posted a message on Game of Thrones is disappointing

Well, I rooted for this to happen. Mad Queen Dany is the best thing that happened this season, mainly because I don't think she is mad as in crazy, but mad as in upset or distraught. Ever since the Short Night, Jorah's death, she has become an actual person, feeling solitude and envy instead of being an immortal goddess that just gets armies for free. That's a character right there! Her lashing out wasn't from nothing, I'd say:

Tyrion has done nothing but fail her expensively ever since she got to Westeros, she has witnessed the deaths of two of her """"children"""" and two of her advisers before her own eyes, she has been betrayed and her lover's family hates her guts. Then you meet an insufferable opponent like Cersei and Euron... I find it understandable that she wants to destroy everything they ever held. She's not right to do so, but I get it.

The people complaining about Mad Queen Dany probably think seeing people you care about get murdered is easy. Reminder: she's had an easy journey ever since Season 2 started. Her only losses in Essos were Ser Barristan and Khal Drogo, both of which she avenged quite nastily. Season 7 was when she experienced hardship again, and now we see her deal with it.

    In short:
    All hail Queen Daenerys Stormborn!
    Queen of the Ashes,
    Breaker of Cities,
Burner of Eunuchs, Children and Mothers,
Crusher of the hard-nerfed Iron Fleet and Golden Company,
Mighty makes righty heir to the Iron Throne!

posted a message on For people who think Casual sucks...

The evolution of bullshit excuses on this topic is astonishing:

    1. We started with "testing Secret Paladin/Jade Druid/Odd Paladin/Pirate Warrior in casual before ranked" (Yes those decks take ages to learn)
    2. Then we got the "my top-tier deck is fun" bots. Funnily enough, many were vehemently against a goldless casual, but that must be a coinky-dink (and no, I don't think goldless casual is a good idea either, just pointing out the obvious hypocrisy)
    3. Then we got the "got a quest so I must play the S-tier deck in casual to complete it" (thank goodness, heaven forbid most quests were intentionally vague to let you play any deck anywhere)
    4. Later (and now still) we get "your deck can't be a homebrew because it runs some good cards" (seems legit)
    5. Now we're getting blatant attempts to convince us the word "Casual" means something it doesn't actually mean (I can't even)

I can't wait until, in 6 months, we'll get a new ridiculous, nonsensical excuse like: "All decks have already been invented by someone in the world, therefore all decks are netdecking one way or another"

This doesn't mean all arguments are bad though. The 2 that work are:

    1. You can play what you want in casual, and
    2. No one is entitled to a victory, especially in Hearthstone

Everything else is BS from people who are probably all too aware of their own lies.

posted a message on What games do you play other than Hearthstone?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Crusader Kings 2 (with all the DLC it's infinite replayability).

I've also gone back to Breath of the Wild and my opinion of it has never been higher.

I complete my dailies in War of Omens too and occasionally check Tropico 6 for dictatorial hijinks.

posted a message on Just relaxed, guys

I have an anti-Big Priest Mage deck that sucks against everything else. With it, I prowl either rank 10 or rank 5 to hunt the unworthy!

Problem is, the deck is so utterly ridiculous it sometimes wins even against a deck made solely around countering them, and then chilling becomes impossible :<

Still, kudos for creating a non-complaint thread. I wish Hearthpwn practiced what it preaches and gave this thread the attention it deserves instead of bumping nerf threads with complaints about their existence. God bless OP.

Seriously dude, there's a Thread rattling along here with some 300 replies. I get where your coming from but I don't need to see another Nerf Rogue Thread thanks.

Why give these threads attention? Every single post complaining about it bumps it and keeps it relevant. For all the complaints, Hearthpwn flocks to the nerf threads like moths to a flame.

Pic related: Two threads, one with "good vibes" and the other a "stale, repetitive" one. And yet, one has 10 times the views of the other.

Most people seem to be targeting the same cards. In order to increase my chances of winning this bingo, I'll suggest:

Darkest Hour - Now summons random demons instead of recruiting minions from your deck.

Eternal Servitude - Discover any minion that died this game and summon it / Add the minion to your hand instead of summoning it

Zilliax - No longer has magnetic

Delivery Drone - Only discovers neutral mechs

posted a message on What if the salt thread...was a bad idea

Sometimes the salt thread is a godsend. By itself, the thread is one of the most amazing features of Hearthpwn. So... no, I don't think it was a bad idea.

Of course, it is always very convenient to dismiss all criticism as salt, and I do believe the salt link to be the laziest reply possible in Hearthpwn, tied with the small indie company meme.

