try to now make a big deal out of it since it was about a black guy
Your white privilege is showing. Do you read the newspaper or watch the news, if ever? A black child goes missing and no one gives a shit, but god forbid a white child goes missing and you are guaranteed to see it on television.
Twitch Emotes and child obduction is literally the same
You can't just call everyone an SJW and dismiss their claims. That'd be like if some political supporter just called all opposing factions cucks and ignore everyone besides Dona-
What I'd personally like to see in 2016 is for people to quit throwing around words like "ignorant" and "educate" as if it's the basis for every argument about how much smarter they are than everyone. Anyone else tired of that bullshit? Why are those words thrown around when it doesn't make sense 9 times out of 10? Let's use an example:
Random twitch user says ni**er or fa**ot or whatever other insult at the streamer in chat.
1) This person isn't Ignorant of what they are saying, they know exactly what the word means and the intentions behind it, so calling them "ignorant" makes absolutely no sense whatsoever in this context.
2) How exactly are you going to then "educate" said person about what they're saying when they were never "ignorant" about what they said to begin with? Why are these two words thrown around so much so horribly?
For whatever reason over the last few years, it has become standard practice that when you are making your point, you MUST use "ignorant" and "educate" and that somehow makes your opinion more relevant or show how much smarter you are. Jesus christ it's fucking obnoxious. /end mini rant
Anyway you're wasting your time man. You think you're standing up for whats right, and you come from the right place, but it's pointless. When are people going to finally accept that you can't stop people from feeling a certain way, or acting a certain way, or saying certain things no matter how much it bothers you or how much you dislike it. You can mute them, ban them, block them, tell them they're terrible people and guess what - they will still feel the same way and nothing you can do is going to change that. You HAVE to learn to ignore them and not let it bother you. It's the only reasonable defense moving forward. The biggest problem in 2016 really is everyone voicing their loud, often times terrible opinions about how another person should think, feel, or act instead of letting the world work itself out. Someone dropping the N bomb online probably isn't doing it in public towards a black person hatefully and if they are, they'll get what's coming to them anyway; or maybe they won't, that's the beauty of LIFE. Let life deal with these things on it's own IMO.

Many (predominantly White) people still don't know there is even a problem. Racism is very much still alive, and it's not going to go away by ignoring it. If you think people talking about these issues is "obnoxious", then it must be rubbing you the wrong way. And that wouldn't be the case if weren't mentally associating yourself along with the ignorant children.
I watched some of the Dreamhack event but I minimized the chat because it's just absolute twaddle most of the time, full of semi literate mouth breathing morons.
That said I actually wasn't aware of the racism and although it doesn't surprise me, I am really disappointed to learn that it happened during an HS event.
For me, HS and all similar games should be a place where people can be free to be themselves without fear of judgement or bullying. The entire idea of these games is to provide an inclusive and judgement free environment because, in my experience, most of the 'nerds' who like these sorts of games get enough crap from people in the 'real world'. I'm taking about role playing games etc - not general video games like CoD which (imo) cater to the lowest common denominator.
Something needs to be done to address this. If not by new rules or banning then we, as players of the game, need to let people know that it's just not right and this kind of shit has no place in HS. The world is fucked up and full of enough hate as is - we don't it need in HS
So TerrenceM, I hope you won't let this shit get to you. Please know that most of the HS community is on your side. You played really well at Dreamhack and I know a lot of people wish you nothing but success.
I know I bitch about the stupid posts and threads here and I laugh when people call me 'fuck tard' and stuff but this is different... This kind of hate has no place here and is totally unacceptable
I'd like to push this topic more towards solutions and increase awareness of the issue. A message to dreamhack with our support would be an effective strategy. We have power in numbers. Also anyone who feels very strongly against this post just private message me one on one. I'm open to having a conversation and playing some games on hearthstone. Just watch out for my nzoth dreadsteed
trump doesn't care, why should there be people to defend him. He might even like the joke, why you need to defend someone that doesn't even care at all. cmon. grow up.

