D&D : We really hope this ending is like Breaking Bad where people were conflicted if it's an A or an A+
They broke finale records, alright. For reference, this is several stars worse than all the other infamously controversial finales like those of Lost, the Sopranos, How I met your Mother, True Blood, etc
I am seriously disgusted that they even dare compare their work to Breaking Bad. These guys become more unlikeable by the day.
I was just reminded by a post on r/Freefolk that the only purpose of the horse that Arya rode away on at the end of episode 5 was to make it look cool. Once again they show us that they don't care at all about logic as long as it makes a scene look good.
Just watched the ending. Honestly, after the last three episodes which I all hated with a passion I didn't expect much from the last episode. I still hated the first half for all the reasons I hated the last episode. The rest of the episode just left me with an empty feeling. This isn't a bittersweet ending like GRRM told us we would get, this felt more like a fairytale ending, but whatever.
I guess I'm just glad we won't get any more disappointing episodes of Game of Thrones and I can just rewatch seasons 1-4 and try to pretend it all ends there. I also hope GRRM finishes his books (though I am sceptical about that) and delivers something with the quality of what we used to get, so we will at least have something better than this.
Character being different in later seasons than in earlier seasons = character progression, as long as we like the outcome
Character being different in later seasons than in earlier seasons = inconsistent writing, as long as we hate the outcome
come on guys
Let me correct you:
Character being different in later seasons than in earlier seasons as a logical result of his experiences and actions = character progression
Character being different in later seasons than in earlier seasons just for the sake of subverting expectations or plot requirements = inconsistent writing
To all the people saying Daenerys' actions made sense and were set up properly I'd like to point out the following:
In the first 4 seasons Daenerys was constantly trying to help the helpless. She wanted the dothraki to stop mindlessly killing and raping people, even though that is basically their entire culture. She killed all the slavers in Astapor and told the slaves she freed (including the unsullied) that they were free to go. She went to Yunkai, where they offered her ships so that she could go to Westeros and do what her initial purpose was, but instead she chose to free the people of Yunkai from their masters. Then she went on to Meereen to do the exact same and stayed there to make sure slavery was going to be ended permanently.
Sure, after that things definitely didn't all go too well for her until halfway through season 6 where suddenly everyone flocked to her side. Then when she went to Westeros things still didn't go very smoothly, but in the end she got what she wanted. Jon told her he doesn't want the throne so there's really not much reason for her to worry about him being the true heir, and she beat Cersei. Even if everyone knew about Jon's true heritage he could just say 'I don't want to be king and I declare Daenerys the queen of the seven kingdoms' and most people would have been okay with it.
It has already been stated enough that her going mad was setup poorly so I won't go into that too much, but all of you who think her actions made sense are forgetting this: She won, every one of her enemies surrendered to her, and even if she still decided her enemies (or just Cersei since no one besides her and Euron have actively wronged her) had to pay for their actions, she could have just gone straight for the red keep where all of her remaining enemies were. The main problem isn't Daenerys 'going mad', it's that she has apparently become so mad that she is slaughtering countless innocents for no damn reason at all, while she used to be someone who would do everything to make sure that the oppressed masses are treated appropriately.
Daenerys has had the tendency to go too far in punishing those she believed to be in the wrong so I can see why you would think Daenerys losing it made some sense, but I just can't possibly begin to understand how you can think that it makes sense for her to mindlessly slaughter innocent civilians.
It blows my mind how many people are saying something along the lines of you, that this was out of no where and we didn't see it coming...Like really????
Almost every time she has tried to do something right or listened to her advisors it has bite her in the ass. I mean like where should we start? Her descend into finally snapping has been in the works for a long time.
- Her brother treated her like trash like she was a object her whole life. - When she tried to be merciful to the witch that was about to be raped she ended up betraying her by killing her husband and unborn child. - When she was in Qarth she was betrayed by the person that let her into the city and also one of her close friends. - Barristan Selmy gets iced when the city turns on her. - When helping Jon it ended up costing her a Dragon when she went North of the wall to save him. - At Winterfell loses half her army and Jorah trying to do the right thing. - Missandei gets her head chopped off. - Gets betrayed once again by her close advisor Vary's. - Loses another Dragon - Finds out she's not actually the true heir and destined for the throne - Has another relationship go to shambles with Jon - Most of Westoros is taking a dump on her face - Most people aren't giving her the respect she deserves after everything she has sacrificed.
