I'm torn. I like secret mage, but i'm not very impressed by Aluneth. The thing i like about this game is fun decks, and Big Spell Mage seems fun to me. I lack 2 Dragon's Fury, 2 Summoners, Meteor and the Dragoncaller. Hence the doubt. I know Secret Mage is big right now, but what about the spell mage? Can anyone help me out here?
So far, I have had problems with Big Spell mage getting wrecked by all the fast aggro decks out there. The deck is pretty vulnerable until around turn 5, and really doesn't get cooking until about Turn 7. With many of the popular decks .. you are lucky if you see Turn 7.
I like the deck, it just is struggling for me to survive the burst opening that a lot of the decks have right now.

I think over time Aluneth will be the better investment. Unless blizzard pushes big mage more, which knowing blizzard is very likely. To what success is really up to blizzard. I see Aluneth being a very powerful card in pretty much any aggro mage deck. It's bonkers and can fit into many decks right now and the future. If you like secret mage or aggro mage in general I would craft Aluneth.
It's also worth noting that secret mage/aggro mage is a tier 2/3 deck in wild and standard I believe, and both lists run Aluneth (even in wild which is impressive given the many options in wild.)
Secret mage is the only viable competitive deck for mages this season that has relative success. I myself was unlucky enough to open no mage epics or legendaries this haul, and have since crafted Aluneth and still don't have the epics. Aluneth adds to secret mage's reliability and helps it with the turns it used to run out of steam and enter topdecking mode. It allows you to play more aggressive knowing that your hand refill is on the way (save the games where Aluneth is at the bottom of your deck which happens every now and then). There is a chance that as things are ironed out more mage decks will rise (and I really do hope they do), but for now Aluneth and secret mage are your best bet. If you're more into fun/theorycrafting, the epics could be more worth your while. You could possibly find something that works before the majority.
I will add I did also craft Spiteful Summoner but mostly because the "Big Spell" decks are around in multiple classes and I had to scratch my theorycrafting itch. Some days I feel like I should have crafted other missing epics like Twilight Acolyte or Voidlords that I'm missing, but other days it's fun, especially in my current "all rng casino mage" deck.
For crafting priority I'd recommend: Aluneth, Spiteful Summoner, Dragon's Fury, Meteor (kinda out of favor right now as control/fatigue mage is mostly mia from the meta), Dragoncaller Alanna (unreliable right now with control warlock with twisting nether and voidlord army dominating the meta, fun but by the time you pull it off the game is mostly over).
Big spell mage is a lot of fun but you can play the deck without the spiteful summoners. The dragons fury are needed, but you could add more elemental synergy or tech cards in place of the summoners. Even corridor creepers.
Thanks for the response, i think i might just craft Aluneth. It seems an interesting card. And i guess i'll get the epics needed to fix a good big spell mage. :)

Weird, I actually fair pretty well vs aggro with my Big spell mage. You might need to do some teching.
I like big spell mage from a fun standpoint, but if you're looking to be effective craft Aluneth. Secret mage is doing pretty well right now because you can plow through control-lock and fairs pretty well vs the priest decks. Any time you play aluneth your winrate is going to go up.

I've tried Big Spell both with and without Aluneth. the card draw obviously is great with it. Where I seem to be running into problems is with Aggro Paladin, Pirate Warrior, ect. Tar Creeper and Doomsayer are the only defense you have until at least T5 when you can get to Dragon's Fury. With good draws, I can stabilize, and then those decks become a cake walk ... but with how explosive those decks can be, if you don't get at least 2 early defense cards in hand, sometimes T6 is the end of the game.
Not real sure what I can tech in, that doesn't wreck the late game.
I really think its just a better deck at different ranks. Once you get away from all the aggro explosion decks, it would be a really solid choice.

If you want fun, then Big mage - BUT with Deck of Wonders (!) - is a way to go :)
Tho if the only thing u r missing for a secret-tempo mage is Aluneth, its probably a better investment right now. You will at least have one good competitive deck to fall back on for time being ;-)

Aluneth is amazing, it destroys priest by itself if you play it on curve.

considering Big SPell Mage is a frustratingly ineffective mess right now and Secret Mage is tearing up the ladder...the choice should be easy
I tried having fun once. It was awful.

I've been trying a tempo variant of big spell mage recently, inspired by firebat, it uses both Aluneth and big spells.
An explanation is in the deck description.
