As the title implies ,i want to know what others think about downvoting on this site in general.
I myself like something that i totally agree with and dislike something that i totally disagree whit ,so 95%/98% of comments i don't rate.
Personally i don't see any usefulness in makeing a sum of upvoting+downvoting ,and think it should be calculated separately. I saw posts where even if somebody has valid arguments there downvoted to oblivion just because the comment had a bigger opposition party almost no replies whatsoever. Or sarcastic comments that were totally misunderstood and downvoted .
Comments that talk about multiple subjects or multiple cards usually have a higher amount of downvotes . Example they announce a nerf patch , and a comment writes about all 7 cards it may get 50 likes but it will also get 40 dislikes cause some people didn't agree with part of the statement 1-2 of the 7 cards (35) or all of the statement 7/7 (5) of the cards So it will have a total score of 10.
In contrast another comment that just talks about 1 of the 7 cards will have people that agree (50) or disagree (15) with the comment , and no dislikes from people that partially disagree , leaving it with a total score of (35).
Now this wouldn't be bad , but this site actually hides very downvoted comments (-30>), and people do actually scrool through forums with multiple pages looking only at some comments , mostly highly upvoted comments. And by doing so , returning to our example listed above you will probably see the 35 like comment but not the 10 like one. Even though if we only count the likes it would be 40 to 35
I think downvoting is useful when it comes to hiding misinformation. Quite a lot of interactions on this website are people asking practical questions - will there be a dust refund/how does this interaction work/will I keep the core cards when they rotate etc. - and I think it is quite valuable to be able to downvote wrong answers and upvote correct ones.
I don't agree that downvoting is "useful for hiding misinformation". It is certainly useful for making coordinated strikes to hide comments you don't like.
From what I see, the only comments that usually get hidden are the ones that are so glaringly stupid that we all can't help but downvote them ("Blizard shud delet Priest they kepp healinh and wont let me win"). Actual misinformation and scam links tend to be left up or stay around longer because most people just ignore them.
Upvoting is useful because it draws your eyes to posts, comments and decks that people have found helpful or entertaining.
Downvoting is not necessarily useful, but it is necessary for the sake of democracy. Not everyone is going to agree on what is useful or entertaining. I love democracy, I love the republic.

"I don't agree that downvoting is "useful for hiding misinformation". It is certainly useful for making coordinated strikes to hide comments you don't like." This,Exactly this .If you target the wrong party (has alot of supporters) your comment will be hidden . But if the downvotes and upvotes would be calculated separatly instead of being summed , you'd see both and both partys opinion would be visible
Look man, it's a form of democracy. I don't condemn the downvotes, they separate the smart ones from the dumbs. if a lot of ppl downvote something in this site, most of them are white knights defendors of blizzard way of (life) business, or just not mature enough to understand adult world.
Oh god, he talks about democracy, on a private site no less. It would seem you're not mature enough to understand adult world.
What does democracy and this being a "private site" (which it certainly ain't) have to do with each other? I'm pretty sure the white house/10 downing Street etc are all private buildings too but are also part of democratic countries.
Also if anything, private sites are closer to a democracy than public sites (like this one is) because everyone who is allowed access to them generally have more say/power on the site.

The 'democracy' people mention is about 'free speech'. Free speech laws exists to stop THE STATE from controlling it, not a private party in a private setting. 10 downing and the White House most certainly CAN and WILL force you to control your demeanor, while if you're in my house i can control your speech and actions by kicking you out. You have no right to 'free speech' in my house, just like you have no intrinsic right to free speech on this site in particular. You have it because THEY allow it, in their private setting. Because they chose to moderate they have an obligation to keep doing it, so THEY don't become liable for something YOU say. A private site has nothing to do with democracy, it's not legally a public quorum, even if Musk implies it.
That being said, from a functional point of view, having likes and dislikes counted and shown separately can show that a thing is popular yet contested. Having them shown together in the same situation can imply lack of interest instead. First approach just gives more information.
Downvoting can be included as a different icon next to the like button but it wouldn't really make a difference.
The comments that are filtered out are filtered out for a reason because of the negative feedback.
One example I can think of is a post before about Zeddy. I don't like the guy, his stream, act and opinions. And that's my opinion.
But he has an army of followers and fans. My comment would get plenty of downvotes even if some people agree with me. And I don't really care if my comment gets filtered out or removed because it had to many downvotes. It was my choice to comment it even though I could have just ignored it and move on.

in reality, its used whenever people talk shit about dev decisions or give contrarian opinions
u get both sides of the spectrum you get hate bombing but u get good stuff like the EA PRIDE AND ACCOMPLISHMENT BS that needs to be called out it's up to the common sense of the user to distinguish with their brain cells which one is which but it's definitely needed in a society that heavily pushes censorship

Okay... That's nice to know about free speech, but I wasn't really talking about free speech.. I was pretty much only saying that this ain't a private site.
But if we're talking about free speech then I agree with you there, even in top economic democratic countries the idea of free speech is.. interpretational at best, with plenty of people being arrested for saying something someone else disagrees with... But when it comes to the whole "majority of a state have a say/vote on things" part of democracy, then this site technically has it with the upvotes/downvotes. I mean "vote" is written in the words and that's quite a big part of democracy, allowing everyone the right to vote.
Also I have no idea what Musk has to do with this, I don't follow him or anything so I can't say anything on that. The way I see it is if over half the members on a site have the right to vote and speak, then it's pretty much a democracy as far as websites go. But the idea that a site can actually be a true democracy is naively optimistic at best, and a site dedicated to Hearthstone would definitely have some rules about what not to talk about. Basically anything not Hearthstone related 😂 which does take away the right of total free speech but when it comes to Hearthstone and blizzard, then I think we have a pretty large spectrum on what we can talk about, you can praise them or condemn them, claim they're the worst company, compare them to cancer, whatever you want and chances are, the comment won't be removed. But if I kept uploading muffin recipes on here every day, I'm pretty a Mod would send me a message saying "Dude. Can you not?"
No. Controversial opinion, which is often where either the truth is found, or the obvious lie that needs to be addressed, gets downvoted to oblivion. Back-slapping, circlejerking, even virtue signalling, call it what you want, but that is the result of system with downvotes.
Message boards and other txt based media aren't youtube - youtube really really needed a downvote button, to combat algorythmic BS, adverstising, sell-outs, etc and so it was removed as Google make more money that way.

People love censorship cause why else should you use your brain if 'they' decide your opinion anyway? 🤷♀️
Yep its disgusting.

Lmao
That's a good point actually. I do prefer seeing both likes & dislikes separately.
My sarcasm gets downvoted all the time, but I really don't care. If you want to see a comment that has been hidden by downvotes, you can.

Downvoting is absolutely required - how else am I meant to express my mob mentality?
