Many people don't care if their cards are animated. Opening golden cards gives us a ton of extra dust.

And many people like collecting. Win all around.
Why did the thread continue after this? xP

No, it's not my first card game, but considering this is a digital card game, things should be different.
Why? Yes, something like that does call for changes in the way you approach the game (which Hearthstone has in spades in other areas), but it doesn't mean every single thing should change. Why, specifically, should all cards be animated in a digital game? "Because they can" is not a reason.

@Sherman1986 From our perspective, sure. But from Blizzard's standpoint, having the gold cards only have animations makes them more money. So it's gonna stay this way.

    Yeah, sadly, that is true.
Making money is not sad. It is, incidentally, the only reason Hearthstone exists in the first place. o_0

It is to match people that have something you want and is of a higher skill level against you so you get destroyed in hopes it will make you think what they had made them so much better so you are more likely to buy it after which they use you against a lower skilled player to continue the cycle. For the record I do not think this is being used in hearthstone as the method is for systems where you can buy exact items.
They stated, in the patent text itself, that this is the only thing it is used for? Or are you assuming this? =P

    What. No.

It's a quality of life message for people who don't read the news. Yes they get a pretty sweet reward for it either way (to the point where starting a run is good value even if you don't play or win a single game) but some people might actually want to play out the run... or at least play it until 2 losses.

posted a message on Blizzard should bring back inspire

The inspire minions are some of my favorites, so I agree. The Grand Tournament was actually in general probably my favorite expansion in the game's history. It had a lot of interesting cards and ways of those cards bouncing off one another. Creative designs all around. Deckbuilding with my friends' TGT-heavy Wild collections has been a lot of fun.

posted a message on The Impact of Activision on the Future of Hearthstone
The reason you don't hear much backlash about it is because Hearthstone is, more or less, a pretty good game. People enjoy it and therefore will have a modicum of trust towards its developers. That might seem like blind trust but it's usually not: If a game is GOOD, it's because of good design. Good design and sinister business practices do not usually mesh well. =P
Also the patent was blatantly stated to not be in use in any games right now, so unless you think Activision is lying then we have complete confirmation that it is not in Hearthstone, so why would the Hearthstone community be talking about it? The only place I've seen it mentioned is conspiracy threads about matchmaking, where people were already super suspicious about Blizzard's conduct even prior to anyone bringing up this patent... and usually their evidence starts and ends at "I had a bunch of weird matchups after switching decks"... which is not evidence.
All this said -- and I will admit to not reading the patent in-depth so I might be off here -- as far as I understood the patent only suggests influencing matchmaking using micro-transactions, not how or why and to what end. Couldn't this, then, be equally used for making it so the people who spend tons of money on the game are also matched more against other people who've spent tons of money on it? The patent could be used equally to prevent pay to win matchmaking as cause it. Let's not assume bad intentions just because money's involved; let's face it when we complain about pay to win games we are also forming our opinions and desires on the basis of wanting (to keep) money.
    Quote from achan1058>>

    Here's my take:

If they really intend to use this patent, they would not patent it, but instead have it as trade secret. Reason being, now they just painted a big target on their back, since everyone will scrutinize them a lot more. Therefore, my conclusion is that they don't intend to use it, but would want to prevent others from doing so.

Patents are methods of control. Usually people control their own thing so they exclusively can make money off it, but plenty of things are patented just to control the market. You've definitely hit the nail on the head that if they intended to use this actively, they would not be advertising it because the entire gaming community at this time is pretty vehemently against "pay to win" models in the first place. Sales do not always reflect that fact, but Blizzard's exercised good design for so many years so they've frankly earned at least a little faith from their fans I figure.

posted a message on Are classes "Dead" to you after you get the golden hero?

I'm far off from getting all golden heroes, but in any game I tend to play every class or archetype off and on even if I gravitate towards some favorites. I can't ever imagine staying away from Warlock, Rogue or Warrior for very long as I love them. But everyone gets burnt out sometimes; you might need a break after grinding a ton of games.