But think about it this way: posting the salt thread is no different from saying "OP is salty" and calling it a day. The argument does not get stronger just because there is a link attached to it. Usually you should either ignore it (because the person, quite literally, could not think of anything else to argue against you) or reply with about as much effort.

And this is coming from a person who despises the Salt Thread link as a shield from criticism.

I was going to edit this into my previous comment, but I'll put it in a new one, since the first comment was mostly positive and this is... not =P

Having had more time to reflect on Missandei's death scene... what the fuck was that?

Like okay, obviously she was going to die once we saw her captured, I've already seen people arguing about the show shunting off all its POC characters and misogyny and whatever, as a white dude I won't get involved.

Wait, really? I swear Social Justice gets dumber by the second. We have a "sanitized" medieval setting with female rulers all around, a genderless prophecy about saving the world (which ends up being done by a girl) and no stigma against Arya or Brienne having sex before their marriage and they'll complain about misogyny?

As for the minority characters dying, they probably have a bit more of a reason to complain. Not much, since dying in GOT is basically supposed to happen to anyone, but at least I can understand where they're coming from. But misogyny? It takes some serious mental gymnastics.

Better than the last one. Less anti-climatic, at least.

    I liked:

The Hound talking to Sansa. I always adored his relationship with her a lot more than with Arya. Arya brings out the angry man we already know, but he is a lot sweeter towards her.

Varys becoming Varys again. We've had this character doing basically nothing for so many seasons it's not even funny. Also, I still hope they didn't make his "I care about the realm" shtick the truth. Maybe there is still some underlying motive to his actions.

The showrunners finally made two things happen: I finally care about Dany's struggle and she is finally going nuts. I like how she is at a disadvantage from being away from the main continent for so long. She doesn't have friendships and complicity like other characters do, and Jorah's death did not help. I can relate to that, and for once I can legitimately see her as a person and not just a Mary Sue.

Jaime sucking at seduction is a nice touch. He probably only had his sister all his life, who he did not need to seduce all that much. Nice of the showrunners to keep that in mind.

Tyrion and Sansa's chat was... alright. Not too good, not bad. The same goes for the reunion of the Stark children.

     I did not like:

Rhaegal's death. I'd much rather have this happen with the Night King. It would really make me feel like there were stakes in the previous battle, and the hopes of the living would go down rather nicely. Also, Rhaegal counts as a main-ish character to me, so it would have effectively made the last episode one flaw lighter. Here, it felt too effortless. All that aerial battle with the NK could have just as easily killed off Rhaegal with a lot more intensity.

Arya's "That's not me" has reached a point where I can already see it coming miles and miles away, much like the "Stick 'em with the pointy end". It's not that I wanted her and Gendry to be a couple, but meh... it was just an eye-roll for me.

Cersei has already spared Tyrion from death at her hands twice. Tyrion. The man she despises for killing both her parents and the valonqar, who she thoroughly believes is prophesied to be her demise. Wasn't her main character trait being unable to think things through?

Bronn... Ugh... Why is this character still alive? He is supposed to be a selfish mercenary and instead he is in this limbo where he actually cares about the Lannister brothers and is disguising it with greed. If he dies to save Jaime or Tyrion, and mutters some sarcastic quip before croaking, I will go in a rage.

Also, Jaime broke his vow of celibacy. Again. So much for Ser Jaime Goldhand of the Kingsguard, I guess.

I'm also calling BS on Brienne being offended for being called a virgin by Tyrion. Are we forgetting the time we're in? How maidenhood is seen as a trait of virtue? Or how thick-skinned she had to learn to be through life? I can see Tyrion saying that, at least, but the reaction feels forced. If Jaime said it, though, I could see it hurting.

I'm also not sold on Euron being a menacing villain. He certainly kills characters, true enough, but it just doesn't feel intimidating. He feels like a nuisance to me. A character whose antics you have to suffer until someone kills him off.

Jon Snow is still a dull Mary Sue, always rambling about the same things. I really hope him on the Iron Throne is not the solution we are heading towards in this whole conflict.

posted a message on Nerfs are not the solution- Buffs are.

Nerfs open up design space and diversify the meta. Honestly, I am glad the HS community is starting to understand that they are a good thing and seeing them in a different light. A couple of years ago people went feral at the mention of nerfs because of how rarely they happened, which was obviously a terrible attitude.

