So I'm having this 'problem' where I'm too nervous to play Ranked. Because of that, I always tend to play casual mode, but at the same time I want to rank up to a higher rank. I don't know what's wrong with me, but I'm just sweating when I play a difficult game in ranked.
Just tap the "Ranked" button when you go to play a game and then play like you normally would. If you don't do well then learn from your mistakes and you will eventually do better, if you do end up doing well then continue doing well and get legendary. You shouldn't be "nervous" to play a game.
Happens to me in Arena, so it's basically the same thing, especially since I don't like to ladder (and this is a big reason why). As soon as it starts to really matter to me whether I win or lose a game, Hearthstone becomes bad for my life.
I have the same problem man. Occasionally I manage to give it a go but sooner or later the stress gets to me and I stop.
I've tried doing various things to calm my nerves and try to relax but with limited success. Sorry for having no helpful suggestions, but at least you know you aren't the only one.
You have to acknowledge that losing is okay. Even #1 legends lose. Sometimes due to ridiculous rng against a complete noob. Nobody gets even close to 100% winrate. Not even 70%.
The main attitude shift for me was this: I'm not playing ranked to rank up, I'm playing ranked to learn how to play ranked. The goal of any match is not to win, it's to learn how to get better at the match; it's to find out how I lost if I did; it's to figure out how I could have played even better on a win.
At the end of the day, getting slightly better at the game and improving your win rate by 1 or 2% is worth way more than any one win or loss. The goal is to improve that learning curve. At the end of any game you lost, ask yourself: is there something I can take away from this. If there is, it wasn't really a loss.
Yep. It's called "Ladder Anxiety" and it's pretty prevalent.
I don't like to lose, and I definitely don't like to lose progress. I typically top out around rank 8 every season because getting to 10 is easy and I don't play many games afterwards.
A lot of people say to take frequent breaks, learning to lose is an art, and eventually you will come to find that playing at any rank is the same as any other.
Eventually you just have to suck it up and press on. Try forcing yourself to insta-queue a few matches in a row whether you win or lose (assuming you're not on tilt or something) and get used to the feelings that emerge, and hopefully you will get used to it enough to not let it affect you in ladder. It probably won't ever go away, but it will get easier.

Any one else with this problem? What can I do?
Thank you in advance.
I actually had this exact same problem. Anxiety, fear of being trounced right?
Well, first you need to realize something. You will be trounced in ranked. Other times you will be the one doing the trouncing. You will be trounced in casual, other times you will be the one doing the trouncing.
Unless you add someone, you'll never encounter them again. They don't judge you (Unless you play Secret Pally ;-D) and if you get rolled over, at most they'll think, 'Ouch, unlucky draw? I know that feel.'.
So that's the first thing you have to realize: It's just like casual only with a number attached. No, scratch that. Casual also has a number attached, but in Ranked you can actually see it.
Second thing: This number is video game points. It matters nothing. Is it frustrating to lose ranks? Of course it is. But there's no harm that ever happens. You will not lose your house from slipping from 15 to 20.
The best thing you can do is just do it! Throw yourself in. If you get a facehunter on your first game and die to turn 4 lethal, oh well. If you get a control warrior and engage them in an epic match into fatigue where you win by the skin of your teeth, so be it. If you get a tempo mage that draws their high mana stuff first, and low mana stuff last, then big deal!
Hey, i have the same problem. Im afraid of playing bad in ranked. I know that im good enough to reach legend when id take the time, but i pressure myself too much when laddering. And im afraid if tilting. I srsly dont know how to get the right mindset for laddering...
Well i switch to casual after i reached rank 9 in one sitting. I usually have a huge winstreak until i reach a point where i say, i dont want to lose now..so better play casual. Fml
I am only in my 2nd season of playing ranked and so far I have found that it is not much different from 'Casual.' Everyone is just trying out netdecks in casual anyway so just jump in. At least you will be grinding out wins for Gold Heroes.
I don't think your scared to play ranked. I think you are scared that you won't rank up high enough and will end up thinking you are not a good player. Just remember to get to legend you have to play hundreds and hundreds of games and have luck on your side!! Just start playing ranked cause you get free cards and golden portraits and try to do better each month :). Your not going to get legend first month so take small steps.
wow, so many great positive posts in here! I thought for sure when I first read this thread the poor OP was gonna get ripped apart by all the try hards.
You guys have restored my faith in humanity. Or at least my faith in the HS community. :-)
Now that i think about it, i felt that kind of anxiety after reaching a rank i had never reached before. I was afraid i'd just lose right away and fall back in 2 games, so i'd often play arena or casual for a while.
Things change when you realize you're good enough (or even too good) for that rank so that you can move forward. When you hit legend that kind of fear will pretty much be gone, as you will always know you're good enough for the top!
You're right. Once I hit legend I feel free, motivated and happy. That's not the case when I'm playing in a non-legend rank.
I can understand this. Not with HS, I have no issues at all jumping right in. I feel competent enough, and usually win more than lose each session. But I have felt this with other online games. Games where I don't feel very confident about to begin with, and where stats are public, to make you feel even crappier. With HS, it's more about where you finish, than your overall WR %. SO don't even sweat it. I've only gotten to Rank 12 some seasons, because I played gunk, and wasn't feeling it, where other months I hit Rank 1 easily
There's no reason not to play ranked now unless you're testing a deck. Casual wins don't count toward anything other than quests and you're missing out on wins for your golden portraits and leveling up your reward chest.
First of all, it's just a game; And a random one at that
Second, don't play slow decks if you are the type to get nervous on ladder. Play fast decks. By the time you start feeling nervous, the game's already over.

Happens to me after a few wins in arena so I just stop playing this mode and go play casual or just stop the game.
Wow, thanks guys! :)
You definitely made my day better.
Btw: I forgot to tell that I've reached legend rank couple of months ago and I'm playing this game for over a year :')

Hearthstone is probably the most rank friendly game there is. If you suffer in this game, I wonder how you would go for others.
My legendary count excluding adventure legendaries, dupes and old murk eye: 40
$$$ spent on this game: 0
