So I am officially hooked on Hearthstone. I started playing it in Beta, then stopped playing for a little bit until just recently. I was capable of spending some cash on card packs, but still have quite a few gaps in my collection.
At this moment in time, I am really enjoying Paladin. I've been playing one of the Low Budget Paladin Aggro decks I found on icy veins. I seem to be stuck at Ranked 15 though. After purchasing those packs and disenchanting my doubles, extra golds and a Harrison Jones that someone told me I'd likely never use, I am sitting at 3115 dust.
So I have a few questions.
- Should I stick with just one class for now? I really enjoy Paladin, Mage and have messed with Shaman a little.
- If I do stick with Paladin, is it recommended to just farm Ranked until 500 wins for the Hero (Which I'm assuming means Tirion?)
- I've been told umpteen times to craft Ragnaros first, since playing as Paladin I would eventually get Tirion anyway. Is that how this works? Is Rag really my best option since I'm limited on funds?
- I have saved up 455 gold right now, but I lack a great deal of confidence when going into Arena alone. Why? Because I have such limited experience with the game (or ANY ranked CCG/TCG play in general). I don't really want to waste the gold. How do you get better at understanding card draft?
- Can anyone link me to sites that stay Up-To-Date with card rankings, arena rankings, ranked information? I see alot of googled info from months ago, but something tells me that as the months go by the ranks change dramatically.
- Does anyone have any hints/tips/advice for a new player looking to get into the higher levels of Ranked? (Eventually, not necessarily right this moment)
Thank you in advance for any and all assistance you guys can provide me
Read this, then play whatever you like to learn. It takes time.
Play whatever class you like, they all do different things. Don't limit yourself, but sticking with a class for purposes of learning it in-and-out can help.
The "hero" you get at 500 ranked is just a golden cosmetic for your class hero.
Only craft legendaries. Buy packs with gold to start if you don't do well in Arena. Never disenchant anything that isn't a dupe.
Thanks for the response Kilath. I have no idea why that MTG article from years back has anything to do with my questions. Maybe its just the noob in me.
Thats the reason I was wondering, I dont want to spread myself too thin by playing any and everything at the start.
Ahhh, ok. That's good to know. So I will have to craft Tirion anyways if I wanted him.
I have seen a few lists of Legendaries to craft, but they seem to be a few months old. Any lists that are updated as to what legendaries to craft first?
This article explains something that most new players (and even experienced ones) get wrong. Going into a game you have to know what your deck can and can't do and who the aggressor should be in the matchup. If you're completely new there are a lot of basics you need to get right first, but it's definitely an important skill to have if you want to reach high ranks.
The top legendaries imo are Cairne and Leeroy, with Ragnaros following closely behind (Ragnaros decides a lot of games, especially between bad players). That doesn't mean you'd want to have them in every deck, but most good decks will play at least one of those three.
As for arena Trump has tier lists for neutral cards and some classes (scroll to the end to see the rest): http://www.liquidhearth.com/forum/arena-strategy/1860-trumps-arena-rankings-priest Until you know what you're doing, following them to the letter isn't a bad idea and will certainly net you a few wins. The most important thing to remember is to always clear the opponents side of the field with your minions if you can unless you have lethal (in 20% of cases going to the face is a better idea, but until you learn to recognize those always clear the board)
I'm so glad there is prejudice against playing hunter/zoo/[insert FotM deck here]. People like that make the life so much easier for those of us who play to win.
There is a lot of good advice here so read the forums and see what people are talking about. Remember of course that a lot of things are opinions, don't be afraid to try things your own way, that is half the fun.
I disagree with Kilath a little bit about crafting. Now that I have a decent collection I save my dust for the big guys, but early on it can be useful to craft lower level minions to fill holes in your deck. Watch what other people are playing against you and if you see a card that plays the way you like then you might want to craft one to add to your deck. Just be a little careful because dust is pretty rare stuff when you start out!
Anyone interested in linking up to mentor a newbie? I listen and learn well! :) I'm house trained and do tricks too! I swear... no those are not fingers crossed behind my back, what are you talking about?
But no, seriously, if anyones interested in helping a newb learn the ropes and making a new friend let me know. Maybe thats a weird request but I learn so much better with hands on and skype has screen share so... yea. :)
If not, that's ok as I'm still playing, still learning and still checking out different sites for different info. It's just the skill curve and culture shock going from MMO's to TCG/CCG is quite steep and intense. Ton's of great info out there.
I agree with Touched Sage - eventually you're going to want to save your dust for Legendaries, but each class has a key Rare or Epic that will make a world of difference. If you know that there's a particular class you want to play with, it's worth getting its key cards early.
Personally, I enjoyed playing the full spread of classes, but if you want to have the best chance at dailies with the smallest number of committed decks I would build the following four decks:
A Druid Ramp Deck
A Cheap-Spells Mage Deck
A Warlock Rush Deck
EITHER a Warrior OR a Paladin deck I would suggest that this last deck be a mid-range deck so you can get some experience with each tempo of play.
This set of decks will prepare you for 23 of the 25 daily quests.

http://www.icy-veins.com/hearthstone-arena-card-rankings-spreadsheets is good for Arena ranking. Not the same as constructed, note. ihearthu.com stays up to date with strategy and content. Also here.
To get higher ranked, play a lot. Read a lot. Watch the top players play. I suggest Reynad (as he explains plays a lot when he streams).
WARNING: Opinions change with the meta!
Watch me play! Laugh at my mistakes!
You don't get Tirion for 500 wins, you get Uther's glowing face. Ragnaros is also a good option, as well as Cairne Bloodhoof.