Ah, here come the insults. That took all of two minutes from someone who clearly sucks his own dick over how smart he is as evidenced by insulting the previous poster's IQ for no reason other than you having no actual rebuttal.
Racism is never going away, because you can't force people to feel a certain way. I'm sorry that bothers you so much, but grow the fuck up and learn to live with it. If someone decides they don't like someone for the color of their skin there's actually nothing you can do about it. Don't know how else to explain it. A huge part of growing up (emotionally) is realizing you can't tell someone how to think or force them to feel a certain way.
By the way, it's much better to just be a nice, kind person than to be very intelligent. And no one who ever thought of themselves as intelligent actually was by the way.
Saying it isn't racism it is just Twitch chat is stupid. Twitch chat IS racist.
Making fun of someone is one thing, calling black people monkeys or even saying "if I was your brother I would beat you slut" to a girl streaming (actual quote btw) is not making fun anymore. It's just offensive and not funny at all.
Sure, I don't think sexy streams have a place on Twitch, maybe CamSoda; but slut shaming girls is just immature.
And don't go calling me a SJW, I like dark humor, love playing Cards Against Humanity, but posting racist slurs on the internet, even if you think it's only a joke, can have a very negative impact. A lot of people can actually think it's not a big deal because they see other people saying it and they get comfortable with it. You never know if someone who reads Twitch chat also sees that as only a joke, even if it is just an unfunny one.
Just respect people, there are a lot of actual funny ways to mess with someone that won't offend them.
EDIT: Racism can go away very easily, people are only racists because they were taught people with a different skin color are bad. Put a white kid and a black kid in a room and see if they will have anything negative to say about each other, they will just acknowledge that they don't look the same way.

They may not be oblivious to the meaning of their words ( which is at least an improvement I guess ) but it doesn't change the fact that they are either ignorant or indifferent to the effects of racism/sexism and homophobia. I'm not trying to say that you got it all wrong because you made a great point by stating that these people who throw racist insult and comments around are already educated and not ignorant but once again knowing the meaning of the N word and using it to insult someone ( btw I must say that I can't understand how having a darker skin colour is any worse than being white, infact I'm so white I can't sunbathe... anywaaaaay) is pretty much the same with training archery on target dummies to later become a ninja assasin type and just being able to proparly use a bow.
The point is, there is no excuse for being racist if you are not joking between close friends which is not at all the case here. You can't just go nutzo on someone in front of thousands for fun and if you think that it's a fun activity to regularly troll people on twitch chat you seriously need a life and a good rehab center.

It's like you didn't even read what I wrote. There's a certain truth in growing a thick skin to insults, but it escalates beyond that. People are physically assaulted every day because if their skin color. This isn't about forcing people to feel a certain way, it's about educating people to look beyond the outer appearance and to not judge someone solely because of it. Do you understand now?
I believe people underestimate their power in impacting the world around them. First and foremost we have the ability to assemble and our gathered voices can be heard by Twitch, Dreamhack, and TerrenceM.
Second, I believe empathy plays a major role in how we choose to communicate. Some trollers will read this polygon article and read quotes from TerrenceM and his family and they will empathize with him. next time they will realize they are effecting a real human beings emotions and family and some people will think twice.
Third, I have no illusion that this issue can be 100% resolved, but I and other will fight for it and refuse to give into complacency.

You're the one who isn't getting it. You just compared saying ni**er on a twitch chat box to being physically assaulted in real life. What the fuck? And again you aren't educating anyone. The only REAL problem here is people like you with your never-ending perpetual undertone of smugness and the way you talk down to people with differing views. (Which I admit I have now started doing to you, but only because you were being a dick.)
Actually it's kind of funny because I see people say that all the time. "It isn't going to go away by ignoring it." That actually couldn't be more false. It actually works extremely well, you should try it some time. Ignoring things actually makes LOTS of them go away, and in this case is actually the best possible solution (twitch chat obv)
The next time you're in Twitch chat, and you see offensive things, ignore it. Magical things will happen I promise.

That is not what I said. I stated that the problem can only escalate if you leave racism be. Please read. Just try, it's not hard.
There's a sad, reprehensible and vocal minority in gaming that is disrespectful and hateful...and based on their responses whenever anyone calls them on it, they think they are the majority.
I'm fairly certain the majority of that portion of the community are kids, and if they think this shit flies in the real world they better prepare for a rude awakening. Seriously, how hard is it to just be cool and respectful?

Put a white kid and a black kid in a room and see if they will have anything negative to say about each other, they will just acknowledge that they don't look the same way.
I'm not surprised.
Twitch chat is a literal toxic waste dump.
RIP yogg-saron good things don't last forever :(
I believe people underestimate their power in impacting the world around them.
