Oh, guys, did you know Amazon Studios is planning on making a Lord of the Rings series for television? I'm so excited about it, I can't wait!!! :D :D :D
We won't have to cry at the end of Game of Thrones because the new Lord of the Rings series is going to fill our empty hearts!!! :D :D :D
They are apparently also making a Wheel of Time tv show, FWIW.
And Netflix is making the Witcher.
Also, HBO will make eleven game of thrones spinoffs and milk this franchise bone dry, so you will have GoT to watch until you can't possibly watch anymore.
Yeah, I knew about all that too, but thanks for the reminder!!! XD

yeah I've heard that, iirc it will be themed between hobbit and fellowship of the ring books. It could be so cool, it will be most expensive serie also iirc. :D
I am scaring to die when i see someone else as Gandalf except Sir Ian Mckellen, but well, it would happen sooner or later. :)

To be fair, 95% of this is GRRM's fault. The show runners are actually big fans and followed his material faithfully, or at least as faithfully as can be expected of tv.
Martin had no idea where he was going. If AFFC didn't convince you, and ADWD still somehow didn't convince you, consider that he has basically given up finishing the books. He had no grand master plot. He even admitted he started writing the series because he had this image of a dead wolf with a stag's antler in it's throat. That's all he had when he started.
Killing Eddard Stark was genius. But the red wedding was just dumb. He kept trying to be the shocking author by killing all his best characters, and now he is left with a mangled mess of a story. Why did I suffer so much Iron Islands crap? None of those characters mattered. Danny's entire story is filled with locations and characters that are irrelevant. She could have just flown on top of her dragons to westeros three books ago and the story would be the same.
Bottom line, Game of Thrones was a fun ride with no destination. Enjoy it for what it is, and be happy the show at least has an ending of some sort. For those of us who wasted decades of our lives on his books, an ending is a lot better than the alternative.
Edit: if you want really gritty fantasy that doesn't disappoint, read Joe Abercrombie. His books actually have plots and endings, and he is a better writer than Martin.
I agree with this for the most part. I think at some point he got more interested in showing his world than telling any specific story in it, which is why we went from a one family story (every POV in book 1 was a Stark except for Tyrion and Danny) to basically at least one character in every corner of the world to show what was going on there.
I also have to say meh to Abercrombie. I read The Blade Itself and didn't care enough to read the rest of the trilogy. I felt he tried a little too hard to subvert tropes and his writing style was nothing special. But that's just my opinion. I prefer Sanderson (Stormlight Archives) for page-turning action that doesn't require much thought, or Rothfuss (Kingkiller Chronicles) for a beautifully written trope-subverter.

Yes, and BBC is releasing a series re-do of the His Dark Materials trilogy after the first was ruined in the abomination that was Golden Compass. It even has Lin Manuel Miranda!
Speaking of, Lin Manuel Miranda is also going to be composer and executive for TV prequel story to the Kingkiller Chronicles, and eventually for a movie trilogy for the books (though Pat Rothfuss is in the same boat as GRRM, as we've been waiting for the final book for seven years now, and there's no release date in sight).