Am sure am missing a few more things here and people are sitting here wondering why she's so emotionally unstable and finally snaps and says fuck it when Cersei is in her sights. Honestly it's very realistic. Sometimes people just snap under the pressure and in the moment especially after a series of traumatizing events.
Did you even read my post? I said that I can understand that she would go crazy AT CERSEI, not at thousands of innocent people who have not wronged her in any way.

Or maybe this is the ending GRRM had always envisioned, leaving D&D to scramble for some kind of connecting line that got them from the earlier seasons to this result. Dany becomes the Mad Queen because Martin told them she would, but we don't have the time or the pages to get there on a slower clip. This could be seen as a failure of D&D in their attempts to wrap up the show sooner than HBO would prefer, but much of this comes down to what they were given to work with.
I agree that D&D were probably not given enough to work with by GRRM, but that still doesn't excuse their incredibly lazy and inconsistent writing.
'Dany kinda forgot about the Iron fleet' -> dumb shit like this is proof that they don't care anymore and just want to be done with the show as soon as possible.
But hey, at least we got a zombie polar bear am I right?
Holy fucking shit what an absolute shitshow. I mean, I didn't expect much anymore and they still managed to disappoint.
How do you follow up episode 3 and manage to get even worse?
So we start off by firing Varys because he is the last smart character left in the show and we can't have that. Everyone is surprisingly okay with this.
Then we start the battle with some quick maths:
1 Scorpion vs Drogon = taken out of combat with one hit, taking two shots
about 5 scorpions vs Drogon & rhaegal = instant kill with triple bullseye
ALL THE SCORPIONS vs Drogon = incapable of doing anything
all the previous set up of "the odds are frighteningly even" are thrown out of the window. The entire Night King plot therefore had ABSOLUTELY NO POINT and if you ignored that it happened ABSOLUTELY NOTHING would change.
Drogon has also upgraded his fire breath to a disintegration beam that explodes on impact. There is no explanation. MEanwhile the Dothraki have learned the power of mitosis and multiplied of screen. They still fail to factor into the battle except for one scene.
Arya is determined to killl Cersei despite it being pretty clear that Cersei will not survive anyways. She immediately gets talked out of it by the HOund, who for some reason is really determined to kill his brother. This has nothing to do with his arc. He goes on basically a suicide mission to get revenge, despite him barely even mentioning it before. His entire story was about changing him from a lonely nihilist to someone who actually cares about certain people...but no, Cleganebowl has to happen. It wouldn't make sense if he just followed Arya and 1v1d the mountain to let her follow Cersei or something...nnah he's just gonna do his Mortal Kombat shit, because fuck it, his character has been dead in the books for a long time so it really doesn't matter whether he has an actual consistent characterization or not.
Also, for some reason the Mountain conveniently decides to have some desire to fight his brother despite being a braindead zombie. There is no reason for this other than Cleganebowl. Did they forgot that the Mountain doesn't actually hate his brother? He pushed him into the fire as a kid and is just a dick. He doesn't give a fuck about him otherwise. There's literally no reason why he would abandon his post just for a 1v1.
Dany goes from 0 to insane for no reason at all. There's literally nothing to provoke her. She destroyed all the scorpions and all she has to do is burn down the Red Keep. Instead she decides to do a little Holocaust just because. After all, we only have one episode left and we need a reason for her to die. Also we conveniently never actually cut to her while genociding so we just have to assume she's laughing maniacally, her hair has turned green, she has the words "damaged" tatooted on her forehead and talks about how "all it takes is one bad day"....presumably
we also get to follow some random orphans on their way to their extremely predictable death, because we have to manufacture drama somehow.
Arya has upgraded her Faceless Man game and instead of stealing faces she stole Euron's plot armor. He still had enough to casually swim up to shore and run into Jaime only to attack him for no reason. What is Euron's motivation? Previously it was that he wants power...then it was that he just wants to bang the queen. HIs character is non-existent, but apparently he's still important enough to not just get axed by the dragon.
Jon Snow continues to be useless as usual. For some reason all the Lannister soldiers still want to kill him though. His character at this point can be summed up by "I don't want to"
We no longer like Grey Worm. the Northerners are apparently psychopaths who commit war crimes the instant they have the opportunity too. Nobody tell the writers that the main reason why raping and pillaging happens is because the soldiers basically went through hell and have lost their humanity. these soldiers barely even fought anyone, they steamrolled a few confused soldiers and that's it. There is literally no reason for them to do anything of the sort, but hey, the dickless man with a hatred for helmets threw a sword so I guess it's time to go berserk.
