Sometimes I have a hard time ending games with my Control Priest but I was thinking if Velen would be viable as a way to finish if you have say 1 copy of mindblast and one copy of holy fire to combo with velen for a finisher. I know he isn't used too much but is he just underrated or a bad card?
Ide say its a little too combo dependent, I mean Priest already has too many cards that need to be combo-ed and adding velen which requires you to have Mind blast or Holy fire in your had to make use of him is too much of a liability also keeping in mind if you want to combo with Holyfire you need to have him live a turn.
It can be a good card if you manage to combo it with 2 x Mind Blast and deal 20 damage. Even if you have only one Mind Blast it's still 10 damage. The only problem is that it's a late-game combo. I actually like more the Zombie Chow - Auchenai Soulpriest - Circle of Healing combo, because even if you don't have the Auchenai Soulpriest in your hand you can still use Zombie Chow to control the board. So maybe you should try this and see how it works.
Im playing a Velen Priest for about half a year now (rank1-5) and people are really underestimating him. Sure, its not the best card, but he opens a lot of options. Heal for 4 is great, so is the auchenai ping. Vs Freeze Mage he often wins the game by himself. He increases your chances vs Handlock alot (not as much as pre GvG sadly, stupid healingbots ^^'). With light of the naaru he can give u this extra turn vs aggro to survive.
Fazit: You dont make your games easier by playing velen, but it sure is a lot of fun and your opponents will usualy be surprised ;)
This was one of the first legendaries i got in card packs and i had decent use for him pre gvg but its so hard to use him effectively now. I am in need of other legendaries but i'd probably regret disenchanting this card, theres gotta be ways to make the card work in more decks, even better a deck that includes Vol'jin
It's a pretty fun deck that uses Shadowformto control the board and healbots/holy fire to stabilize and keep you alive. It can lose against super aggro decks like Shockadin, but it performs fairly well against Hunter secret decks as well as Zoo.
You have to be in a situation where the opponent has already spent their kill spells (BGH especially), and also be close enough that you can finish the game, and yet still have enough of a cushion that you haven't simply spent your Holy Fire/Holy Smite yet as removal. So, situations where he is actually buffing damage do not happen very much. Dr Boom is much more reliable for that.
But a class legendary is a class legendary, so he probably ends up in the top 5 of Priest finishers after Vol'jin, Sylvannus, Cairne, and Boom. I would say he's better than the old finishers Control Warrior uses, including Ysera, Rag, Alex, and Baron. Sort of a War Golem that is easy to heal, and that's at worst.
Thanks for those lists, I will have to give them a try. I still have a hard time using Shadowform properly. Seems like I want to use it as soon as I can to beat out low cost minions, but all it ever does is put me behind and i end up playing "catch up" with all these aggro decks.

You don't want to use it early. Its a huge tempo loss if you use it early and would only be a viable play if your opponent was passing hero powering for the first 3 turns.
By that same token, don't be afraid to take a little face damage. The key to using shadowform is using it at the right time. There's no rush to use it until you have a good opportunity to make maximum use of your mana. (i.e. Hero Power Heal --->Shadowform-->Hero Power Mind Spike : On turn 7)
Velen's one of the first legendaries I opened and I've always wanted to find a way to work him into a deck. I don't play priest that much, but I have fun with it sometimes. Anyway, I put together a relatively standard post-GvG deck with Velen in it a few weeks ago and gave it a few test runs and I was pretty surprised, it ended up working better than I expected. Priests have pretty good card draw, and they're designed for late game, so the chances of having the Velen+mind blast finisher by the time you need the finisher are pretty high. Biggest thing I learned about playing him is to not think of him as a 7 drop! I found him much more effective on turn 9 or 10, sometimes later, depending on the state of the game. It's not a card that can help you take back the board, but it can definitely help you keep your opponent from taking back the board. Gotta use him as the last nail in the coffin.

Not really. You can't protect it, and you can't really cast it with a meaningful spell in the same turn.
The card is sweet, but if it's a 9 drop with "battlecry: gain 4 life" it's not very good, which it is far too often.

I'm actually using both. I went ahead and created my decklist:

Zetalot is the best player out there using Prophet Velen. You should check out his stream and his Prophecy deck.