I have finally arrived, guys!!! XD XD XD XD XD
Ok, ok, now seriously, I fully agree with you NightCrawl3r and I made two threads about this topic already on Hearthpwn some time ago. After watching the last trailer, an idea I haven't shared yet with anyone online about a possible and somewhat "logical" ending of the series came to my mind, and I hope to be right for the sake of it. Here it is:
Some gods in Game of Thrones have played a fundamental role in the series so far, but always behind the scenes and they have never fully manifested. I'm especially talking about the Many-Faced God and the Lord of Light, but there are other gods we know very well like the God of the Seven (also known as the New Gods) and the Old Gods of the Forest (also known only as the Old Gods). What if the entire series is a somewhat siniester plan of the gods? What if the Night's King and his army are in fact a final desire of the gods to judge the living and the dead alike? What if Arya Stark is running from the spirits or corpses of those she had killed using her special abilities granted by the Many-Faced God, at the begining of the last trailer? That some (or something) have been handled some of the invisible threads of the events of the series, making all the characters just mere pawns at the end of the day (yeah, including Petyr Baelish ;)), seems very fitting to me for a series like Game of Thrones, and who better than the gods for that? ;)
I know this theory of mine is nothing new and special in media (we have seen several times this kind of plots in videogames, television, books, movies, etc.), but at least it seems to be better (at least for me) than just a battle between zombies and dragons. :P
Senpai noticed me! That's an interesting theory but the series is a bit too down to earth for it to be true. The zombies coming down to cleanse humankind is a theory I've heard elsewhere though. Something along the lines of, "the humans locked in perpetual war and causing suffering because of it are the real monsters here; failing to band together is failing the judgment and the zombies are coming to bring peace as a result"
I really do enjoy hearing all the alternate fan theories. Many of them are well thought out, logical and interesting. I would have had no problems with them taking inspiration or straight up copying one of them for previous seasons. It wouldn't be the first time a stuck franchise did this
Comments from George Martin is the series will have a 'bitter-sweet' ending. That doesn't sound like the 'superhero' ending you are predicting. But I guess we'll see.
I meant that the journey to the end rather than the end itself is going to be similar to superhero films where there is a lot of action and special effects with not much plot or thinking. It's already obvious there's going to be a lot of zombie punching

I've read about two thirds of one of Abercrombie's books but I might pick it up again given that it's recommended in this context. I already have the Kingkiller Chronicles in my eReader but haven't gotten around to starting yet due to a massive backlog. I'm definitely going to give it a try after finishing my current book :)
Obviously a person's taste in writing is highly objective. If you like fantasy full of thrilling action, Kingkiller is not for you (I'd recommend Sanderson for that). If you enjoy a more thoughtful fantasy with beautiful prose a clever wordsmithing, I'd highly recommend Kingkiller.
I read somewhere that Sanderson purposely avoids complexity in his sentences because it distracts from the action. That's why he can crank out an 800 page book every 1-2 years. By contrast Rothfuss (and to a lesser extent GRRM) meticulous craft and re-re-rewrite every sentence, which is why it takes them 5 times as long to put out a book. Not that there's anything wrong with action—sometimes you're in the mood for an Avengers movies and sometimes for 2001 Space Odyssey.

I was thinking of my theory as something really siniester, an intervention of the gods that would make us all shit in our pants, like the end of a good terror movie. The gods wouldn't be fair, nice and all that, just total bastards that love to play sick games with the mortals and even the dead, judging both of them alike in an a twisted way (for some reason, the Hellraiser franchise came to my mind when thinking about this, LOL :P). Of course, they would never speak directly or fully manifesting themselves in the mortal realm, that would be just too stupid. But yeah, just ignore my theory, that would be just too out of place for a series like GoT and we have seen it just too many times in media... As you said, the series is a bit too down to earth for it to be true (especially the TV show), and the truth is I really never liked Game of Thrones' gods. I have already enough with all the zombies and dragons, hehe. XD
Does someone here have a """better""" idea for the ending of the series? :P
Up until the end of S7, I had this hope that Littlefinger would end up all alone on the Iron Throne after plunging Westeros into chaos. Unfortunately, said chaos would then enable the White Walkers to just march onto King's Landing. That would basically mean he'd get what he wanted, with a cool twist.
Currently, I suppose they could give Daenerys the Targaryen taint. Madness would be a cool way to "fix" how un-grey she has been compared to most other characters. I mean, we saw the world through her eyes all along, she thought she was the hero all along, but now we get other POV characters with her and reality is a lot different from that. We could even restore Varys's status as an intelligent person if he backstabbed her upon noticing she is not the best option for the realm.
OFC this probably won't happen because D/D have a huge hard-on for Daenerys, but still it could work.
Fun fact: With Cersei, Robert, Joffrey, Stannis, Renly, Tommen and Myrcella dead, Jaime actually becomes the heir to the Iron Throne (if he renounces his status as a member of the Kingsguard ofc). Without Jaime available, Tyrion becomes the heir as the Queen Regent's younger brother.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Start of Year: Provoke the failure of 3 expansions, force nerfs on otherwise balanced cards, bring deckbuilding to an all-time low and get rotated one year earlier for being such a threat to the game's health. - Genn and Baku's historical entry on the White Book of Shit Design, shortly before retiring unpunished