So... these are my ideas for this week. I had another one but I think it's the weakest of the bunch so I'll scrap it for now:
I wanted to avoid simple "add this to your hand" effects as much as I could (although my other concept was that), and wanted to experiment. Originally both Sara and Bimble were more complex an had multiple interactions but obviously I ran out of room. Sara is meant to combo with Yogg (whom she almost reverts to pre-nerf Yogg) or similar cards and has no other purpose; she's most powerful if Yogg buffs her, but it's important to note that she doesn't TOTALLY protect your minions; outright destruction spells will still kill them (since Immune only prevents damage and targeting being done by your opponent). Bimble is a full-on mill card. Runs out of steam if you draw (and don't discard) your Gnomeferatus though. And yes he triggers on his own death. Smoke Bomb is like a Vanish/Sprint that is best used defensively since it gives you free Shadowsteps, though it has value on your enemy's board as well and is excellent for setting up or recurring your combos.

Alright, one new idea plus two of my best ones according to you guys! Your thoughts?

I like all of these. Doomedguard however can't work without a new drawback. I might suggest this: Have it CAST the Sacrificial Pact at the end of the turn, either on itself or perhaps a "random friendly demon", though the latter might be too strong. Basically ensure you sacrifice either itself or a demon on your board to come out.
Dragon Aspects is really cool, very much like Free From Amber except it allows all of these cards -- half of which aren't really played and thus might get bonus use out of something like this. Huge buff to Big Priest, though. =P It's still kind of gotta be a Priest card I think though, as its one of the few classes that just about all of these make sense on. As for Trick or Treat?... I'm trying to figure out how I feel about it. It inherently works on Druid, because of Druid's general versatility, but the flavor of it, though awesome, I just can't really picture in the game. I'm also not sure it would ever see play; it has no net effect unless your deck is build to be less hurt by the Cursed card or to better take advantage of the Wild Growth... and I'm not sure Druid needs another ramp tool. =P But it's probably the simplest, "cleanest" effect if that makes any sense. I feel like it could get as many votes as Dragon Aspects if not more. Hard to judge I guess.
Were it me I'd go with Dragon Aspects. It's nuts on Big Priest but then again maybe that deck needs a little more consistency. I just think it's the coolest card and really does some good for the cards it references. They all have merits though.

I'm talking about mechanic-wise...and Warlocks only have Curse of Rafaam. That's the only card they have that's called "Curse". :P
Also, it's Halloween-themed. Nothing about Rogue says that they should be about Plants yet Un'goro's Rogue set is full of Plant minions. Same with Paladins and Murlocs. So why can't Druids be about curses and trickery for this one night?
Additionally, Cursed Blade exists and Ancient Curse from Ancient Shade is a neutral card....
Is that enough to justify it?
Mechanic-wise, Curse of Rafaam is pretty important because it's the source of the Cursed! card referenced on your card, so it's a bit weird that Druid has it.
Also, I don't think Ancient Shade or Cursed Blade are good justifications. A curse makes sense in Priest because Shadowpriest is all into that kinda thing. Priest actually makes the most sense for a Trick or Treat card because they do both tricks (shadow) and treats (healing). Druid doesn't do tricks and Warlock doesn't do treats. Also, Cursed Blade isn't about cursing people. It's a cursed item Warrior chose to use. The Warrior didn't curse the blade. A Warlock probably did.
Edit: I don't know why I wrote that thinking Ancient Shade was a Priest card. I think I got it mixed up with Shifting Shade. Also, there's lots of Neutral cards that are thematically like a class card, but that doesn't mean that theme belongs to everyone. Like, it's perfectly normal for a Neutral card to be Paladin-y and have Divine Shield even though that's Paladin's thing. But if you gave a Druid card Divine Shield, that wouldn't make much sense.
And yet every class got an evil Death Knight for KFT instead of just Warlock, Rogue and maybe Warrior. =P Her point is actually pretty fair about the theme of the set being dominant here. That said as I said I still don't know if I could picture the card existing, as I'm not sure the outright Halloween flair would ever dominate a set in this game.
I think Druid is the only class it could actually work on, to be honest, since it's the jack-of-all-trades class that does a lot of different things and even has the Choose One cards. To be fair I think the Cursed! cards could easily have shown up in other classes, or similar effects, considering that it came from League of Explorers; the card doesn't really reference Warlocks cursing anyone; it references tomb curses, which could be a very Mage, Shaman, Priest, or yes, Druid thing; cursing sacred ground.

I updated the wordings to be consistent with other cards based on feedback. And I found new art for the librarian. What do you guys think? Especially about the new art, because it's hard to find good librarian art for some reason.