Oh yeah and Tyrion again wanders around battlefields looking concerned
Arya continues to be punished for Killstealing and is rendered useless the entire episode. Instead, the coldblooded, downright inhuman assassin gremlin now becomes the audience stand-in to showcase the horrors of war. As a parting gift from the lord of light for doing such a good job she gets a horse to ride into the sunset. There is no symbolism. It's just ********.
Did I miss anything?
You missed Cersei and Jaime dying in the most anti-climactic way possible, because D&D once again subverted our expectations by having them killed by none other than, wait for it... falling rocks! On top of that Jaime's entire character arc is now completely ruined because he has ended exactly where he started back in season 1 when he was a completely different person. I guess he was scared of having to fuck Brienne for the rest of his life instead of Cersei who was actually good at it?
Other than that, great job, I agree with everything.
I have to admit, I actually liked her ending, partly because no matter how it was set up there wouldn't have been a satisfying death for her. Arya killilng her? Cool, but ultimately boring, Dany roasting her? Same.
I like that in the end it showed Cersei to still be human. I mean, she was basically sure she was going to win (and she would have if not for plot convenience) so having her witness her own downfall and realizing it was kind of poetic.
On the other hand Jaime was completely ruined as a character, but hey, at least we know whoever wrote the prophecy was a dyslexic moron who can't tell the difference between "dies by her brother's hands" and "dies in her brother's arms"
Yeah I agree about Cersei's death, I still don't think it was great, but it was definitely one of the better handled parts of the episode (although that doesn't mean much lol).
I was mostly disappointed with Jaime's actions and death in this episode, and because he and Cersei died together I guess I extended my hate to Cersei's death as well while that wasn't my intention.
Holy fucking shit what an absolute shitshow. I mean, I didn't expect much anymore and they still managed to disappoint.

Well after the shitstains we got in the previous two weeks I didnt expect much better than what we got this week. That won’t stop me from complaining about it though.
The only good things in the episode were the visuals, sound effects, music, acting, and the scene with Jaime and Tyrion. However, it was once again all ruined by the abysmal writing. Here’s everything that I think was wrong with the episode:
Varys acted really dumb, which is not what Varys normally did (in seasons 1-4 anyway). On an island full of people who support, serve and fight for Daenerys he just straight up tells Jon that he and not Daenerys should be the ruler of the seven kingdoms. And then he’s executed. I guess that’s another character too smart for Dumb and Dumber that they don’t have to pay attention to anymore.
Tyrion had no reason to tell Daenerys that Varys (his friend) betrayed her but he still does it anyway.
Meanwhile Jon is still blindly following Daenerys because he’s ‘in love’. Yeah right fuck you.
Magically resurrected unsullied and dothraki are confirmed.
The Golden company did literally nothing.
What the hell was Tyrion doing when he was casually walking on the battlefield? Tyrion is not a soldier or commander, he’s an advisor, which means he should sit safely behind a desk while the actual soldiers and commanders do the fighting. Oh right they just wanted a pov character to show us how terrible war is because after eight seasons they still think we don’t understand that.
Drogon is once again wearing invisible armor (aka plot armor) because the previously incredibly accurate towards Rhaegal scorpions are totally missing everything and there are more of them in one place than ever before (remember when Drogon got hit by just one of them?).
Euron magically survives just so he can fight Jaime which ends up having 0 significance to the story because Jaime survives both stabs and ends up reaching Cersei anyway.
Dany going crazy for no reason at all is the dumbest shit ever. 90% of the ‘setup’ it got was in this and the previous episode and that wasn’t nearly enough to justify her becoming this crazy. Not only does she randomly become ‘mad’, she also suddenly decides to direct her madness towards AN ENTIRE CITY OF INNOCENT PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALREADY SURRENDERED TO HER. Bull-fucking-shit.
Greyworm joining Daenerys is dumb af. ‘Ehh my hot girlfriend was murdered by your queen so now I’m going to murder you after you surrendered to me.’
The northmen and other unsullied joining is also dumb af. No way Jon and Davos are the only ones who think what is happening is horrible. Just because Daenerys suddenly decides to become a genocidal maniac her entire army suddenly decides to help her? Just, no…
Clegane bowl was kinda cool I guess except for the fact that the mountain SURVIVED A FUCKING KNIFE THROUGH HIS EYE which made no sense at all.
