turn right when you play them, resulting in a tempo loss. However, the tempo loss is greater for the Rogue DK than for Jaraxxus, since gaining a 3/8 weapon versus gaining Stealth allows you to interact with the board in some manner- albeit in a rather limited way. Additionally, the Rogue DK is dependent on top decks, while Jaraxxus's INFERNO! will always give you a 6/6 Demon for 2. This results in the Rogue DK being a more "clunky" Jaraxxus, even though both are made to be late-game transformations with potentially infinite value due to the former's lack of board interaction and reliance on top deck rng.

Hopefully I'm wrong, and this expansion turns out to be great. My worry is that this may be the new Gadgetzan or Grand Tournament in that only a handful of cards will be playable.

posted a message on Which packs for new player(s)?

    Priority list for new players:

    1. Get the Welcome Bundle (Two legendaries guaranteed, 1 from the bundle and 1 from opening the first 10 packs of an expansion).

    2. Get Old Gods packs (Two legendaries guaranteed, 1 being C'thun and 1 from opening the first 10 packs of an expansion. Buy one at a time until you get a legendary, which is guaranteed in the first 10 packs).

    3. Wait until Frozen Throne Launch (Between now and Frozen Throne, just have her play around with what she has and get her feet wet in the gameplay mechanics. This will test if whether or not she even wants to continue investing in the game. Try training her against the Inkeeper in Practice Mode or use that free Arena ticket, for example).

    Things to avoid:

    1. Gadgetzan (Overall weak expansion, but If you'd like to get 10 packs for the legendary, go for it).

    2. Un'Goro (Many of the legendaries are Quests, and they all require a big card collection to make work. Plus, the Warrior and Mage Quests are the only ones with promise at the moment. Again, if you just want to get 10 packs, that's totally fine).

    Don't sweat next year's rotation. It's a whopping 9 months away.

P.S. Get boyfriend points by buying her Karazhan.

    :)