Now buffs, on the other hand, they really are difficult to pull off. Let's do mock statistics:

    • 50% of Hearthstone's cards are unplayable (fillers, stat-piles, arena behemoths, Basic set, Year of the Raven, etc...)
    • 20% are bad (janky stuff, most epic cards, stuff that goes into homebrew decks)
    • 20% are good (class cards, most Classic legendaries, much of the Classic set, etc...)
    • 10% are OP (many auto-includes, Year of the Mammoth, etc...)

For a nerf, you just need to either hit or kill off something among the 10% (sometimes Blizzard misses for the sake of dust refunds, but that has been happening less these days) and you're golden. For a buff, you will need to go blindly into the bottom 70% and pick at random. Your chances of messing up are substantially larger.

Blizzard could, however, implement temporary buffs. Say, giving us a month during which Pint-Sized Summoner is a 2/3 instead of a 2/2 probably won't kill anyone. Giving Dust Devil an extra health point, though, might create problems. But in a month, those would be reverted anyway, which is a lot sooner than most balance problems are solved in HS. Of course, I should come clean and reveal that this is just another plot for getting an unnerfed Yogg-Saron, Hope's End back, even if just for a while. Forgive me.

posted a message on Game of Thrones is disappointing

I actually liked a few things about this episode.

Dothraki dying was kind of useful for Dany in the long run. Good luck importing hundreds of rapists into your realm and getting them to change their ways. There's a very easy joke I can make here about real life events, but for the sake of Hearthpwn, I won't.

I also liked the Night King's acting. Seriously, the actor just nails that merciless look. You can see it in his every move.

We actually got to see Daenerys and Arya Stark losing at something. It wasn't much, but for once seeing those smug characters afraid made me actually kind of root for them. I actually felt sorry for Dany when Drogon was under attack, and she's a character I despise.

I also liked seeing the Unsullied a bit afraid. It's impressive to see slaves bred to be utterly fearless still cracking at the sight of the Night King's army. Goes to show how terrifying it is.

Lyanna Mormont got to show us she is more than a little girl who talks shit by killing an undead giant. It's a pretty badass way to go IMO, and she redeemed herself for being annoying to my eyes.

Oh, and we got to see Arya using skills that she'd actually learn among the Faceless Men. Like sneaking and stealth in general. It wasn't very long, but that scene makes 1000 times more sense than any of her combat ones. I also liked how it was filmed, actually.

Jorah shielding Dany with his body was kind of cute. And Emilia Clarke managed to show a lot more emotion when he died than for Viserion.

Jon was hilariously useless in this fight. This wasn't supposed to be a good thing, but I just found it funny.

And there were three major things I disliked, especially in the second half of the episode.

First and foremost, I'll say it: no single "important" character died here. This was basically a dump for non-main characters to trick us into believing there were high stakes. Okay, two armies were primarily wiped out, but think about it, very few relevant characters died. Lyanna, Edd, Beric, Jorah and Melisandre had their importance severely lowered by now. The almost exception was Theon, whose story arc concluded upon his death and redemption. C'mon! Kill off a Stark or two? Tyrion? Brienne? Another dragon? I mean cared a lot about some of the characters that died, but you'd really pull at your audience's heartstrings if one of the fan-favorites got axed.

Now it's time to say what I dislike the most: the Lord of Light's role in this battle. Are you serious?! This is the most powerful divine entity in Westeros, perhaps the only one too. He brings people back from the dead, he imbues his priests and priestesses with incredible powers and he has shown multiple signs that he can see into the future (albeit trickily). And Azor Ahai's prophecy goes down the drain. No shining sword, neither Jon nor Beric (the two proteges of the Lord of Light) kill the NK and his incredibly powerful priestess does relatively little to stop the enemies in the dark. Heck, what was Beric's purpose?! You get resurrected multiple times to escort two people?! Why couldn't Beric kill the NK and maybe die afterwards? His touch is clearly dangerous, maybe that alone could kill someone and give them a much more graceful death. Even Jon would have been better, and he is bland as hell. Or Dany, she was also theorized about being Azor Ahai.

I suppose I've already given clues that I do not like how Arya was the one who killed the NK. Okay, it could have been worse. The knife hand switch has at least been foreshadowed before... But still, what the hell does Arya have to do with this? It felt... off. I don't know how I would write it if I had to make the NK reach Bran, but I wouldn't have had Arya kill him, for sure.

Still, I am... shockingly not that upset at this episode. I still think this season has been better than 5, 6 or 7 so far. It's probably because I didn't wince at the dialogue too much yet (let's not forget Dorne or season 7 meta-shipping), but it felt... alright!