So Arya’s only purpose of being in king’s landing was to be a point of view character and of course she is the only one near the red keep who survives all of it because, you guessed it, fucking plot armor. There’s also no good reason Arya would suddenly decide to not go and kill Cersei after eight seasons of lying awake at night saying Cersei’s name.
Cersei’s and Jaime’s deaths were incredibly disappointing. Dumb and Dumber completely ruined Jaime’s entire character arc by making him end up at exactly the same place he started back in season 1, next to his manipulative bitch of a sister whom he still loves for no good reason at all. I guess he also just forgot about Cersei sending Bronn of all people to kill him and Tyrion in the previous episode. Jaime going to King’s Landing to kill Cersei would have been predictable but contrary to this bullshit it at least would have made some fucking sense. Instead they missed every opportunity they had at ending his arc in a positive way and gave us this lazy shit. Seriously Dumb & Dumber. Fuck. You.
I read the books first, then watched the series. The series is struggling for the same reason the books are struggling: It can't figure out whether it is The Game of Thrones, a drama where kings, queens and commoners battle for thrones, or High Fantasy, with magic, evil and undead monsters. The books and show would have been much better off just dropping the entire Night King plotline.
That being said:
The absolute lack of explaining any backstory of the Night King, who he was, how he came to be, what he wanted, etc. was a total failure in episode three. Listen, I get that that plot line was in the way of what made the show great, but spending 15 minutes in the episode to explain that character would have gone a looong way to tie up the second biggest plot line of the series. They had the time, we didn't need 15 more minutes of impossible-to-see battles.
Westeros is a world where every bad person has a shade of good, and every good person has a shade of bad. However, we get this one pure evil monarch who apparently was just bad, needed to be killed, but we don't know a thing about him. The show hinted at his story, and so do the books . And we had Bran who knows the history of *everything* (another total failure of GRRM: You don't want Gods in your books or else they become entirely uninteresting), yet offers no hint of who this Night King was. A 700 foot magical wall was created thousands of years ago to keep him out, entire armies protected it for those millenia, he has the ability raise the dead... and then Arya appears out of nowhere and stabs him, and that's that. OK, time to move on.... nothing to see here... what?!?
I didn't really like the Night King story line. In the books, it felt like GRRM trying to stick to High Fantasy "standard", even though he didn't really want to write about it. Who got this castle or who got that castle is insignificant when compared to this immortal undead army to the North, and he generally undermined any drama in the game of thrones. However, he *was* a major character for the entire series, and should have been addressed.
However, the total lack of any backstory or any understanding that we were given to the character in episode three basically caused the show to jump the shark for me. You have Bran, who *knows* the entire backstory, yet doesn't say a word about him. You could have had his death somewhat dramatic, but instead Arya disappears for 30 minutes, and just appears next to him and stabs him. It was the most anti-climactic, how-did-that-get-out-of-the-writer's-room moment in any quality show I've ever watched. I really lost interest the show after that.
wat? they showed how and why the night king was created a few seasons ago.
They showed how (in a very vague way) and why he was created by the children of the forest, but they never showed or told us anything about what HE and the other white walkers wanted. They just decided to make him evil for the sake of being evil, which is exactly the kind of villain George RR Martin wanted to avoid when he wrote a Song of Ice and Fire.
Just watched the episode. If I had to describe it in one word I'd say: 'meh'.
The first half hour felt completely pointless to me. Almost no one we cared about died last episode so Jon's speech felt really bland. Then we just get more 'hey did you know I did this when this show was still good' dialogue. Seriously ever since season 7 I feel like the writers just use that as filler because the actually important stuff is not enough to fill an entire episode, and since it makes the viewers go 'ha yeah I remember that!' it makes them forget that it's filler.
I used to really like Jaime and Brienne. I was expecting Brienne to die in the previous episode while defending Jaime. It would have been a poetic end since back in season 2 she said to him 'Who wants to die defending a Lannister?'. But they just had to make them have sex because everyone ends up with the one they love now. Ugh. Of course Brienne might still die the way I predicted, I just don't think this stuff was necessary at all.
I like the conflict between Daenerys and the people who would rather see Jon on the throne, I'm curious how that's going to play out. Thank god Varys is finally getting off his ass and doing something.