I know you are keen on the first two, but Doomslayer is quite amusing. If you'd prefer I ignore that one, I like Stormwind Librarian over Rogue Treat; I'm not really feeling Rogue Treat, outside of the tree->sap joke (although it's a fine joke).
I'm actually keen on all of them, but I doubt that most people would treat Doomslayer as a serious entry.
These are all ridiculously funny. I think Stormwind Librarian is likely to get the most attention between this artwork and flavor and its utility, and honestly I think some people will actually miss the "sap" joke on Rogue Treant unless the name made it more obvious somehow... because several people didn't get the Fiery Voraxx/Fiery War Axe pun when I mentioned that card some competitions back. The same people might miss the Silence pun but I think that one is less reliant on getting the pun to be a cool card.
I love Doomslayer and it's actually a plausible tech card if Exodia Mage or another stall/boardwipe deck got too out of hand considering that Skulking Geist exists. But I also tech to agree less people will take it seriously. Then again sometimes the fun cards get loads of attention.
I'd go with the Librarian due to its mix of fun, coolness, and raw usefulness though. It basically hits almost all the notes that both other cards do combined.

posted a message on Why no Coldlight Oracle in Razakus?
    Quote from D00Mster >>

Isn't it the case that if you draw Raza and DK early enough you're pretty much guaranteed to win with this deck? To put it another way, aren't most of the losses with this deck caused due to not getting to the key cards in time?

    Not really.
While it's true that drawing both of these basically put your opponent on the clock, it's not like with Exodia Mage where the game ends; it's more like it starts a timer. Realize that while Razakus Priests can use this combo to obliterate what you play on the board, they do this instead of hitting your face for win condition, and their combo is actually finite; they can shotgun you because they can keep playing cards, and they do tend to run out.
As others have said, Coldlight works in Exodia Mage because you can stall out anything your opponent can play in most cases. But Razakus Priest has to actually "spend" its more or less finite combo to do so. Yes, Coldlight could help to refresh your hand to combo more, but it's still inherently less value than Exodia Mage gets since it has to use cards to mitigate those its opponent draws, whereas Exodia Mage's methods of dealing with its enemies' board actually get MORE powerful the more stuff the enemy gets out.
    Just consider it this way:
    • Coldlight expands enemy's board and options.
    • Razakus combo spends cards to deal with enemy board instead of achieving win condition.
    • Exodia Mage deals with the entire enemy board in just one or two cards no matter how big their board is.

posted a message on Way to make Raza/DK priest less oppressive: nerf Raza the Chained
    Quote from zeedrome >>
    Quote from SmartLX >>

Not an aura, a permanent effect on the current hero power.  Just like Shattered Sun Cleric can permanently buff a minion which is then destroyed, Raza can permanently discount a hero power which is then replaced.  Permanency doesn't have to mean it lasts the whole game, only that it affects the target entity as long as that lasts.

Ok, but it doesn't make sense that Raza will just change the cost of the current hero power and not carry over to the next one.
His argument is that Raza should discount your CURRENT hero power, but that when your hero power is "replaced" (the usual wording for those effects), then it should be treated like when a minion "permanently" buffs a minion that dies; the original hero power is gone, so the discount should be too.
I don't happen to agree with him though. That's one way you could word such an effect, sure, but you don't need to and getting a permanent discount that lasts throughout power changes is also interesting. The notion of changing it is based on the idea that Razakus Priest is too strong or uninteractive to play against, but:
    1. Razakus Priest is NOT too strong; it is STRONG, but it's performing worse than other top decks just in terms of hard statistics.
    2. Like, watch Trump or any other skilled player play with or against the deck and you can see clear decision-making and interaction from both sides.

