posted a message on [CCC 7 Finalist] The Seer

I see a burning city, a people in distress. I hear a prayer in vain, one last call to the Light. I see a broken champion, corrupted in his flesh. I hear the countless voices echoing through the night.

The world is changing now, the future comes to me: visions, dreams and nightmares, whispers lost in the wind. I cannot wait again, I cannot hold or flee. I heard the call and I will fight with the might of my mind !

    Upgraded Hero Power

Nobundo is a Broken Draenei, a former Vindicator who lost his connection with the Light. After discovering the power of the elements, he became a Farseer and joined prophet Velen to guide the Draenei in their exodus to Azeroth. He joins Hearthstone as the Seer, a class that likes to slow things down and plan a few steps ahead of the opponent.

    Exclusive keyword

Omen is the Seer's exclusive keyword. It gives the class ways to predict future draws, which synergizes with the class's hero power and brings new ways to play the game.

    Showcase cards:

The Seer makes the most of its cards by drawing a lot and slowing games down. No need to rush things, the future will be here soon enough. But prophecy isn't an easy art. One must take their time to get a good look. This is why "end of turn" effects are core to this class's identity.

    Basic set

Fleeting Image was made for the week one challenge of making a basic card with Rush, Lifesteal or Poisonous.

    Flavor text

Blinding Vision - Asking a question is always a gamble. Sometimes you get the answer you want, sometimes you have to deal with the one you fear.

Channel - When I'm finished gathering all my power, you're going to be sorry.

    Truesight - I SEE YOU NOW !

Expanded Mind - It's big brain time !

Impending Doom - Fate is like a boomerang: just when you think you've gotten rid of it, it comes back to smack you in the face !

Stellar Protection - Watching the night sky is always a soothing experience.

Fleeting Image - You are your own worse enemy. But the enemy of your enemy (that would be you) is your friend, right ?

Sharp Eclipser - Whenever I see magic, I can't help it, I have to shoot something.

Peaceful Hermit - Slow down, take a deep breath.

Behold - Peering into the future isn't the hard part, it's coming back to the present after seeing so much.

The Seer is a control class at heart, with powerful tools to generate card advantage. The Mystic set also provides proactive cards to close control games and set up powerful combos. Omen is introduced in this set and the class has many ways of benefiting from the knowledge it provides. Murlocs are also a common occurrence as they are one of the races most in tune with prophetic forces. And of course, the Seer wouldn't be complete without the Secrets it knows about the past, present, and future.

    Mystic set

Weirdeye the Allseeing was made for the week two challenge of having a card that changes the hero power in some way, as well as the challenge of using an old keyword, but not in its keyword form (here Inspire).

Ner'zhul was made for the week three challenge of making a 7+ cost legendary minion if the one from the previous week cost 4-.

    Flavor text

Confusing Times - Wait, why did I come in here again ?

Curse of Knowledge - Morlucs usually have a hard time learning quantum physics.

Future Past - No more past, no more future, only the present remains.

Gift of the Naaru - Sometimes you have to get hurt before the Light notices you need help.

    Ominous Specter - Boo !

Cleansing Winds - Let the power of the elements ease your burden.

Novice Diviner - The first reading is free ! I'm actually a student still so I'm working for experience.

Prophecy - Once you know what's going to happen, you can nudge it just a little bit in the direction you want.

Weirdeye the All-Seeing - The thing with Murloc seers is that they have absolutely no concern for the boundaries of their powers.

Darklight Lurker - The depths will silence your magic.

Flash of Insight - It came to me in the middle of the night... Now I can't get back to sleep !

Lunar Sister - One was robed in silver's glow

Solar Sister - The other clad in golden flame

Alternate Reality - I like these cards, I'd just love to have more of them.

Spark of Life - Never gonna give you up.

Tol'vir Scryer - I see you and you will see me.

Angered Manes - People always wonder how much knowing the future can affect the present. Honestly, I think knowing the past is a lot more important.

Riptide Seer - Big wave goes wooosh !

Coven Witch - A coven is the only way to the most powerful sorcery: gossips.

Ner'zhul - I... have dreamed of you. I have had visions of death, and now you are here.

In Scholomance Academy, the Seer takes up the role of a teacher. Knowledge and wisdom, as well as the ability to control one's top deck card, empower the class to make the most out of the cards it already has and expand its horizons. Aggressive strategies become much more viable with the addition of low-cost minions. The Seer teams up with the Traveler, another finalist, with a set of unique control tools for both classes. Meanwhile, the Seer/Paladin combination is all about tempo and giving your little guys the courage to take on larger foes.