Jon not giving any kind of attention to Ghost felt reeeeaaally out of character. They have time to show us characters telling pointless jokes for half an hour but they don't have time to show Jon showing the tiniest but of affection Ghost?
Euron ambushing Daenerys definitely took me by surprise (Poor Rhaegal, he barely survived last episode and now he got slaughtered like this). I do find it hard to believe that Daenerys wasn't able to see Euron's fleet while they were able to perfectly aim for Rhaegal. It's also veeery convenient for Drogon that they completely lost their ability to aim after they perfectly shot down his brother, but whatever. Also, I might have missed it but I found them capturing Missandei pretty unconvincing. Not only how they did it but also how they were able to know who she was and why she was important (because let's face it, she was only important because Daenerys and Greyworm cared about her and not for much else). I guess Qyburn's spies told him about her but I still think it's weird.
I kinda liked the last scene but there were still some things that bothered me. First of all, Tyrion really seems to have a death wish because he keeps giving Cersei every possible opportunity to kill her. Luckily for him, Cersei suddenly stopped wanting him dead ever since he started giving her those opportunities. Sure she knows he didn't kill Joffrey but he still killed their father and shipped of Myrcella to Dorne. She has plenty of reason to still want him dead. The second thing didn't bother me that much but I feel like Euron should have noticed how Tyrion knew Cersei is pregnant. Tyrion couldn't have any way of knowing unless she got pregnant before she fucked Euron.
Missandei's death was a good way to end the episode. I didn't care about her at all (nor did I care about her lame and pointless romance with Greyworm) and it's good that Daenerys (and Greyworm) have more motivation to go all in on Cersei. So all in all I don't think this was a good episode but it was still better than the last one. However if I'm honest I have very little hope that they will be able to tie everything up in a good way.
Edit: oops forgot to put it in spoilers
Also I just remembered more things I wanted to talk about, so here we go!
We just saw the dothraki and unsullied getting completely whiped out in the previous episode, but I guess the writers forgot they still needed daenerys to have some troops left to fight Cersei so they magically resurrected half of them.
What the fuck was that scene with Bronn? He just appeared out of nowhere, demanded double of what Cersei offered him, and then just left. What the hell was the point of Cersei telling Bronn to kill Tyrion and Jaime?
Why did they cut away as soon as Bran was going to reveal Jon's secret to Arya and Sansa? Isn't it important to show us what they think about this? Nah they just cut away and then later show that Sansa is immediately going to tell the secret (we again don't get to see her actually telling it...) which she was obviously going to do and we don't see Arya talking about it at all.
Glad to see the writers are at least consistent when it comes to one thing because teleportation is back! It's not like there's over half a continent in distance between Winterfell and Dragonstone or anything...
Lastly, why didn't Cersei just order to fire the ballistas at Drogon and Daenerys & co.? They should have known better than to just openly stand in front of the enemy gates. Luckily the writers made Cersei too dumb to take advantage of this.
Also I completely missed that there was a Starbucks cup in front of Daenerys but that's hilarious.
I also realized that my 'meh' was actually too high of a rating for this episode, so I'd like to change it to a big fat 'bleh'.
I am seriously disgusted that they even dare compare their work to Breaking Bad. These guys become more unlikeable by the day.
I was just reminded by a post on r/Freefolk that the only purpose of the horse that Arya rode away on at the end of episode 5 was to make it look cool. Once again they show us that they don't care at all about logic as long as it makes a scene look good.
https://www.reddit.com/r/freefolk/comments/bqpfk2/earns_my_vote_for_the_most_useless_character_award/
If this video doesn't prove to you why Daenerys burning down an entire city of innocent people is completely nonsensical then nothing will:
Let me correct you:
Character being different in later seasons than in earlier seasons as a logical result of his experiences and actions = character progression
Character being different in later seasons than in earlier seasons just for the sake of subverting expectations or plot requirements = inconsistent writing
Did you even read my post? I said that I can understand that she would go crazy AT CERSEI, not at thousands of innocent people who have not wronged her in any way.

Yeah I agree about Cersei's death, I still don't think it was great, but it was definitely one of the better handled parts of the episode (although that doesn't mean much lol).
I was mostly disappointed with Jaime's actions and death in this episode, and because he and Cersei died together I guess I extended my hate to Cersei's death as well while that wasn't my intention.
This is beautiful, thank you.
Haha I've already seen that, such a great video.
