— Is there a card in particular that you consider overpowered at the moment and that would require to be balanced?
— This is a really good question, because I actually wanted to make an article about this subject. There are several cards I find overpowered but the most broken card is probably Dr. Boom, because he can fit into every deck.
Even in a world of Secret Paladins, good players understand the true problem is still Dr. Boom. Fix Dr. Boom and Paladin loses a lot. Fix the next two biggest problem cards in the game, Piloted Shredder and Knife Juggler, and Paladin completely falls off.
I was part of the design team of a small RPG online game once. We had many things to consider, but we had a very simple overaching creed: "Don't add less than you replace".
Mysterious challenger has added little, but made a lot go.
Actually Mysterious Challenger doesn't really step on anyone's toes. It really does add more than it takes away. Secrets were essentially 6 useless cards in the Paladin lineup until Mysterious Challenger came along. And it is quite a specific card for a specific deck, it is certainly not an "include in every deck" card like Tirion or Minibot. And what cards did it replace? Not really any.
However your design principles are sound. And you know which two cards go against that harder than any in the game? Dr. Boom and Piloted Shredder. These two have certainly added less than they replaced. Heck these two cards alone step on the toes of every other 4 drop and 7+ mana card in the game.
EDIT: And WTH HearthPwn, stop indenting the first paragraph. This is a forum, not a research paper. Atleast be consistent and indent them all or none. Not this forced, letter style, Dear Grandma, opening paragraph.
And to the "they just need to make more 7 drops, or make more cards that compete with Dr. Boom" crowd.
You will find that the only cards that compete with Dr. Boom and are on a similar power level, are cards that people realize are rediculously overpowered and would never be printed.
Definitely a bit too strong. However I love their WoW related Battlecries :D
If it is strong enough to compete with Dr. Boom, well then we just have two Dr. Boom's in every deck. So it can be strong enough to be played alongside Dr. Boom or weak enough to not see play. The idea that a similarly powerful 7 drop would contest Dr. Boom is just false, they would simply be played together.
You shouldn't complain but use this to your advantage! If you know that the meta is very paladin heavy then tech/build a deck to counter it. I do this all the time and it DOES work. Before someone replies to me saying "Wrong, Secret Paladin has no counter.." let me tell you that it does! Every deck has a counter (except for maybe old patron). Right now there are a few really good decks against Secret Paladin. For example, face hunter often beats it. This (last) season I used a tech'd control priest deck that had a 80% winrate vs Secret Paladins. Sometimes, when you think things are bad, they are in actual fact good. You just need to stop thinking about the bad.
That is fine when you have access to lots of decks. On the other hand if you are playing free to play accounts or you are a new player trying to build up one single deck, it leaves you very vulnerable to that deck if it counters you.
New players starting now are going to assume this Paladinstone and that is the only class they should play. As a result we are only going to see a greater influx of this shit populating the ladders. Only way to stop it is to nerf a card or two and bring this class back in line.
And this is why they need to nerf Piloted Shredder and Dr. Boom. Before these two arrived, you could easily achive Rank 5 with any deck as long as you were a decent player. Even Basic decks could get you a good rank.
It's not that Dr. Boom can't be dealt with, it's that if you don't have the precise answer on the turn he's played, you lose the game on the spot.
If you have him you win a % of games just based on playing him, and you won't win that free Dr. Boom % if you don't play him.
And that difference has made Basic decks fall from Rank 5 to 15.
And Trump F2P account take 3+ months to get legend, and be nearly a constructed netdeck before he could get Legend. Before Dr. Boom and Piloted Shredder, he could get Legend with any class, only Basic cards, in a couple of days. Skill was so dominate at the time, and it was wonderful.
After Dr. Boom and Piloted Shredder, the most important thing is having the best 30 card netdeck. Don't know how to play? Zero skill? Doesn't matter as long as you buy the best cards. Don't have a few of those cards? Drop 10 ranks.