I still believe killing Petyr Baelish (and Tywin Lannister ;)) was a terrible mistake. Also, I would love to see Jaime on the Iron Throne :D and always wanted Daenerys to fall into madness, that would be cool and very fitting for the character after all, but probably it's never going happen for the reason you already mentioned. Damn. :(

We could get Charles Dance back as a White Walker (not really, since his corpse blew up with the Sept of Baelor :/). D/D really did a good job rewriting Tywin as a decent man underneath all that ruthlessness. One of my favourite changes the show made from the books!

After defeating all planeswarkers and stealing their sparks, our lord Nicol Bolas invades the plane of Westeros. Takes control of the undead army with his superior Mindcontrol Magic and turns the Edgelord Nightking into a simple footsoldier. Then annihilates the mere humans who dare to call themselves kings and queens and leads the rest of the mankind to a new era of prosperity and magic.

In the books, there's been mention of something going on between Tywin's wife and the Mad King over multiple POVs. The twins constantly compare themselves and their incest to the Targarens, including the fact that their children are either "mad" or "great", just like the dragon kings. If the books ever finish, Jaime is still a strong contender but there's not enough time for that in the show now
I too expected the white walkers to get as far as King's Landing due to the lack of unity on the human's side. Maybe Littlefinger doesn't do this single handily but he certainly helped. The white walkers don't bring chaos though, they bring the peace of death. Maybe after winter, people can resettle the continent with a new sense of humility. Or maybe this prompts the survivors to get their shit together and repel them before further damage
Never thought about Dany being mad. I strongly believe she'll die in the end because of the implications of some prophecies but sacrificing herself like a hero is very cliche. This sounds like a wonderful alternative. Looking back, I'm not totally convinced this won't happen in the show yet. She's been roasting people guilty only of being loyal to another side just like daddy
On a less macro level, I expect the story to end the way it started, with clever scheming, less punching. The zombie invasion is more of a product of the shenanigans giving them an opening rather than the main focus. Vary's/Dorne's scheme never made it to the show and remains unresolved. Sansa is still looking up to Littlefinger as his apprentice in the books. Likewise, Stannis is still alive and more of a main character than Jon, who may or may not be a wolf now. Tyrion didn't suffer a sudden brain misplacement. The potential is still there. A lot of people came up interesting specific lines starting off from where the books ended but a play by play of each one would take up the entire page

Of course :) I dislike too much action in my books, which is why I looked immediately to your latter recommendation in the first post. On the other hand, I don't put much importance into the beauty and complexity text either (some of my favorite novels are non-English with amateur translations that butchered the text). It's a nice but unnecessary bonus. I'm most concerned about well woven characters and plot. Not sure how that translates into a movie - one of Christopher Nolan's films perhaps
8 seasons is far too many, so no wonder it's disappointing. Shows become stale when more and more of the same stuff is released, The Simpsons is a good example of this.

Breaking Bad is an example to be follow, looks like 5 seasons is the perfect fit.
GoT is a mixed bag, some arcs, characters and cast is just too good (Tirion, Jofrey, Ned, etc...) and for them 15 seasons is not enough but comes together with so bad adapted or rushed arcs and characters (I can't stand Dorne for half of one episode) 8 seasons looks really a lot.
Well, Sherman, I'm waiting for your thorough opinion on the first episode :P

One week, guys, only one week left and a few hours for the final season...

Well, Sherman, I'm waiting for your thorough opinion on the first episode :P
Start of Year: Provoke the failure of 3 expansions, force nerfs on otherwise balanced cards, bring deckbuilding to an all-time low and get rotated one year earlier for being such a threat to the game's health.
- Genn and Baku's historical entry on the White Book of Shit Design, shortly before retiring unpunished
it was a good episode, and im one of those who are sad because Dave&dan strayed from the GRRM's books story.
