    Yeah, I guess I'm asking what the actual intention or spirit of the challenge is. As it stands, a minion with the text "No cards with 'random' in their card text can be played." would qualify despite obviously not having any random effect. So I'm asking whether that's intended or whether that'd be breaking the spirit of the rule if the spirit is for there to actually be one random effect.

    I have a few questions about what kinds of effects would qualify this week, and they were mostly brought on by this card.

Or something that triggers when your opponent uses their hero power, it's not too difficult to imagine an effect causing the enemy hero to use their hero power during your turn. I imagine that we're good as long as no current effect exists that would screw up qualification, but I figured it'd be good to check whether the card needs to actually explicitly say "during your opponent's turn".

    But that's the reality. New players DO only have Basic Sets, and you have to make sure that those Basic Sets are going to be enough to support the class concept on their own, because people at one point DO have to play with just those and have fun doing so. The Basic Set phase has been the most complained-about phase of every CCC, but it's absolutely necessary. If a designer can't build an interesting, exciting, distinctive, competant Basic Set (and most people can't), then they need to revisit whether their class concept is actually a whole class concept on par with the existing class concepts or whether they just have one build concept or one mechanic concept that they're trying to build a whole class around.
    Bluntly, the Basic Set phase is a real early test of whether a class deserves to exist. Look back at past CCC winners and finalists. Most ARE able to forge consistant and intriguing class identities with just their Basic Sets.

    I don't have time to get into a lot of details, but there were a number of classes that, despite having perfectly competent hero powers and planned keywords, had basic sets that fell apart for me because they weren't functional on their own. By that I mean, their Basic Sets were clearly intended to support particular strategies, but those strategies don't have any viable payoff within the Basic Set alone. Like, they were built to preemptively support strategies that won't be viable until Classic Set. The Basic Set should be functional on its own. In the same vein, a lot of Basic Sets had all or nearly all of their cards clearly channeled in exactly one direction, and that gave the impression that the class was too one-dimensional.

    But yeah, I also have to admit there were a bunch of entries where their Hero Powers or Keywords were ones I think shouldn't have made it past the first round, so I didn't even bother to look at their basic sets. Mostly those were Hero Powers that depended on outside minion presence just to basically function and Keywords that were minion-limited, as I'm of the view class keywords, as those in the actual game, should be able to apply to all card types. There were a couple of exceptions here and there, like keywords that represented entirely unique card types.

    I went for Deceptively Simple and My One and Only, mostly because they're both huge pet peeves of mine when people don't make their Basic set appropriately BASIC and when they include way too many minions like they haven't even glanced at what the existing classes' card proportions look like.

    Finally done upvoting! I gotta say, I ended up voting for a lot more classes than I thought I would. I thought I would be jaded by now from the other competitions, but nope, I still see a lot of entries with potential! Not gonna lie, though, I pretty much immediately dismissed MOST (though not all) Hero Powers that required a minion target or Keywords that were minion-only. But either way, definitely gonna check back on this to see how it progresses. Good luck, folks! =D

    posted a message on Expansion Creation Competition- [Phase I Discussion]

    Excited to see this coming to fruition! =D
    I knew this was coming, but it was only in the earliest stages of discussion when I left. I think it was a really great way to go to limit the number of cards in the expansion, and I think that'll make it a lot more manageable. I haven't decided yet whether I'll enter, maybe if I think of something really good both mechanically and thematically, but I look forward to seeing the other entries regardless!

    One thing that I think everybody should take note of when deciding on their four initial showcase cards, though:
    Pay attention to how expansions have been revealed in the past.

    Make sure that your choices of cards are both mechanically and thematically representative of your whole expansion, and I'd strongly recommend doing what TGT and WotOG did and have a "mascot legendary" up front. TGT had Justicar Trueheart, and WotOG had C'Thun. And, just like those, I don't think you should be too afraid of making your mascot "wacky". If it produces a ton of tokens or is super involved in the expansion's other themes, that's great! It's intriguing. As long as you don't go too crazy with that later on when you need to be designing simpler stuff.

    I'd also say no more than two of your showcased initial cards should be class cards. With four cards you want to inspire ideas for all of the classes immediately. That's why expansion reveals in the past have almost always started off by showcasing mostly neutral cards. That's also why the "mascots" mentioned above were neutral. With no neutral cards or even only one, you're giving more of an idea of what to expect from the classes than from the expansion themes as a whole.

    Speaking of which, don't get into new class mechanics yet. Save your new class mechanics for later. Right now should, again, be about the expansion as a whole. Like, for Un'Goro, Razorpetal Lasher would be something to showcase later because the Razorpetal mechanic is Rogue-exclusive, but if you want to showcase a class card then Envenom Weapon might be a way to show off the "new" Poisonous keyword that everybody will have access to in some way or another. I believe Verdant Longneck was the first class card we saw, and it was a perfect example of a class card showing off a more widely available concept; I definitely wouldn't show off Tortollan Forager early, and they didn't.