    Scholomance Academy

    Seer

    Seer/Paladin

    Seer/Traveler

Overprotective Sphere, Playground Bullies, Crash Course and Algalon the Observer were made for the week three challenge of designing four dual-class cards in cooperation with a fellow finalist (here MvonTzeskagrad with the Traveler).

    Flavor text

Mr. Bigglesworth - How did he get in here ?

Quiet Lecture - Shhhh ! I want to hear the pages turning.

Cryptic Studies - I know it's supposed to be secret wisdom, but did they really have to write it in Murloc ?

Detention! - Shame that we can only punish delinquents after they've harmed others. If only...

Educated Whelp - These financial lectures are starting to pay off !

Sudden Revelation - Nothing is quite as frustrating as reading a mind-shattering prophecy in a long-forgotten tome, only to find out that it has already been fulfilled.

Deep Researcher - It's not a "crazy conspiracy theory" if you can back it up with vague evidence !

Overprotection Sphere - Better safe than sorry.

Prepared Pupil - YOU ARE NOT PREP- oh wait actually you are extremely prepared !

Slow Learning - Doesn't matter that I don't understand it, I'll just write it down and reread it later.

Attention Split - They should put a disclaimer at the beginning of every magic textbook: DO NOT READ OUT LOUD WITH A WAND IN HAND !

Impatient Student - What they don't tell you about magic is that it take an excruciating amount of time to get a spell right.

Playground Bullies - Your horoscope says we're taking your lunch money.

Welcoming Classmate - Come in, I'll show you around.

Textbook Freak - I can't wait to get to the next page !

Coach Andrik - The thing about an even playing field is that it favors those who are best prepared.

Divination Major - Divination is so easy: you can just scry on all the tests ahead of time !

Crash Course - We don't have time for a full lecture, let me just show you what I mean by "Super Nova".

Algalon the Observer - Time travel cannot save you from the homework I am about to lay on you !

    Special thanks

To the moderators, especially McF4rtson, for making this competition possible. It is a tremendous amount of work and, given the state of both this forum and the Hearthstone community online, they could have easily saved themselves the trouble. Great work, on this occasion and many others before.

To my fellow competitors, finalists or not. Everyone did their best and, no matter who wins in the end, that's the real victory. A tip of my hat to MvonTzeskagrad for the work we did together, it's always a pleasure to cooperate with a fellow designer.

To all the amazing freelancers and independent artists who make and share beautiful artworks for Hearthstone. Designing cards is fun, but it always feels much better when you find an image that makes it look like the real thing.

To all the people who took time to review cards in the Discussion threads. One person can only go so far, especially when it comes to designing nearly 50 unique cards in the span of 4 weeks. Life sometimes got in the way of my own participation but it was good talk nonetheless.

To everyone who voted for my entries in previous weeks, for obvious reasons.

To everyone who took the time to read this whole post. I am really proud of this class and hope you like it too.

To this forum, for all the good times I spend here. For welcoming me, taking a look at my weird ideas, helping me improve every step of the way.

With all my heart, thank you all.

As my final statement, I want to say that I am truly happy to have come so far in this competition. The CCC was what drove me into this community of custom card design and I have enjoyed it for a very long time. I recently left Hearthstone and don't intend to come back, so it was good for me to have this project for a game I can no longer love and a hobby that I may not be able to pursue in the future. I don't have the foresight (see what I did there ?) to say if these will be my last Hearthstone cards or if I'll ever come back to the game, but it brings me pride and closure to have this. It gives me hope for what's to come, whatever it may be.

Thanks everyone for the feedback on my latest additions. The thing with Bigglesworth is that I don't what it to be a super powerful minion. He's a little cat !

With this set, I'm pushing more options for agressive Seer decks and Bigglesworth fits right in as a recursive small unit. He essentially turns your hero power into Paladin's for a few turns. Maybe that's not powerful enough so I'll consider getting him to 0 Mana.

IT IS DONE ! At long last, I've completed my set:

As well as a few changes:

    Rest of the set:

Regarding the set as a whole, I'm happy with both flavor and mechanics. I was able to squeeze in nice interactions. Some cards may be a little bit out of balance (Divination Major is strong while Welcoming Classmate is weak) but the flavor is on point and I don't think it's that bad. Thanks to everyone who took the time to give their opinion as they all helped shape the set into this final version.

After receiving high praise for my choice of artwork, I feel compelled to state that I do not own any of the art I use and tho I, unfortunately, can't give proper credit (never built the good habit of noting the artist), I am eternally grateful for the work of all the amazing people who made their creations available on Artstation, Pinterest or otherwise. As a fan creator, it's extremely empowering to have access to assets that look like they belong in Hearthstone.

