Been playing MTGA for the last two weeks and starting to pick it up. I played MTG back in 1994-95 until some kid stole half my collection at summer camp.
I love crafting decks, and can usually come up with a handful of competitive non-meta decks (currently running tempo spellstone warrior and spiteful mage).
I hate how MTGA always feels like top deck mode after four turns, and I realized the game is way more fun if you put cards in your deck that say "whenever... ...draw a card".
By now I'm card/gold/dust rich in HS so I have a lot more incentive to grind MTGA to build a collection. HS definitely just feels more satisfying to play and win, but I'm enjoying figuring out how to win with MTGA.
I'm thinking about streaming it in late January/February but I dread the amount of cash that I will have to sink into this game in order to provide optimized and various decks :/
Difficult to choose since it's two games that are very similar in my opinion and that I really like. But I would say HS anyway. I think it's because it's the first game I played and it's the one that won me first (even MTGA is really good) and I find myself better in it.
Just because I did not find any other good thread:
There is another redeem code available (on top of "playravnica" for thrree packs). Has to be used by December 16, 11PM PT. Code is "gameawards" and gives you a bunch of very good cards (for details see the link). Every new account will really appreciate them.
I have played MTGA now a lot of hours and it is a lot of fun...while it's nowhere near as competitive as Hearthstone. There are mechanics that are great, but it is like the real life MTG of course.
It takes way more skill of when to block, when to attack. But the snowballing in this game is simply insane. Once a deck rolls (which is even worse as it is in hearthstone) you have lost.
It definetly a great game to play until the rotation hits hearthstone and removes all lovely cancershit.
Just finished a long game where we both could simply fill our boards that the icons became that fucking small, and the one who would attack with his creatures would simply lose. Yeah, that's just a terrible design sadly.

What? Really? And where are all the fun cards like Yogg in Magic? I think the design of most Magic cards is way more focused on winning than in Hearthstone. And thus it should also be more "competitive". Except you meant something different there...

That's the big problem with the blocking mechanic. It might provide more interaction, but at the same time it leads to situations like these. And that just makes the game super boring. The gameplay in Hearthstone on the other hand is way more "fluid" and much more interesting although it does create the problem of "curvestone" where if one goes for "tempo plays" everyone either the other has to follow suit or need a really big comeback mechanic which a lot of the time even closes the game. But overall it's still much better than not attacking the entire time until someone draws something to break the symmetry in similar matchups where in Hearthstone it's an ongoing back and forth which keeps the game interesting.
I really don't know what I meant while I typed this, but it's not what I think I meant.
But after watching lot of Noxious with his kind of memedecks this weekend I feel even more terrified tbh. If his decks rolled out he was simply unstoppable. Back when I played RL magic I never noticed the insane snowballing this game delivers because I was young and the cards were limited :D
I definetly love the playstyle that is build around minions in the game. But spending more time and money in this game is not working for me beside casual playing. But you can get a lot of cards pretty fast, even f2p, that's fine, combined with the welcome Bundle for 5 Bucks its worth.
The only reason I play hs more that mtga is land flood/screw. I find that to be super frustrating and all too common an occurrence.
I also hate the part where both my opponent and I are top decking. It happens rarely in HS but it seems to happen a lot in MTGA. It's especially frustrating because of the block mechanics no one attacks because they'll lose. With lands in your deck it's just dead turns of casting a land, doing nothing, pass turn.
I'm shocked to say this as a long time mtg player but I really prefer HS. The laddering experience just feels way better: there are lots of decks viable (at least in standard) as of now and it feels like every game can swing consistently based on the route you take. MTGA ranked on the other hand is not as fresh (the game now has only a few decks you can reach mythic with: mono R, white weenie, drakes, Golgari and Jeskai Control.
What I enjoy most about MTGA is drafting and it feels like the game economy is so much better and more rewarding than HS. I think having such a strong competitor will only make both games better :)
Digital: Hearthstone all the way. I loved the MtG Duels series, thought the Origins Duels was onto something, but Arena just doesn't do it for me.
Paper: MtG. I absolutely love drafting. Would never do it online (again). Meeting with players, all with various skill, drafting, building decks, playing, while having a laugh and discussing what works and what doesn't, is the best. Hearthstone will never achieve this. I tried organising a Rastakan prerelease event in my region, but only 3 or 4 people were keen, and even then we couldn't sort out a time or venue. If more incentive (and structure) was put into Fireside Gatherings,--being a weekly meetup?--it could make in-person play more awesome for HS.

This + mulligan system. I usually don't even bother to continue the game If I get no goodish hand after the mulligan.
I play it sometimes when I have time and have no fresh things I want to try in Hearthstone but I would have went mad if it was my main game... If only Hearthstone had better limited than Arena...
mainly because it's a computer game so actually accessible. I imagine even if I managed to build a deck for magick I doubt I'd ever get to play that many games.
I know they have digital versions, but hearthstone is much better.

Love queuing for a game, watching my opponent mulligan 2 times and quit.... <_<
i love mtg and played it for almost 10 years (physical version), but sadly it does not translate well into virtual mode simply because you need prompts for every phase / instant answers and it gets slow and boring af...
MTG can be great in person, but if playing against someone not really paying attention it can be very frustrating and that is far worse online because you can’t just smack or yell at the person.
i think hearthstone wins for the flavor, and liveliness of it. MTGA does not have that kind of flavor to it,
MTG doesn’t have great flavour. Most of it is pretty generic fantasy without the quirkiness and far more disjointed than Hearthstone.
3) Lands and mulligan. While bad draws happen in hearthstone, they are far rarer and a big part of that is that you can’t end up drawing just lands or no lands and being completely helpless. A half decent deck and alright mulligans should give you early game plays virtually every game. The free mulligan is also really nice, especially for a more causal player that may not be as good at judging the value of cards with the large cost of an MTG mulligan
The HS mulligan system will work wonders for MTGA, you just keep the only land your initial hand have and mulligan away 6 cards and get another 6 cards.
Mulligan in MTGA is almost a lose unless your opponent mulligan too, one single card is not that important in middle of the game but in starting hand is crucial, start with one less is horrible, I prefer pay 5 life for mulligan than 1 card.
The only reason I play hs more that mtga is land flood/screw. I find that to be super frustrating and all too common an occurrence.

Good for you. But I usually don't even bother doing the second mulligan ;)
Game should bring enjoyment to one who plays. I don't enjoy clawing out of low win% situation especially when I have less cards = less decision to make = less depends on my (low) skill.

Hearthstone... because you're in a hearthstone fan forum... with all hearthstone players... What other answer would you expect?

Three reasons I prefer Hearthstone to traditional MTG (having not played Arena):
1) This
MTG can be great in person, but if playing against someone not really paying attention it can be very frustrating and that is far worse online because you can’t just smack or yell at the person.
2) ThiS
MTG doesn’t have great flavour. Most of it is pretty generic fantasy without the quirkiness and far more disjointed than Hearthstone.

I'm a moron and a cheap skate
HS is right up my alley
I refuse to pay for packs and farm them free in arena...
i stash hoards of gold and afk for long periods with over 100k+ dust and 86k + gold i'm a plebster retard doofus and i can't think past going agro
Good for you. But I usually don't even bother doing the second mulligan ;)

They only thing that could get me into MTGA now is commander and that won't ever happen. Brawl is trash
Playing this marvelous game (MTGA) once again and having a lot of fun. God bless Wizards of the Coast!! :D
