How often do you play? - 2-3 hours a day on average
Which time of day do you usually play? - Morning & Weekends
Which class/deck did you use to get to legend? - Zoo, Control Warrior and Handlock
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? - MTG when it first came out...once again I'm old!
Do you have any tips or know-hows on grinding to legend? - Track your games. Do not over react to losing streaks. Make minor adjustments to your deck as needed. Pick a deck that you know has made it to legend and stick with it. Have fun!
How many times have you reached legend? - 1, and I'm rank 1 this season. (The only two seasons that I have been serious about trying to make legend)
How often do you play? - I average about 10-12 hours a week.
Which time of day do you usually play? - Evening in North America
Which class/deck did you use to get to legend? - Control Warrior last season, working on Shaman this season.
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? - Yugioh for 12 years, Magic off and on.
Do you have any tips or know-hows on grinding to legend? - Keep track of your wins and losses (and what classes/deck types those were to), and play the same deck for 30 or so games. After that 30 games, make adjustments to your deck to make you stronger against the decks you are losing to that you can improve against (don't worry too much about decks you lose to that you don't play against often, or decks that you have a natural weakness against unless you play against them a lot).
-Take the time to "master" a single class. It is good to play lots of different classes, but if you never settle down and take the time to "master" a single class then you may find it difficult to make legend. After mastering one class then you can branch out and work on other classes.
-Always consider what your opponent can play for their mana next turn when making your plays, and also take into consideration on what your options are next turn.
-Don't play cards just because you can, and don't feel like you HAVE to use all of your mana every turn. Sometimes the best play is to conserve your cards. (example: There are a lot of times when I am playing warrior where the only mana I use for a turn is to use my hero power. I don't want to over commit to the board into board wipes, and if I already have a strong board I will prioritize gaining armor instead of playing a big threat, that allows me to make strong tempo plays with shield slam to minimize their big threats while also playing a big threat on the same turn in the late game. Big tempo swing turns like that are really hard for other classes to handle)
How many times have you reached legend? - 15 (11 times on EU, 2 times on NA, one time on Asia and one time on my friends acc (he wanted legendary card back))
How often do you play? - Most days. But not that much, i don't have a single golden hero yet.
Which time of day do you usually play? - around 8 pm
Which class/deck did you use to get to legend? - I usually use my own decks and try to counter the metagame. I have no favorite class. On NA and Asia (i have almost no cards there) I used Miracle and Hunter.
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? - M:tG for a lot of hours.
Do you have any tips or know-hows on grinding to legend? - Take your time when you make decisions during your turn.
How many times have you reached legend? - twice, I skipped a season for farming, now my goal is to get there every season
How often do you play? - 5 hours a day
Which time of day do you usually play? - in the afternoon and at night
Which class/deck did you use to get to legend? - I used a lot of classes, mostly miracle rogue, druid, hunter and warrior (first I got there with druid in the miracle rogue era)
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? - I never played any CCGs just other Blizzard games
Do you have any tips or know-how on grinding to legend?
All the good advice was already written by others, I mostly agree with ReapyIrrwish. Most important thing: play to learn instead of just for the win and all the success will come from this mentality.
How many times have you reached legend? - 1, I honestly got bored to tears playing the deck I used to win, but I am a collector and so wanted the card back.
How often do you play? - less than I used to, mostly just for dailies nowadays, have been playing since closed beta though
Which time of day do you usually play? - evening/night
Which class/deck did you use to get to legend? - Aggro Hunter (pre naxx)
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? - Yu Gi Oh was my first for about 3 years, played MTG for another 4 or so years.
Do you have any tips or know-how on grinding to legend?
- Play Aggro decks/low mana curve decks, it just means each loss is a lot less frustrating, and saves a lot of time overall. You will get win and loss streaks so don't get frustrated if you go from say Rank 3 to Rank 5 and have to climb back up.
Try to set a goal for the day, maybe go up 1 rank each day if you have the time, or at least get a few stars from when you started playing.
