It has always been said that buying packs with gold wasn't worthy, as with only 50 more gold you could play Arena and get even with only 3 wins, making profit if you win more than that, which isn't very difficult. The question, now, is if spending gold in Arena will still be wiser than buying packs with that gold for engrosing your collection, as packs will be randomized. I'm not talking about the fun you can get playing Arena, I'm talking specifically in terms of grinding Arena for increasing your collection.
While for new players Arena will still be the wiser way to spend gold, those who have been playing Hearthstone for a while don't really need more Classic or GvG packs. So, for those who aren't willing to spend real money to buy a lot of packs, is Arena still worth it? Or would it be better to spend that gold in buying TGT packs, as you make sure this way you get the cards you really want (at least for some time)?
I hope Blizzard gave us an option to choose packs after an Arena run. I know they are trying to get their profit (making it more difficult to catch up for those who don't spend money by randomizing the packs), but as I have already said in other thread, they already get a profit with the big amount of players that don't grind Arena to get the cards (let alone the cosmetic stuff like the new heroes). So they could make it just a bit more accesible to those who don't want to spend much money in the game, imho.
but can't this logic sort of be applied to Tavern Brawl? Are you going to start wanting the option to pick which type of pack they want for free each week after their 1st win?
I wouldn't complain about the chance to choose from Tavern Brawl, but I think arena is different. You pay gold to play it, basically you buy a pack and pay 50 gold for the arena run. Now if that is random, you only have a 1/3 chance to get the pack you want.
If it is better to still play arena or buy packs depends on your arena average and the amount of TGT cards you already have at the time of decision. I will definitely start grinding arena again after the first big opening.
But Tabern Brawl has never been the best way to grind for cards as Arena has. Tabern Brawl is more a casual mode which has one Classic pack as a reward to stimulate players, but is just that one pack for the whole week, you're not grinding for cards there. Arena is a whole different thing, as you can play one after another if you're good enough, and get rewards after every run. So, it's a very different thing. I'm talking about increasing your collection without the need to spend real money. Tabern Brawl doesn't fit there at all.
once you have most of the common and rare cards from a new set, which isn't that long if you buy something like the preorder of 50 packs, then most any pack is dust and you can easily make any single card you don't have for a specific deck, even if some packs are more desirable than others for what MIGHT get opened rarely.
Not getting a specific pack is certainly frustrating for entirely f2p players with a current collection, but the more TGT you get at the bottom, the less it truly matters, and i think its perfectly fine that it isn't ideal to the people who haven't invested in the game even a little. A few bought packs really speeds up the common/rare process and there are MANY powerful cards there too.

Your logic seems to be flawed. If "those who have been playing Hearthstone for a while don't really need more Classic or GvG packs" then playing arena now is not worth it because you are guaranteed to get a GvG pack, so playing after the expansion hits is better than it is now. After all, it's far better to have a 33% chance of getting the pack you need than the 0% chance you have now.
For the record, I dispute the claim that people who have been playing HS a while don't need any more classic and GvG packs anyway, so would reject the conclusion on that principle.
What bugs me is that I've gotten enough GVG packs. I don't want them anymore. That was my strategy - farm GVG packs until I don't need them anymore. Then either use my gold on TGT or classic packs. Now I'll be getting GVG cards 1/3rd of the time.
It will only be bad for those arena players who don't have much gold saved up and have no desire to buy packs - which is why Blizzard is implementing it.
Personally I bought the 50 pack pre-order and have 19,000 gold saved from arena wins so it won't impact me very much at all. By the time I open 100-150 TGT packs I will have a similar amount of cards I still need from each set.
A long time ago I asked hearthpwn whether it was worth trying to complete the classic set, people said definitely no, they were very right.
Arena will still be far more profitable than buying packs. It only isn't if you're a pretty dire arena player.

That's true, and after a couple months, the point would come where I'd rather have classic packs instead. But for the first few months, TGT obviously is the pack you want, and therefore sticking to the principle of arena giving the newest set like it was with GvG would be better now.
It is just the time of changing the rewards. I had appreachiated randomized rewards a few months ago when there was no expanison in sight.
It happens now just to make it impossible to effectively grind arena for the new card set, so many good arena players will buy cards with real money who otherwise had been grinding arena instead. Like me. I hate to support their marketing, but yeah, it worked. I did the preorder, not proud of it.

