Wondering if anyone has had success playing HS on airplane wi-fi. I am flying trans-pacific with United to Asia and was hoping I could ease some of the pain of my 15-hr flight by playing some HS.
I know there has been some discussion on Reddit.. results seem to be mixed and the most recent threads are over a year ago.
It probably depends on the airline and the specific flight, but I had success on a domestic JetBlue flight earlier this year! There would be the occasional disconnect, but overall good enough to play without ruining any games.
Maybe it's not a problem for you, but I'd also check their wi-fi charges. A few companies provide the service for free, others are cheap enough but some are kind of dear.

Will I furiously be pushing the 'end turn' button for 1min because of no connectivity? If an average game of HS takes 8-10mins (let's say arena for simplicity sake), what would you say the markup would be on airplane wifi? Trying to determine whether or not it's worth the cost.
I haven't been on a United Airline flight since 2012 so I'm not 100% on that, yet I think it's possible. I know Delta has a similar scheme but from my experience, I couldn't find the high speed internet capability in it nor the selection to even choose it. Other than that, I haven't been on any airline since I haven't been to any other place in the world besides Central America and Caribbean.
I believe most flights in the Americas have WiFi but I also believe that European flights have it as well. I also think that United Emirates has wifi in their flights, but I don't know where that flight goes to.

Thanks!
I don't think any wifi on planes has gaming speed capabilities so maybe
On Delta it's good enough to stream video so I'd assume United is similar. I've been on many of those flights myself, but haven't flown United in years. I switched over to Asian airlines because US airlines are just bad at everything.

Being capable of "gaming speed" is only needed for games where response time is extremely important, like FPS for RTS games. Games like Hearthstone should run perfectly fine even over a slow network as long as the connection is stable.

That's a good question. On JetBlue, the WiFi is free for domestic flights, so it didn't hurt to try. I can see why you want to find out if it will work on United before paying for it.
From United's webiste:
"Pricing for Internet access will vary. On most aircraft equipped with United Wi-Fi, pricing for Internet access is determined and charged by flight segment (from takeoff to landing). On all 737 and 757 aircraft equipped with DIRECTV, pricing for Internet access is a fixed per-hour rate, with access and charges starting at the time of purchase and ending when you disconnect.
We are in the process of launching a newly designed portal with multiple payment options. With this new portal, on select aircraft, you will have additional Internet access options, such as time-based plans (e.g., 30 minutes, 1 hour) or full flight access, as well as the ability to purchase Internet with your MileagePlus award miles or a saved credit card in your MileagePlus account. Please be sure to have your MileagePlus number and password in order to log in to your account.
To determine your aircraft type, you can check the Flight Status & Information page for an upcoming flight or refer to the safety card on board."
You could also try contacting their customer service in advance, and if they assure you that it will work, and it actually doesn't, ask for a refund. :)

I actually have played HS on a United flight with their wifi, so it should be possible for you as well.
Interestingly enough, I've also played from 4G on an airplane with no wifi, and I'm quite sure I have no idea how that's possible lol.

Hearthstone's data consumption is about 10KB / minute, so even the weakest wifi connection should suffice.

I just rode JetBlue this morning and played hearthstone the whole time. You should be good
Many thanks for all the replies! Good to know! I will probably try the 30mins package to test it out and will go from there.
Cheers!
p.s. not flying American airline by choice, it's holiday season so prices are through the roof across the board!