Tip would be to play all the meta decks, or at least have good understanding of each classes weakness' and strengths, if you can predict what a classes response could be for each of your plays you should be in a good spot.
Sometimes tempo plays are better than holding onto certain cards, you can't always save your hard removal for the more ideal target, and you just have to use inefficient removal options at times, it feels bad but knowing when to go all in is important.
How often do you play? during the time i did the push a looot 4-5h now 1h-2
Which time of day do you usually play? -late night (23h+)or early morning (7-8)
Which class/deck did you use to get to legend? control warior to rank 5 then ramp druid to legend (s6)
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? - MTGO for 3 years playing 6-7 mocs
Do you have any tips or know-hows on grinding to legend? you need time a lot of it, also a cut edge deck with at least 65% winrate, as you see... i know a legend player (peaked at rank 20) that arrived to get legend with druid murlocs!. So not only top decked decks arrive to legend.
also constructed can get boring so i did an arena run for each 10 wins to change xd
How many times have you reached legend? - 1 (made it into the top 100 that season). Haven't tried to make legend since (been doing arena mostly)
How often do you play? - 2 hours a day on average
Which time of day do you usually play? - Night
Which class/deck did you use to get to legend? - Trap Hunter to get there, then switched to midrange warrior/midrange zoo lock to mess around after but turned out the decks were good and got me into the top 100 with a ridiculous win rate.
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? - Tried Pokemon, Yugioh (not the physical cards, but gameboy/computer versions of them)
Do you have any tips or know-hows on grinding to legend? The season before I hit legend, I was at rank 1 - 5 stars, on the last match I needed. Matched against the same person I just beat (all things considered my deck had the advantage, so I was feeling pretty good). I was using a token druid deck with double combo. A buddy texted me during the first few turns and I ended up misplaying an innervate. Long story short, I was on the verge of winning on turn 9 with combo (plus I had a board of AoL, harvest golem and some other 2hp drop on the board - he was at 14hp). On his turn 8, he hits my golem with whatever he had on the board and miracles out a thanlos swipe to clear the whole thing. Using the last two mana he hero powers to 15hp. Had I not wasted the innervate earlier I could have used it with combo on my turn 9 for the exact fatal. He ended up comboing me the next turn. Tilted after that and never made legend that season. In fact felt like giving up completely.
Season after that I played for fun and not caring about making legend, with some good decks and crazy win rates, I got to the top 100. (Those same decks got me into the top 32 in Blizzard's Last Call Tournament)
TL;DR - Stay focused when playing, don't tilt, play for fun, helps when you have good decks that give you high win rates.
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? - Magic for like 18 years, still playing it, although not competitively anymore. I also played Pokemon for like 2 years.
Wow! I have also been playing Magic since Fallen Empires but am now 42 years old!
How often do you play? -1 to 2 hours a day, A little more for the final push
Which time of day do you usually play? - Morning & night
Which class/deck did you use to get to legend? - Hunter/Lock till rank 5, Control warrior/Freeze mage after
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? - Mtg 20yrs
Do you have any tips or know-hows on grinding to legend? - Don't let the game get you down, always take a break aka stand up and walk around after a couple games or every 30mins, Love the game and have fun with it! Also watching some streamers helps improve your perspective with the game also :)
How often do you play? - 4-5 hours everyday on average
Which time of day do you usually play? - Afternoon/night
Without wishing to sound patronising, you are clearly pretty intelligent if you made legend. Surely you have a good future ahead of you if, aged 16, you stop spending 4-5 hours per day playing computer games and just study?
Cool thread Midas! I picked this game during the open beta and like you, got life haxed by it. Played MTG for a few years for fun so not new to card games but new to CCG's. I don't have the free time like a lot of other people have due to having a wife, kid, full time job, etc., but I did manage to grind enough on the weekends to make it happen. I was driven to reach legend at least once and now I ladder semi-competitively to try and break the meta. Good luck on your journey to legend and hopefully with the help of the community you can get there.