Uh, I'm not discussing the situation now, I'm talking about how it will be in a few days when TGT is finally released
Generally, if u have most cards, a pack with duplicates only (worst and most likely case) gives you 40 dust. Say u play arena for 0 wins (worst case), u still get a pack (40 dust) + 20 dust (= half a pack) so thats break even. If you can average 3 wins or more in arena I think its a good trade of regardless of packs.
Then it all depends IMO, if u do not have a lot of time to play and u say for some reason wanna try for legend, maybe u feel u dont have the time grinding out arena and then maybe its ok to just buy packs for gold to improve your collection, but thats situational of course and yeah everything depends on your objectives of course
I know that Arena will still be profitable (I average 70% wins in Arena), but that is in terms of gold and dust, most of the times, and not new cards. And crafting cards with dust is very, very slow. So, if you just want the new cards, I don't know how better Arena will be over buying some packs with gold.
The best way to do it seems to be a mix between playing Arena to farm for gold (and, if you're lucky enough, a TGT pack) and spending the excess of that gold (excess = everything over 150 gold in your rewards) in TGT packs. Obviously, that would require getting 7+ wins consistently, which isn't easy. Dust is going to be the worst reward, along with GvG packs.
Your logic seems to be flawed. Yeah exactly. You're asking will it *still* be worth it once the expansion is released. And my answer is if you consider it worth it *now*, then yes it will still be worth it after the expansion because you have a better chance of getting cards from the new expansion (33%) than you do now (0%).

I'm f2p and completely agree. Blizzard needs to make their money and setting reward structures that tilt the scales a bit in their direction is fine. Anyone CAN still be f2p when it comes right down to it, and that's an incredible offering by Blizzard.

I concur. I still need some epic & legendary cards from both sets, so there's still a small chance to get packs that are more than just 40(ish) dust.
On top of all of this, it's pointless to separate the enjoyment of arena play from the economic value. Saying "I'm not talking about the fun you can get playing Arena, I'm talking specifically in terms of grinding Arena for increasing your collection" is only valid if there are people who literally take no enjoyment from arena and are only there to grind gold. An odd concept, indeed!
Ultimately, the answer is yes. It is still more effective and efficient to use the arena to build collections. It's the only place to get positive rewards on your in-game gold in the form of more gold, cards, packs, and/or dust (both directly and as a result of unneeded cards) in Hearthstone.
I need some GvG and Classic epics and legendaries too, probably all of us do. What I mean is that I don't want a GvG pack if I'm only missing 9 epics and 9 legendaries, which are also the unplayable ones. About the enjoyment of Arena thing, I'm not denying the fun you get, but I don't see why I can't separate the fun from the profit to establish a comparison between playing Arena and buying packs with gold. I'm certainly aware that you have more fun playing Arena than just opening packs, but the question and the point of the thread is which way is better and faster to engrose your collection.
Your logic seems to be flawed. You're right, the "still" shouldn't be there. English isn't my native language, I guess that's my bad then.
I'm happy they are going to randomize the packs. At least now I have a chance to get Classic packs instead of having to buy them with 100g all the time. It's come to the point that I have more GvG epics than Classic epics.
I'd say a 33% chance to get the pack you want is better than a 100% chance to get a pack you don't want.
Imo is Arena for most players even more rewarding than before. Most people dont even need, gvg cards anymore. So random is definetky better than a GvG pack, ofcause its worse than to chose but basicaly is no value lost by the randomization.
So playing arena has increased in value, especially when you manage to have enough tgt booster, you only need to farm 50 booster and youll be stuck around 70% of the set, which is most of the time the same as gvg and classic, most players dont have realy all cards from all sets.

Discussion over.

And arena is still worth it because you make more gold and dust compared to construction if you’re a good player.

Getting randomized packs is worse than being able to choose, but better than being forced to get GvG packs. You win some, you lose some.
