Because we are living in a stupid period of "righteousness" in which directors are forced to make black elves with no clue to the novel. Our stupid approach to "righteousness" regarding races and women it is what is killing art, and it is what is increasing inequality.
I mean, elves were white according to Tolkien (yes there were the drow black, but they were not described as this guy) why have you to make them black. It is so stupid.
By the way. I also find this way of thinking very racist. Because why do you fell the necessity to make a white character black? Are you feeling guilty? I mean, this is not inclusion. You are not cool because you make something white, black, you are stupid. Inclusion is in everyday life regarding our way to behalf as good citizens with the other people. Instead, if you are a clean person, something white is white, something black is black. I don't see the issue.
EDIT: Ah yes, there are also the black dwarf. This is really a forced inclusive diversity crap.
But I mean The Lord of the Rings was already a metaphor for diversity. At the end, the summary for the whole novel is the alliance of different races against the common threat. With every race will fight this common threat with his different skill set. Therefore, this is already a beautiful metaphor for diversity and inclusion that can be applied in these days.
Some races, like the dwarfs, are specified in the novel that they are white. Tolkien also describes why they are white. He wrote that dwarfs are so ugly that it is impossible to define who are men and who are women because also women have beards. Dwarfs are also white because they live and have grown inside lightless mountains, so they have little melanin in their skin and for this reason they are white (and this make sense).
Now I wonder why they represent a black woman dwarf that seems a model. Is there a physical reason why she is black? How can she have melanin in her skin if she has grown in a fucking cave? I don't think that they will be able to justify with a common sense these stupid choices. Like now, this seems to me like doing a new Black Panther film where you ask George Clooney to be the Black Panther.