Big Game Hunter doesn't have the fun in his sights, Dr. Boom does. Without Dr. Boom, BGH would drop off the map, and so many other cards would see play. Jhonny decks would be somewhat viable again.
The Casual mode that is no longer casual is because Jhonny no longer can play this game. Timmy and Spike are only contenders.
They have completely alienated ~1/3 of their audience by not balancing these cards. And made the game horrible for new players.
So, what would you all do if Dr. Boom DID get nerfed? What would you put in the 7 slot? Other than a few CLASS SPECIFIC cards there are NO good 7 drops. So what would you do? War Golem? No. A class specific? If you're lucky to have one. Just not play a 7 drop? That'll ruin your tempo.
DR. BOOM IS A NECESSARY EVIL!
If he didn't exist something else would. There has to be a solid 7 drop and atleast with this one you can only run 1 copy. What if there was a good 7 drop epic? Would you complain more because now you have to deal with 2 solid 7 drops? How about we just all stop crying nerf and learn to accept that Dr. Boom is here to stay. Oh, and btw, everyone can craft it so its not like its unfair... Why not cry about class specific legendaries, atleast then you would have something to argue about.
There are good 7 mana cards out there. Just nothing as good a Dr. Boom. But if he was nerfed, all the rest would be better, and some would get play.
As for tempo being ruined if you can't find a good 7 mana card.
Well boooo fucking hoooo. Tempo dominates the game, and Boom and is part of the reason. Tempo takes a small hit and allows control back in? Seems like a double win to me.
Reynad mentions, without set restrictions, every expansion, decks will get more efficient and therefore faster, aka more tempo. It is true and Boom is a major culprit of the runaway speed that this game is experiencing. Boom doesn't exist, and tempo might have to play a 5 + hero power on turn 7, or even just a reasonably powered, non-OP, 7 drop would be great, slow the game down.
Really it's what every one is wanting even if some don't know it. Blizz even acknowledged that speed is out of hand and everyone is hating on it lately and they "want to get rid of it with TGT." Or so they say. They need to nerf Dr. Boom and Piloted Shredder to show they are even competent and on the right track though. Seems like they just don't understand what needs to be done, to get the results they so desire.
Boom has an inmediate effect so you can't counter 100% with 1 card. You talk about the Boom bots like they were 8 sniped damage everytime. Yeah if the freakinf boom bots get lucky it hurts but Ragnaros killing your Alex or Ysera drawing the dragon or Ysera awakens is far more dangerous and 'valuable' than Dr. Boom.
Drawing the Dragons is not better than Boom, far from it. You can't play them before Boom, cause they cost more. Even played after is terrible cause at that point, Boom and his boots are on board and will destroy your higher costing Dragon and still have a board left over, and a full late game turn of mana.
Heck even compare it to Tirion, the once strongest class Legendary in the game. Boom still wins by a mile.
Aren't class cards supposed to be stronger than neutrals? And Paladin is the minion class, presumably they should be able to compare right? Not even close.
Look at Eadric the Pure compared to Dr. Boom. Is it a joke? When I saw Eadric I thought for sure it was a sign Dr. Boom would be nerfed, how can you release a Class Legendary of the same cost, and have it be that much weaker than Dr. Boom.
Even Tirion Fordring gets wrecked by Dr. Boom, and Tirion costs 1 mana more. Can't play him after Dr. Boom, his Boom Bots alone will eat up Tirion and still leave a 7/7 on the field. And you can't play Tirion before since he costs more. The only way Tirion wins is if they don't draw Dr. Boom. Pretty crazy that the once strongest class Legendary, is now easily handled by a neutral that casts 1 less.
EDIT: Editing to correct spelling removes upvotes, learn something new everyday. Pretty dumb concept though. Some people agree and upvote, but change <1% of the post and upvotes removed, seems like there should be a better way.
Funny thing is, they say they don't want nerfs cause it's not "fun" for people, but one of the things people are most dissappointed with is not seeing nerfs. Things that need nerfs and don't get them are less "fun" than leaving them broken. Fix it already.
