posted a message on What was the most effective expansion and/or adventure "gimmick"? And will Death knights work?

The one thing in common between all of these mechanics... is that nobody knew how they would pan out, or at least until a couple weeks after the expansion's release.

I think in general, people tend to be optimistic about them just because they spice things up and people want them to work.
At least a fair amount have worked.

I'll be honest, I completely forgot about it since it's late at night here.

EdSoSince TGT, every expansion has had a unique "gimmick" that tried to change things up. For instance, TGT had inspire.

    My person ratings:

TGT Inspire: was so bad. Barely any of the cards saw play. They seemed to be valued based on having the effect being used multiple times, which almost never happened since minions are removed so fast. Probably not surprising since it was their first really new mechanic.

WotOG C'thun: some people found it boring but it did work. Some C'thun decks were pretty competitive.

LoE discover: seems to be the most popular non-vanilla mechanic since they keep adding more with it. The randomness + actual decision making seems to be a good fit.

MSoG: we all know about Jades. People are certainly divided over it. Even taking out Jade Idol it still worked. Handbuffs were a pretty large disaster since they were uncontrollable. Though the paladin ones of buffing the entire hand may work at one point since it is consistent. Kabal stuff worked pretty well, though only the legendaries encouraged Highlander.

Karazhan portals: sort of a gimmick. Iron forge Portal saw some play, silvermoon useless. Forelands Portal amazing. Maelstrom Portal amazing too.

Un'goro quests, adapt and elementals: these seem like they worked out pretty balanced. Both are used in T1 decks. A couple quests worked but at least for me, I would've rather seen them be more powerful than they wound up being. Tempo and starting card loss I think is a large reason.

So will at least some of the Death Knights become meta defining? Same for the LIch King and Arfus cards?

Edit: I forgot a couple mechanics, added them.

posted a message on Why do people say this expansion is going to be so bad

I think the Death Knight "gimmick" is a lot more likely to be viable than the inspire mechanic was. They at least have a lot of tempo value unlike inspire which was designed under the assumption of minions surviving more than 1 turn which never happened.

Hmm? I guess if you don't play Rogue its bad, but for Rogue it at least has a pretty easy fit due to lack of 4 drops and defensive tools.

LIch King because the chance it is in actuality very good and part of the meta is very high.

they're being careful, they don't want to repeat kharazan, boosting the at the time strongest class of the game into even stronger territory, you know how it went: wotg's tier 1  Shamman digievolved into kharazan's  almost  tier 0 shamman.

And token druid is one of the strongest decks in the game right now, they want to give druid some toys to play with without completely breaking token druid.

also as someone else mentioned, redundancy is key in gameplay, what do you thn aggro has worked forever and control only works in some expansions?, blizzard keeps printing weapons and charge minions and refuses to keep printing AoE removal.

There were no aggro weapon or charge minions added in Un'goro

I think that DK its good because you gain a top hero power early and the game, but the battlecry its so poor, doesn't have enough impact on the board.

Except the hero power is arguably worse or barely better than Justicar's 2/2 hero power and that was never used. So it's hard to see how this one will be.

And the problem there is, Justicar was never played for Druid. So it's hard to imagine how the Druid Dk will be that good when it's arguably worse than Justicar. (For that matter, the bodies the Druid DK battlecry gives are worse than Justicar too depending on situation)