As for the bolded part.. you're exactly right and I have the same impression, but the simple fact is they're going to have to think about them if they want to be taken seriously when discussing the game. If you want to refuse to learn basic strategy in the game while playing it, that's your business, but if you want to discuss the game seriously or actually argue what kind of decks are good or bad, what changes should be made, and actively judge players based on the decks they play or build... people are going to call you out on your ignorance. =P (Not you specifically, obv, just, you know people who don't pay attention to this stuff.)
Indeed. My stance is always to only enter an argument or discussion if I'm actually certain of what I'm talking about, if I have enough experience and knowledge on the matter to discuss it. I wish most people did the same. I enjoy constructive discussion, as long as it is between people that know what they are talking about. When it comes to Hearthstone, it's so funny to see many players trying to discuss decks and strategies that they have no relevante experience with. Generally relying on the 10 or so games they played with or against a deck or strategy. (I don't consider myself with enough knowledge to comment on certain decks and their power if I'm not over 100 or more games with that deck, 50 at an absolute minimum... but somehow the 10 games most players have with the decks seem to be enough for them)...
It might annoy you then to discover that I am mostly doing the same. =P
But then one of my specialties is being quick on the uptake, so the amount of experience I need to understand something is not the same as most people's (not to be arrogant; there are other things I suck at that most other people don't). I also think it's fine to discuss things you don't necessarily have adequate experience with as long as you don't necessarily speak completely adamantly about it or are willing to concede points when you are clearly proven wrong.
But yeah I actually have never really fought an Exodia Mage more than like, once, maybe? I don't know why but it's just not a deck I run into. But I've seen the deck in action before in videos and I've seen the decklist so I understand the principles; my general knowledge of the game is enough, I think, to understand the myriad of ways to counteract its strategy.

posted a message on why does eternal servitude works this way?

This might sound annoying but honestly... why not?

Theoretically if a Discover card said Discover... something... that there was only one or two of in the entire game (like, Mega-Windfury or something), it would only give you those one or two Discover options. True Blizzard probably wouldn't print such a card, but the general purpose of Eternal Servitude is to give you a random effect... but one with choices. That's the intent of the card; pick one of three random minions that have died. The fact that you can technically Discover and only get one is an edge case, not really the main idea. True Big Priest is at least partially designed around using that edge case but that's a CCG for you. =P

The reason it's designed differently than Multi-Shot is simply... that it was designed that way. That's how they wanted it to work. I can understand the lack of symmetry between these cards' designs bothering some people, but really but just because they COULD work the same way (i.E. not work if there aren't enough applicable minions) doesn't mean they SHOULD.

I actually don't like it that I can't Multi-Shot a single minion by the way. Still bothers me to this day.

A veteran player should be able to make a new account, make a super cheap deck and hit 5 with very little issue if that was the main account you were playing on. A newer player has a lot more details over months to learn before they even had the chance to compete above rank 10 with a super cheap deck.
Thankfully this has been basically proven to be the case, which is why I think this thread is cool. =P

I was actually refering to the perfect draws in which a Hyper Aggro deck manages to complete the turn by turn 3 or 4, when you simply didn't play a SINGLE card, where you literally didn't do anything that game. This is what a SOLITAIRE game consists of. The Zoolock example is just a normal Aggro Vs Control match where you still managed to play cards, but were still crushed by a perfect draw. Even if it felt like you couldn't do anything, you still had interaction and influence on the game, you likely slowed down his progress in the game. That is not solitaire. The part of having a good balanced of costs, it's not the relevant point. Even with a well balanced cost deck, you will still be playing games where a Hyper Aggro deck manages to play Solitaire because you drew badly. It will happen. Solitaire games in Hearthstone happen, more often than they should, no matter how well optimized your deck is, it's just how it works in a game that relies on Tempo and that Snowballs tremendously.
Exodia Mage is a Control Combo deck, all Combo decks fall within the 3 Archetypes of Aggro, Midrange and Control, Exodia, just like Freeze, falls in the Control side. Something like Miracle for example, falls in the Midrange type. The rest is correct, but most players don't really think about it. Playing around cards, holding resources, knowing how to force opponent cards and such, that kind of stuff should be basic to most players, but it has become extremely obvious in my time playing the game, that most players don't bother thinking about any of these aspects of the game.
Fair enough, I'm just not sure I've ever played a game where I couldn't play a single card by turn 4. Maybe turn 3 though. xP

I don't follow your thinking; your decks in the OP require cards from certain sets, like the Un'goro cards in your Hunter list. C'Thun is a freebie obtained by buying a WotG pack with anything, even just gold, so I don't see why it wouldn't count. I would get not including the Death Knights (despite getting one of those for free as well in that Prologue) since that one's random, but buying any Whispers pack gives everyone C'Thun.
If your reasoning were, say, that then C'Thun would be in every deck, then very well, but if it's just because you have to get a certain set's pack then every deck here should be disqualified. =P
