As of 3.9.20, Shaman as a class is going nowhere. The DoD meta brought about one of perhaps the strongest decks on ladder in the history of Hearthstone with Galakrond Shaman, which brought about some of the strongest nerfs as well. The result is a class that has zero competitive decks on ladder in any tier.
In Blizzard's attempt to subdue the class, they effectively obliterated it.
Shaman is one of my favorite classes in Hearthstone, and looking through the synergies... the minions... the spells... I just can't believe that someone hasn't been able to cobble together a competitive deck that at least floats around Tier 2. It's an amazing class with access to some insane things!
I feel like, somewhere out there, is an undiscovered "unicorn" deck for this class, and I want to find it.
Contenders thus far are Funki Monki's highlander Shaman and Dekkster's aggro Shaman, but both, while fun, miss the mark at being seriously competitive. Using the highlander version, I've won a few lucky games here and there at rank 5, but once hitting rank 4 it became clear that it can't be utilized for serious leveling.
So... here we are, fellow Shaman players. Do you have any ideas for standard ladder Shaman these days? I feel like our only chance is control, but with Hagatha the Witch and Shudderwock rotating soon, any success here would be short lived.
I've had some interesting games played with an aggro version as well and the issue is mainly that it just has too many counters. Not that there couldn't be a unicorn deck but I think it has to be very tuned to the meta.
I believe a Highlander build would be the closest thing to a unicorn we could get. Perhaps not exactly like Funki's build, but something along the lines. It has the highest chances of scamming people with power plays, which is what the top meta decks do.
And, I had a really good run with it from rank 8-5
In all honesty, the nerfs didn't close to obliterate even the regular Galakrond deck... You can still double battlecry for 4x 8/8 with rush, and you can still Electra Stormsurge into Dragon's Pack for 4 x 5/6 with taunt... (Anyone know if you can double that and get 6?)...
I've been dabbling in improving Funki's Highlander version, but I just can't find one that can consistently beat any type of hunter aggro.
Currently at rank 4 with 3 stars, and I don't want to risk losing any ground with experimental Shaman builds on ladder. I went 2-1 this morning with the "play three games of shaman" quest in casual, with my loss coming from a Dragon Hunter.

Can anyone catch the unicorn?

Yeah, I was playing with a deck similar to this one: https://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/1332012-best-highlander-shaman-72-wr

I think the Hagatha build is stronger though.
