Do I have a rough skin when criminal offense? What do you even mean? Online racism is a crime in the Netherlands. As for Wilders: he is still being prosecuted, but his statements in question are just more subtle and harder to judge than the blatant racism on Twitch chat. We'll see where it ends. And it's not really all that hard to not say racist things, sorry if you have to think about other people for once.

I have a feeling this thread has derailed somewhat from the OP, sorry mods for my part in this. I'll leave it here.

I guess you're just trolling by presenting another straw-man argument, but I'll take your bait. I never equated the two like you're trying to have me do, my example was meant to show that actions have consequences and meaning regardless of proclaimed beliefs.

Oops, that was directed towards Pear, of course. Hebbe, I agree that you can be racist without ever saying or doing anything, purely based on your beliefs. However (and here's where we disagree) in my opinion you're also a racist if you make racist comments and accept that these have negative consequences for the people you're talking about. You can't undo that by making non-racist comments or saying that you believe something else in your heart of hearts. But I guess we're starting to repeat ourselves so we'll have to agree to disagree on this. Schrödinger's cat was merely meant as a small joke.

In the case of twitch chat, I guarantee that the vast majority that are being racist do it solely for amusement and nothing else.

If I steal your stuff solely to troll you for my amusement and then claim that in reality I actually believe in individual property rights, I'd like to think I'm still a thief.

By your definition I'm both a racist and an anti-racist if I would express both racist and anti-racist opinions.

    That's a nice straw-man, but no. You can't be Schrödinger's cat, sorry.

I have to also wonder just how many bullies there would actually be if people didn't receive the desired response from their bullying?

I think getting punished by the teacher and your parents would also qualify as an undesired response. But that means the victims have to speak up, repeatedly, until the bullies either understand why it's wrong what their doing or are simply too afraid of the consequences to do it anymore.

Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean you get to redefine words to your liking.

I'm not redefining words to my liking, I'm arguing that your actions betray your beliefs. You can't do one thing and say you believe another.

You'll grow a stronger society rather than weak minded people looking for defense because someone is a meanie.

In my book people who are taking action and speaking up against their oppression aren't "weak minded" at all. For now, sure, it is inevitable that they also grow a thick skin. However, in the long run it's unacceptable to let the abuse continue. I seriously don't see how a society of bullies and people who quietly endure bullying could be considered a strong society.

No, that's not how it works. You can "spew racist slurs" without being a racist, in the same way you could shout communist slogans without being a communist. If you don't actually believe what you're saying, you're neither a racist nor a communist. A douchebag? Sure, but not a racist.

That's exactly how it works. If your shouting of communist slogans actively contributes to the establishment of a communist state, and you are fine with that, how are you not a communist? Because that's what happens when you're spewing racist slurs: you're actively contributing to the oppression of certain groups. As long as you're fine with that, you're a racist.

Not sure how it is elsewhere, but in Dutch criminal law it's called "conditional intent" and it'll get you convicted despite claiming that you didn't actually believe the things you were shouting.

I'd be willing to bet that these people aren't even racist.

Wait, what? That's like saying: "Yeah they might've taken your things, but they're not thieves." No. Spewing racist slurs makes you a racist. Even if you only spew them to troll and get reactions, because you're obviously fine with the fact that they also have negative consequences for the groups you're targeting.

Mind boggling how people seem to think racism and sexism "aren't actively harming" anyone.

As for the "go, call the police" bait, I could link you some actual cases and rulings, but your eloquent and open form of participating in this discussion makes me think I won't be able to convince you anyway.

In some countries, like mine, racism and discrimination - even online - are definitely a criminal offense. If you don't believe me, look up articles 137c and further of the Dutch penal code. You can try to play it down by laughing about it and calling me a drama queen all you want, but that doesn't make it right.

[edit] Actually, since you're unlikely to look it up yourself, here it is:

    1. Any person who in public, either verbally or in writing or through images, intentionally makes an insulting statement about a group of persons because of their race, religion or beliefs, their hetero- or homosexual orientation or their physical, mental or intellectual disability, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment not exceeding one year or a fine of the third category.

On topic: I would be in favor of actively banning all participants who spew racist and sexist slurs, instead of closing the channel to everyone. And yes, I realize that would probably get most of the channel banned.