What's your age? - 27
How many times have you reached legend? - 1, Season 5
How often do you play? - 1 hour a day during the week, more on the weekends
Which time of day do you usually play? - Night
Which class/deck did you use to get to legend? - Midrange Hunter (pre-nerf), had my deck listed on this site before the nerfs but its dead now. Went on a 6 win streak at rank 1 to reach legend. Felt so good.
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? - No CCGs, only MTG
Do you have any tips or know-hows on grinding to legend? - Mainly, stick with it. Use the community for insights into the meta and then tweak your decks up slightly to fit what you see. I also advocate sticking with one good deck for the grind but it sounds like you dont have that issue. Lastly, if you don't have the cards for a deck, you have to get them. Subbing obviously hurts your value. GL HF!
How many times have you reached legend? 4x Legend so far!
How often do you play? Hard to quantify, I don't really keep track. Sometimes, not at all for a couple days, but I usually try to play at least a little very day and have spent probably 6-8 hours on some days when I was super-tryharding or there was nothing else to do.
Which time of day do you usually play?
Whenever time allows, though I function better in the evenings.
Which class/deck did you use to get to legend? Used zoo the first time to get from rank 1 to Legend, after using control warrior for most of the grind. I've used other decks since. Druid has also been a very good ladder climbing class for me, it's very versatile in the ways you can build it to combat just about anything you're seeing.
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? I played Yu-Gi-Oh and Duel Masters as a kid, and played the Kaijudo TCG for two years, during which time I won one of the world championships.
Do you have any tips or know-hows on grinding to legend? Everyone seems to emphasize the time commitment a lot, and while it does take a lot of time, it's not ALL about that. If you played for ten hours a day but maintained a 50% winrate, you'd never hit Legend. Don't underestimate the power of tilt, and take some time off if you're getting upset. I've lost multiple ranks before after being pretty high just because I didn't know how to stop and was always trying to end on a high note, and that's what really makes ladder grinding somewhat of a dangerous game. Play smart first, and only put in the time when you're in a good head space to commit yourself to each play in each game! Good luck :)
Personal Bio: - I go by VeiledSyn and I have been playing HS since just before Naxx release. Managed to crawl my way to my first Legend rank during my 3rd month of play with an awful Priest deck. But since then have had a great time enjoying all the aspects of the game from Arena to Ranked and even some small tournaments. Even more than playing the game I enjoy the customization that CCG's bring to the table. I love being able to tailor decks to a specific cause and figuring out ways create synergistic interactions. I know there are some new ones out there we just haven't been able to find yet (still looking for that great Shadowpriest that never seems to come).
What's your age? - 25
How many times have you reached legend? - 5
How often do you play? - 2-3 Hours/Day, usually less the first half of the month, more the latter half.
Which time of day do you usually play? - Very late... or is it very early? I think 1-4 am is standard for me (gotta love insomnia).
Which class/deck did you use to get to legend? - Control Priest (My main, have 3 different variants), Druid (Ramp), Pally (Control), with some Control Hunter (to keep ladder peeps on their toes) Last season I hit Legend using a Mech/Gazlowe Control Priest, tons of fun. (I abhor playing aggro decks, but love stomping them ^.^)
Have you played any other CCGs before? If so, which one for how long? - MtG (Played for a couple years, but didn't have enough cash to keep up and be competitive.)
Do you have any tips or know-hows on grinding to legend? - I've said this is many other threads, but for me the biggest thing that helped my ranks was using a stat tracking app. It helps so much to know your w/l average and along with that solid statistics on your best and worst matchups, that way you can make informed decisions on what to change to improve your deck/s. Also, only use 1-2 decks when laddering, you get into a positive rhythm easier and if you lose 3 times in a row, take an hour long break and come back later.
All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible. - T. E. Lawrence

- T. E. Lawrence
