Please take a moment and tell me whether a stream like the one described below would be of interest to you. Note, I am aware that there is a stream advertising sub-forum, but I hope I have managed to ask enough general questions and make enough general observations to warrant a place in General Discussion.
I look at a bunch of low viewer count streams out there and I notice some similarities in advertising. Everyone is a "chill" stream, everyone has great music, everyone has "dankest memes NA", etc. But lately, I've had a desire for something a little more high-functioning and directly interactive.
In addition to being an attorney and a former state manager of two Presidential campaigns, I am a felon and a (currently not using) drug addict.
That might be a little TMI to some folks, but ever since getting out of my legal troubles, I've had an interest in running addiction recovery groups and in the subject of prison reform in the US. I have serious issues with the way AA and Narc Anon runs their meetings, and after discussing it with some professionals, it seems like there's nothing preventing a sort of loose knit internet support network from helping a lot of folks who, for one reason or another, don't like the idea of traveling out of their homes and meeting with strangers in person.
I figure enough people in the gaming community must either have the drug issues, or have the interest in the political issues, to make a stream a lively event. Obviously, I'd be playing Hearthstone and enjoying the game, but I'd be a lot more focused on the stream chat and aim to keep a lively discussion going. I already do a daily rundown of news related to justice reform and what not, so it would at least keep things from getting dull.
I am fully aware that there would be many a troll interested in breaking up such a thing, but such is life on the internet. I'd appreciate it if you would drop a reply if you actually think that's something you would tune in for.
It has continued to surprise me that as the streaming market matures and diversifies, no one has really emerged as the "support group streamer". As far as I know, there's no Twitch rule against that sort of organization, and it seems with good chat moderation, there's some real good to be done.
Anyway, please let me know your thoughts. If it's a bad concept, I'd rather know before I drop the money for the streaming equipment.
Also, as food for thought, this seems kind of timely in America, since the 2020 elections are already revving up.
EDIT: For the record, I don't mean to suggest that only people struggling with drug abuse should come to the stream. Quite the opposite, in fact. I figure it's an interesting discussion for anyone, and most folks will either run into this problem in themselves or in a loved one at some point in their lives.
2nd EDIT: I seem to have oversold the focus on politics. I didn't mean to suggest it was a good idea to talk general politics, I meant that I don't think any discussion of the drug experience would be complete without getting into the legal system, prison time, etc. That's the extent of the politics I'd be interested in, and there's a lot to talk about in that arena in the USA.

Enjoying Americans winning in the Olympics is forbidden because it is political. A 14 plus page discussion of state-sponsored lawsuits against a multi-national corporation based on harassment, discrimination, and wrongful death allegations is apparently not political enough to raise an issue.

C'mon dude... Politics and drugs??? Are you kidding, right??? Both topics are extremely delicated and sensitive. Sorry, but I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't give a single f...k about some random stranger talking about them, even if you try to interact a lot with the audience. Asking something like this only shows you know little about people, psychology and entertainment in general, which is a really bad thing for a 33 year old person, but don't worry Shadowrisen, you still have time to learn... :P :P :P
Well, I mean one way or the other, the support group thing is happening over Twitch. I know the audience is there for that.
I don't want to just aimlessly discuss politics, but in America, the justice reform stuff has a lot of support on both sides of the aisle. It's just that a lot of folks don't have personal experience with the prison system, and don't really know how the whole thing works.
You could be right though, it might be a troll fest. But, I used to run political threads on Team Liquid back in the day, and people mostly stayed civil. It's always seemed like it can be done if there's a clear purpose in mind.

reocery stream with politics throwen in?
EDIT: For the record, I don't mean to suggest that only people struggling with drug abuse should come to the stream. Quite the opposite, in fact. I figure it's an interesting discussion for anyone, and most folks will either run into this problem in themselves or in a loved one at some point in their lives.
Terrible idea. Addiction isolates addicts from society already, and now you want to include video games, which are highly assictive, and isolating, into some sort of psudo recovery stream with politics? lol
keep recovery seperate from politics. they are too explosive topics.
you need to get out and meet a support group. Using video games and isolation is a terrible idea.
However, making a stream to interact with others is fine, but as an addict, the last thing u need is to be alone, playing addictive games all day and thinkingyou gettingbetter.
I speak from personal xp. Im in reocery for many years now, and i know how easy it is to lie to myself(denial) and how easy it is to use other things as substitutes for drugs(women, sex, video games, food, sugar, coffee, smoking) I have my vice down to just sugar and women now! lol
Addiction loves isolation. Gd et out of your house and meet people. Otherwise you will end up using again, or end using other things and you still be unhappy. FACTS get out of your own head and build a support group! It will save your life! Video games wont. People will.
I would check it out. I wish you luck if you go ahead with it.
My warning, though, for what it's worth, is that politics + anonymity + the current degree of political polarization means that if your idea garners any degree of success, you'll likely find the chat throwing names and being completely disillusioned each other/you. Outside echo chamber mediums, the toxicity of any exchange of ideas is staggering. but if you could make it work, that'd be awesome.
If you focused on drugs, you might be on to something. There was a "This American Life" podcast about these two recovered drug addicts that made a podcast about their drug stories and really formed a community. I could see something similar being done on Twitch. If you want to hear the story of this podcast, I really recommend you listen to this (you can skip the earlier parts about other things): https://www.thisamericanlife.org/667/wartime-radio
Like I said, I'd check it out, so if you go ahead, send me an update.
That's cool that you mention This American Life. I've listened to some of it already.
As for the isolation bit, it's a double-edged sword. CLEARLY, you are correct in that the ideal situation would be for people to meet face to face, but I'm not going for the ideal. If someone is able and willing to do that, they'll do it. The problem is, people get too ashamed and too removed to go to the meetings. I'm hoping there is some harm reduction to be done.
I'm editing the original post to speak to the politics thing again. Apparently, I didn't do a good enough job saying that I have no desire to just "talk politics". You can't have a discussion about drugs without getting into things like criminal penalties and jail time, etc. That would be the scope of the politics on this channel.
And just to be clear, I would be heavily advocating for the audience to go join meetings, at least to try it out. There are some serious flaws with the AA/NA model that prevent it from working for a lot of folks, and that's something we could talk about as well.
Thanks for feedback.

Those who are given more in life, must not cling to it, but risk it all at every moment!
Not a joke?
Confusing reply, that one.

sounds interesting, I'm not an addict but I do like more interactive streams.
This would be dope (puns aside)!
That's terrible, dude

I can shoot up my junk while hating on _______ political party while watching an old man play hearthstone. Sounds good to me.
Stream discussion and planning like this still belongs in the stream forum and not in General Discussion (which is purely for game related things).
Moved.
If you see a bad post on the forum use the report function under it, so I or someone else of the moderation team can take care of it!