Pretty much everyone that plays this game at a high level agrees that Dr. Boom, Piloted Shredder and atleast one part of Patron Warrior, probably Frothing Berserker or Warsong Commander, need nerfs. Just do it already. Many streamers even had these 3 on a list of probable / needed nerfs for this expansion.
These cards create more frustration than fun. Everyone knows these cards need nerfs. Not nerfing them makes Blizzard look like they have no clue how to balance the game. Just fix 'em already.
Flame Leviathan isn't that bad. Kripp did a video on it. And while that doesn't mean it's right, I said the same things before, in the right deck, it makes sense. It is made for a spell heavy deck, that doesn't use that many small minions. The "Draw-cry" is great against aggro and if you have the right deck it should hurt their board more than yours.
The main problem is that there is 0 reason to play Flame Leviathan when Boom exists.
Kripp did another GvG Legendary video recently, this time Gallywix. And he has actually done a video on almost all the GvG class Legendary cards at this point. All of which are considered sub-par(aside from Mal'Ganis), with Kripp pointing out that they can be good, they just need a deck built around them.
Hmmmmm, wonder what is one of the main reasons preventing people from building decks around these cards? Lets check the cost, oh right, four of them cost 7 mana. Well there's 1 reason why four of them are never played: Boom.
Two more are 5 cost and two are 6 cost, but even these are similar to the 7 cost ones in that they provide unique powerful effects, but require a deck built to support their effect.
These class GvG Legendary cards are powerful, yet situational, strong, yet not OP, about the power level that Boom should have (actually Boom should be weaker as everyone knows that class cards are supposed to be stronger than neutrals).
People play Boom in decks that would have never played a 7 before. It's not about the 7 spot, its about being unconditionally better than every other card.
Some more than others but if Boom wasnt here, I know of atleast 9 cards that would be guaranteed to see more play:
Boom being gone wouldn't change the amount that these cards are played.
Troggzor is one of the cards that sounds good but really isn't. Troggzor isn't just outclassed by Dr. Boom, it's realistically outclassed by the 6 mana legendaries as well.
Flame Leviathan is jank.
Gahz'rilla would maybe see more play if it were neutral, but it doesn't fit hunters well enough to serve the same purpose Boom does.
Malorne's problem isn't just boom, it's every other expensive card in the game. Ancient of War and Ancient of Lore are both better seven drops, and for that matter, most of the 8/9 drops are better 7 drops for druid than this.
Neptulon would see play. Woohoo shaman?
Iron Juggernaut is jank.
There isn't a popularized rogue deck to make good use of Trade Prince, it has nothing to do with Boom.
Bolvar is jank.
Vol'jin already sees the same kind of play he would if Boom was gone. In fact, one less super common fatty in the meta gives me less reason to play Vol'jin.
You really think "Boom being gone wouldn't change the amount that these cards are played?"
Mister_Smith said nearly the same thing.
Did you not read my reply to him? (see below) It applies here too.
I certainly would play these cards if Boom was gone. And with more than 30 million players there are certainly others.
You really think that no one would play these cards if Boom got nerfed? There is even 1 person explicitly stating that he would. That would certainly be more play for these cards. The change might not be a lot if only one person started playing them, but it would still be a change that gets these cards more play.
With the millions of players in this game, even if only 1% of the players started playing these cards, that's something like 250,000 people playing these cards.
Come on man, use your brain. 2+2=4 If you really still think that a Boom nerf would not increase the amount of play these cards see, then you are either lying or increadibly dim-witted.
So you are saying that if Boom was removed / nerfed, none of these cards would be tried? Noone would innovate and make new decks? What would everyone replace their Booms with?
Atleast initially there would be a huge shake up. And many of these cards would get play as people try to replace Boom or make new decks.
Some might even stick. We might even get a few new deck types that weren't tried or weren't viable due to Boom being better / warping the meta.
The meta would stay the same?
Certainly not, it would slow down. Making many of these cards "better."
You can't see one of these other GvG cards being good in a world where Boom doesn't exist?