We that, I'm gonna go sleep before I have to go through the trouble of choosing showcase cards and creating my final thread. Strength for the other finalists as they do the same.

@McF4rtson Summoned Security is cool, maybe a little strong has the best counter play is either the smallest minion possible, so the Demon stays on the board, or a bigger one which takes up more Mana. I would drop it to 4/3 so it can be countered by 2 Mana 3/2s which are a little more common. Sanitation Professional has a cool effect but maybe remove Poisonous to make it more straightforward. I really like this flavor of minions with Secret-like effects ! Wild Hunt Outsider I'm not sure about. Uncorrupt sounds interesting but also might be super irrelevant. The point of Corrupt is that the card gets better so reverting seems like a loss. And I'm not sure it's the best idea to give a Corrupt card Charge with Y'shaarj in the set.

Thanks everyone for your feedback ! I've reworked some cards, made new ones and confided with Mvon to get our common cards made. Her goes !

As some people pointed out, Omen didn't make much sense for Paladin and that Andrik didn't feel like a Seer card. I hope it's a better combination of the two classes.

This is the set of cards the Seer and the Traveler share. We are still workshopping the flavor but we're quite happy with the blend of mechanics.

A few new cards and a tweak to Divination Major's stats. I'm pushing the core identity of the Seer while having a tone of fun with the flavor of SA. I'm really glade that I chose this expansion !

    Other cards I didn't change:

Only 5 more cards to finish the set ! Right now I need some rest but why not getting feedback in the meantime ?

Hey everyone ! I've got a lot of ground to cover this time around so here is the first half. Mvon and I are working on our dual-class cards, I think we should have a first draft to show you soon.

Most of these have to do with the Paladin-Seer combination 'cause I was in that vibe but I'll try to round out the set with cards more typical for the Seer.

Okay, so I'm not sure I understand the challenge for Scholomance. Should we make only 4 dual-class cards instead of the 8 each class got in this expansion ? Can we choose which class we team up with ? Can we share the design of dual-class cards between the two contestants who chose this expansion ? Should we make one card of each rarity like official dual-class card sets or can we use the repartition we want ?

    Showcase cards

This second part of the set is meant to give the Seer proactive cards to close control games and set up powerful combos. I'm also exploring more Omen cards and new ways to benefit from the knowledge they provide. A few new Secrets and value cards round out the class's core identity.

Rest of the set (Part 2)

    Flavor text

Curse of Knowledge - Morlucs usually have a hard time learning quantum physics.

Future Past - No more past, no more future, only the present remains.

I'm not gonna lie, this vote is a little scary... I'm really happy that I got to come this far but every class here is excellent so I wouldn't be surprised if I don't make it. I hope I do tho ! Good luck to everyone !

Thanks everyone for your feedback ! I'm making a few changes to cards that seem out of line, whether the balance is off or the effect isn't interesting enough. I'm also changing the flavor of my legendary from one character to another that I think makes more sense for the class.

Small clarification on this card :

I should have stated it in my first post as this is a kinda weird mechanic. What this does is give you the option to select any number of cards in your hand that will be shuffled into your deck and replaced by other cards. Just like in the Mulligan phase at the start of every game. This mechanic would not count as drawing the cards. I felt it was better to put it in bold, kinda like Counterspell does but maybe that's not allowed ?

Wow I'm late... Let's not waste more time ! Second part of the Mystic set for the Seer :

When I made Queen Azshara, I thought Naga would fit into this set but I ended up not using them so maybe Ner'zul would make more sense in that spot...

    Quote from Ozymandias >>

@Klipce "Prince Tenris Mirkblood doesn't make much sense" You mean the wording? the effect is that i can use the health of enemy minions as the cost for my Sanguinate cards. I guess i could write more clear, like "You can use the enemy minions health as the cost for your Sanguinate cards".

Not the card is fine in a vacuum but as I said I think your design space is pretty narrow which means a card that depends on the keyword being on many cards to function is not really great.

I feel like your class serious need a win condition. You can draw your entire deck quickly, and then what? I don't see a solid win condition in your class as well as the Basic set. I would demote the Legendary minion to Epic and put the Legendary slot toward a win condition.

So value generation is usually enough of a win condition for control decks but don't worry I plan on making a more defined alternate win condition card in the future, I just think that this set isn't the right place for it.

Here are the three showcase cards I'm considering :

I'm fairly happy with these designs but my monkey brain is telling me that it's bad that they all are low cost... What do you think ?
