All the Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment, Beyond Good & Evil, Bioshock 1 and infinite, Deus Ex (the original), Dragon Age: Origins, Elder Scrolls Morrowind-Skyrim, Jade Empire, Fallout, Mass Effect, Half Life all the versions, Warcraft 3, All the Broken Sword's, Keepsake, Syberia, The Longest Journey (Original, Dreamfall and the chapters), Tomb Raider Legend & Anniversary, Star Trek: Elite Force, Grand Theft Auto Vice City, Limbo, Portal & Portal 2, Knights of the Old Republic.
Nier Automata, all games in the Nier series to be honest but unfortunately Nier Automata is the only one in the series that has a spectacular story AND excellent gameplay, the previous titles had excellent stories and music but the gameplay left a lot to be desired.
Grim Fandango -- It's old now but there is a remastered version. One of the most unique settings and the best stories ever. Simply one of the greatest games ever made.
Final Fantasy 9 -- Everyone has their favourite FF game. This is mine.
Mass Effect Trilogy -- Epic Sci-fi done right
The Walking Dead Trilogy -- I never cared much for the TV show. Clem's journey is way more compelling
Hearthstone -- The stories I have to tell myself to keep justifying playing this fucking game are truly inventive.
This thread is 4 years old, I repeat this thread is 4 years old.
but half of the posts are kinda new here, and besides I believe people who suggest things are not doing it only for OP, but also for people who browse this thread. and it is obvious that it has some interest, recently.
The Kingdom Hearts games. So mind blowing, your head explodes if you try to understand what's going on with the story.
There is a huge difference between mind blowing, creativity and awesome stories and the nonsense, bloated and a script full of BS the Kingdom Hearts games become, they are the extreme example what cash grab, lazy and lack of passion can do to ruin a franchise.
PS: I am a big fan of the first and second game in PS2 era.

It's really just the story that's convoluted and terrible. Funnily enough as bad as the plot and story progression are, the actual game play is super tight, engaging and remains very fun throughout the series. You might just want to skip through every cut scene you can and completely ignore any of the story. If not, it can potentially drive you insane or trap your brain in perma derp.

For me half of the pleasure in a game is the story, that is why I like so much Nier Automata, Persona 5, Final Fantasy Tactics and many others, the sad part is in the first two games is not so bad but after that is a horrible mess.
If somebody wants an epic experience, go for "What remains of Edith Finch". I know it is more like a walking simulator, but that story was truely epic with a mindblowing ending.
Danganronpa V3. The best plot I've ever seen. The story, the characters, everything is just SO good. Just don't get spoiled (To fully understand the final you have to play/watch the first game/anime but it's worth it)
Its a little bit different than the rest of the games listed above, but if you enjoy lovecraft or lovecraftian themes, I definitely recommend Sunless Sea, Sunless Skies, and Cultist simulator. Theyre all incredibly enthralling and deffo worth the time.

I strongly suggest Shadow of the Colossus and the witcher 3

I can highly recommend:
- Nier Automata
- Deadly Premonition
- Death Stranding
- Yakuza 0
the remaster of Xenoblade Chronicles also very good and if you don´t mind older games Xenogears is great

if you have a ps3, inFamous 1 and 2. especially 1. it has the best mind-blowing story in my opinion.

Halo 1/2/3, and anything Elder Scrolls are the GOAT. There are many that are great and come close, but those are Tier S

KEKW last of us 2 seems really good with ABBIE and her fascination of golf clubs seems alike a good story hehehehe