He's a big part of the reason for the super speed/tempo meta we have. Things would change alot when the most powerful card in the game suddenly isn't.

Kripp talking about talking with Blizzard devs mentions that Blizzard has said they don't want to nerf Boom because it will make people sad, essentially admitting that he is OP and also admitting that they won't balance their game if it affects sales. So pro.
Wonder if they realize that leaving in OP cards that give out free wins to unskilled players makes others unhappy also. 54 pages worth of unhappy. Not to mention all the jokes the casters make around him being unbalanced, and when his RNG bombs happen, then come the jokes mocking hearthstone for the "skill" it took to get the RNG you needed to win.
I guess they are catering to the casual gamer, but they are also killing the pro scene. RNGstone.
How much late game decks we have right now? Even Control Warrior is a lot weaker today. The only late game deck still running is freezemage and handlock, and freezemage is more a combo deck than a late game deck. And handlock only works because Jarax or Malganis have both effects that protects the hero.
Late Game decks in HS (that run Dr. Boom) : Handlock, Control Warrior, Midrange Paladin, Freeze Mage, Overload Shaman, any Priest deck, Dragon Paladin, Ramp Druid, Combo Druid (9 total)
Late Game decks in HS : (without Dr. Boom) : Freeze Mage, Patron Warrior (2 total)
Fast decks in HS : Hunter, Mech Shaman, Mech Mage, Zoolock, Shockadin, that one face Priest deck that was popular for all of 5 seconds (6 total)
The problem here is the decks listed aren't late game decks. Control Warrior and Freeze Mage are the only two decks you listed that are late game / Control decks.
All the rest are Tempo, Midrange, Aggro, or Combo. And there are no signs of late game Control decks making a comeback. We are only going futher into the speed game.
Dr Boom is 7 mana but he is certainly not a late game card or a control card. He is part of the reason why even higher mana cost decks aren't late game / control anymore. When there are OP Tempo cards at all costs there is no reason to do anything other than not think, and go for speed.
Here's an interesting truth I heard from someone:
Boom hinders the ability to play so many awesome cards.
Every Legendary thread: "GET BOOM NAO."
Adding another Boom just further weakens the previous unloved Legedaries even more and makes less and less playable cards. This is not the way to move forward.
How can so many people try to defend a clearly broken OP card? It is making me sick. Honestly, just threw up in the sink.
Think of it from a new player's prospective, a player who doesn't have any Legedary cards. Boom is one of the main things that is making it harder and harder for new players to get into this game. Even someone who has done every quest offered for 6 months, and opened 200 packs can still have only 1-2 Legendary cards.
Compared to pre-GvG, for a new player, he essentially is an additional 1600 dust you need to spend to be competitive. The barrier to competitive play was raised by 1600 once Boom was released. And with the terrible RNG reward system they got, worse than internet gambling, which is illegal in America, 1600 can easily take a few months to get. When you consider that even 6 months in you can still not even have enough dust to buy all the cards from just 1 single class, it starts to add up real quick, and that seemingly insignificant 1600 additional dust, can be a huge problem for new players.
Before GvG there were many different answers to the "WHICH LEGENDARY CARD SHOULD I GET?" threads. Everyone had something different to say, and it depended on your class, deck type, etc. Now there is only ONE Legendary card that EVERYONE says to get first, no matter the class or build, doesn't even matter the mana cost, he is simply THE BEST LEGENDARY IN THE GAME, hands down. This should not be. Clearly a sign of a card made too strong.
In one card, you get multiple minions, build a board, get a huge tempo swing from the ridiculous stats for a 7 mana card, clear the enemy board(boom bots function is essentially a board clear), and you get to do all this from a card that is non-situational, and has no counter.
What this poll says: Around 85% of Hearthpwn users could never be game developers.
Farebad, Dr. Boom, fare bad. Enjoy your new casual mode.
Dear Dr. Boom,
Enjoy your stay in CASUAL FORMAT and good riddance.
